My Mother's recipes disappeared when she died too. I really was unhappy & even now & its been a few years. oh wow ~ usurus...that was a great find reading of burns...nice. jhawk so sorry. its never easy. when our mother passed, we sisters quickly put together a wonderful recipe book (mom liked to cook) where each person would relate in writing to a particular dish or culinary event that was close to them. its now a cherished book for each family member. so much 'life' is centered around the kitchen table....rightly so. i'd get some solitude and try to remember what foods you liked best...then write it down. talk to your other family members and exchange recollections. our family recipes are treasures....happy hunting! keep us posted when you unearth some family goodies!!

That is such a lovely idea. My mum is alive and well but it would be lovely to present her with something like this. A joint project, as it were. Thank you for the inspiration dawne Jhawk, I hope you are sucessful in compiling your own

Ok. here's a few of the books that I've read. I stress these are history, not fiction, but they are not dry nor 'academic' and are easy to read.
The biography of Mary Queen of Scots by Antoina Fraser
The Steel Bonnets History of the Border Reivers by George Madonald Fraser
Scotland: The Story of a Nation by Magnus Magnusson.
On DVD:
Anything with Neil Oliver:
A History of Ancient Britain
A History of Scotland
Vikings
These were all shown on the BBC, and I've checked that they are available on DVD, but I can't say what the situation is outside of the UK.
Simon Schama: A History of Britain.
If you subscribe to iTunes, there's loads of podcasts out there, some better than others.

I want the dragon! Teepat, that's not a dragon, that's Nessie!!! I don't think Nessie is a dragon - don' ask me what she is, though! I like the Billy Connelly.

I found this whilst snooping around. I want this badly, and I can't even knit!! I'd say in the back left to right: Robert Burns, obviously Billy Connolly, William Wallace. No clue on the last 2 but the right one is obviously some soccer hero. Front: on the left some kind of pie?, Nessie and a Scottish terrier Bonnie Prince Charlie and Andy Murray. The pies are Tunnocks tea cakes, a lovely biscuity/ chocolate thing with squishy meringue in the middle. BTW there are similar books out there with titles such as How To Knit Your Own Boyfriend and How To Knit Your Own Zombie.

Maybe a plesiosaur? Can't be a dragon, because the water from the loch would extinguish the fire, surely?
