The Film Department Closing in on $200 Million in Private Financing
LOS ANGELES - (Business Wire) The Film Department announced today that it is in negotiation with investors who prefer to keep the company in private hands for $200 million in equity and debt that will be used to finance the production, Posted : Wed, 04 Aug 2010 17:43:39 GMT
OS ANGELES - (Business Wire) The Film Department announced today that it is in negotiation with investors who prefer to keep the company in private hands for $200 million in equity and debt that will be used to finance the production, acquisition and U.S. release of 5-10 films per year. As a result, the company has withdrawn its registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The company has made six other significant steps forward:
*setting a U.S. release date of December 25 (on 2,000+ screens) for its romantic comedy “The Rebound,” starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha (with The Weinstein Co.).
*completing production and targeting a first-quarter 2011 release date for “Earthbound” (tentative title), a love story starring Kate Hudson, Gael Garcia Bernal, Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Bates.
*signing a U.S. home entertainment agreement with Twentieth-Century Fox.
*reaching an agreement for its films to be exhibited in the U.S. pay television window by Showtime (via The Weinstein Co.)
*improving its financial position over the last 12 months by more than $75 million, by paying off more than $60 million in debt and raising $15 million in additional private equity. In that same period the company has also generated more than $85 million in revenues and anticipated proceeds from its films.
*generating more than $120 million at the box office worldwide with “Law Abiding Citizen,” a $40 million production starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx.
“We’re thrilled to be coming out of a very difficult period for the entire independent film business with a great deal of momentum,” said Mark Gill, Chairman and CEO of The Film Department. “We’re now on track to expand and to take advantage of the enormous market opportunity in U.S. distribution, which is far greater than anything I’ve seen in 25 years in this business.”
“We’re grateful to all of the investors and finance industry veterans who have continued to support us in this transition, among them Mike Goguen, Michael Singer, Guy Inzalaco, Waleed Al Ibrahim, Zeid Masri, Roy Salter, Mike Witherill, Jon Merriman, Peter Coleman and their team at Merriman Curhan Ford, Bryan LaCour and his Union Bank entertainment group, and Joe Crabb and his team at Squire Sanders,” said Neil Sacker, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer. “And we’re excited to be in business with everyone at Twentieth-Century Fox Home Entertainment, which is widely and rightly regarded as an industry leader.”
The Film Department is an independent motion picture finance, production, marketing and distribution company that produces star-driven, commercial movies with net budgets between $10 and $45 million.

One of my top movies with Mr. Butler. After I saw this one earlier this year I was hooked. The End. Haha. Why Gerard wasn't nominated for a Golden Globe or something for this movie is beyond me because he was great. This is a bad ass movie. The courtroom scene is a favorite and Gerry was just menacing in that jail cell ipod scene when he stabs his cell mate. Gerry is good at psycho . Just another example of this man playing a variety of characters and being great at it. When will Hollywood recognize him as a serious actor? He's not a newcomer.

Here is a French article translated, posted by Elenoire.
That justice is made: Jamie Foxx and Gerald Butler under high voltage There are films where the magic operates as of the beginning, not need for first half an hour to tame l' environment and characters. That justice is made, carried out by F. Gary Gray, fact part of the club. For our greater pleasure. Take an actor oscarized like Jamie Foxx, a charismatic actor like Gerald Butler, an intrigue to cut the breath and the turn is played! Life cross Turned in Philadelphia, the cradle of American justice, this city saw being born the civil law heir to the “commun run English law”. The choice of the place is rather judicious. In this incredible city Clyde Shelton (Gerald Butler) lives honest citizen, married with child, he lives in large and beautiful house. Jusqu' at the day when violence comes s' to invite in its hearth. Two armed men make irruption and remove the life so that Clyde has moreover expensive. Then qu' he does not cure evil which corrodes it, he learns that the murderers who killed his wife and her daughter haggled over their sorrow, and l' ultimate culprit leaves prison under his eyes. Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), elegant and sure from him, this prosecutor will come to cross the road of the deposed father. It will buckle l' business which relates to Clyde Sheldon hastily, which will involve collateral damage inconsiderately. Significant hearts, s' to abstain This thriller psychological surprises by its rate/rhythm and violence qu' it generates. In addition to playing with our attention, because suspense is of setting, our stomachs are put at severely testeds. Certain images plead guilty with the court of l' horror so much violence of those are obvious. The scenes of murder could have been bâclées (like very often), but no detail n' is saved and c' is here that the film made all the difference. One flirte sometimes with the gore and c' perfectly is assumed and controlled. The realizer chose certainly to show us these images to give relief to the narration and to the character, the dimension of l' horror takes seat and one is then captivated beginning with the end. Jamie Foxx n' has any more nothing to prove as for its talent of actor, it confirms just qu' it can hold its audience in breath, one believes in him as of the first minute. Vis-a-vis him, rather extraordinary actors, but none will encase the step to him. Seen in 300, Gerald Butler diverts us by certain moments and a real empathy s' install for its character. One could recognize oneself in his combat, because nowadays it is very rare never not to be disappointed a legal system. Whatever the country, justice will worry and always make speak d' it. This subject is universal and will be always d' topicality, the scenario writer, Kurt Wimmer with whom one must of the scenarios such as Salt or L' Business Thomas Crown, aims just with its screen and will arrive to us bluffer jusqu' at the last minute. The realization is controlled, one knows since Braquage with l' Italian that F. Gary Gray is an excellent technician of the cinema. It knew to exploit the coldness of Philadelphia, the frozen images of the city manage to give a heart to the feature film. If you surprise yourselves with rager by reading the newspapers when you learn that criminals leave prison too early, that certain judgements seem to you too light, That justice is made is made for you. The settlings of score completely exceed our imagination, the film burns all the authorized limits. A haletant and époustouflant spectacle which returns justice to black films.

LAC was released last Wednesday in France and at the end of the film people were delighted. They cheered and applauded. I heard a lot of people saying good comments. I loved it but it was dubbed in French and I missed his voice but yay for seeing it in a theater!

LAC is amazing , one the best avenger movies i have seen i years. I thought that Gerry did an excellent Job making me feel sympathy. disgust and fear for Clyde Shelton. Judging Shelton by the beginning of the movie , i wouldn't think that he would be able to kill. That just shows that most people are capable when the switch is pushed. Especially people with latent sociopath tendency's. The prison scene when he gott the steak surprised me a bit , since i taught safety measures where strict in US. Just a minor nitpick though. I think that Gerry and Jamie swapping roles was probably for the best. No doubt that Jamie would have done a good Job , i think Gerry needed another chance to prove his skill. Not that he needed to for me , since he did and amazing portrayal of the phantom. It's just some people just don't get it. I also like how this movie addresses how the system is very flawed. In Norway , if a bugler/rapist brooke into my home and if i attacked him in selfdefence, then i could be charged for assault and battery. In Norway even if you murder someone , max penalty is only 21 years. Some criminals is when let out earlier because of good behavior.
