I bought the DVD yesterday when i was in the grocery store. I had mix feelings. I was thrilled that the DVD was finally out , but the same time i know that it doest bode well when a movie goes straight to DVD's. I really liked the movie. I really felt for George. Even though he had screwed up a lot , i got the feeling that he was really trying his best. I liked it was 't the typical dad that doest his best to save his son and ex-wife relationship. I usually dislike character like that , and feel that the ex wife or girlfriend is an idiot to take them bakc. Gerry made George Dryer a very like able charater. It was a nice feel-movie. I admit it's not the type a move i would dusin times over , but maybe several times cause of Gerry. That scene with Noah and Gerry under the three was a very touching one , i almost started crying. I really recommend to watch this movie , even though i feel it's not of Gerry best movies. It's still a pretty good movie though.

Finally got my dvd's of Chasing Mavericks and Playing for Keeps together today. I think they were late because they held them to ship them together. I've already watched CM twice on On Demand but Playing for Keeps will be featured tonight.

rented it. liked it again but still didn't think the producers messed iot up and the dennis quaid character was a floater. Gerry was spot on. If they would have left it straight drama, it would have been on top.

I rented PFK at Redbox today. I want to watch it before I decide to buy it. I bought CM last week and have already watched it a couple of times. I originally saw CM in the theater on opening weekend. The surfing scenes are so much better on the big screen.

Enjoyed watching PFK a couple of times on my new dvd. It seems to get better each time. Loved the fact that it's non-stop Beautiful Gerry and I think he did well conveying George's story and was very sweet and tender. I was surprised to find that I appreciated the other actors/roles more, seeing something a bit more nuanced beyond the craziness. Not G's best by any means, but I am happy I have the dvd.

I am very happy to have PFK and CM DVDs. I loved both of them and watched them both with non-G fans and they liked both films and would have gone to see them with me in the theater. They did not understand why the media gave both such bad reviews. They did not see them as bad movies, could have been better, but enjoyed the performances. Thought G was great in both parts. They are now GB fans. Love them. G always makes me happy and his performances were well-done. I love George and rooted for him. In CM, I loved Frosty, it was wonderfully done, broke my heart. I liked the last scene of PFK with them playing futbol in the front yard, they reunification of a family, it was not sappy, it seemed perfect. It was to me a more family film then rom.com.

My husband said Gerry was good in PFK but that Dennis Quaid and the Women ruined it. My thought even though I like sappy endings, it should have been more in the vein of a real struggle and loss...meaning he didn't get the girl in the end. It seemed too "nice". Like there should have been more struggle emotionally for Gerry's character. He would have done so well with that AND that would've made it a hit.

Buckeye I think I remember reading that that was the original ending of the movie and Gabriele Muccino was pressured to change it. I agree with you - I would love to see a Director's cut

I thought almost the same thing as your husband. IMO, they should have just left out the Dennis Quaid character. He didn't fit in with the movie. I thought the women gave it some comic relief. I also think the movie would have been better off if George hadn't got his family back in the end. The ending of the film didn't seem to flow with the rest of it. I heard there was a different ending before but test audiences didn't like it, so it was changed. Overall, I liked the film, thought G did a really great job of the struggling dad. I plan on getting my own copy this weekend.
PS I can't wait for OHF!

I agree with you. Gerry did a great and loved the struggling father bit. But the other woman and Dennis didn't fit in. What made sense was Cat. zeta Jones with the job offer. The usual dilemma " do i go for my big break and make carer or choose my family ?" I thought that the horny/love starved soccer moms was bit cliche and unrealistic. Other i loved the moments bet wen Gerry and Noah.

oh my goodnesS! i'm on the tail end of having a huge & complete GERRY FEST of all his films since 2009. man oh man....this man has been BUSY! ((BIG GRIN)) 'Playing for Keeps'..............now, I fully understand 'why' the name was changed midstream. this film was a beautiful, light hearted little nugget of redemptive love and commitment. Gerry showed much of himself in this film. he spoke in his native tongue. he showed his heart equal to his mind. I LOVED each and every character....LOL dennis quaid....dennis DENNIS....this role, like movie43, is PERFECT to bring out his wild & wacky sense of humor. he is a funny guy....and he STILL looks good while aging. very believeable. and the women WOA....katerine zeta jones I have always liked very much.... she is SO cute being such a cat LOL Grrrrrr - you go girl. very fiery, very smart, enjoyable to watch bc she surprises you.... and you can tell Gerry and katerine enjoyed working with each other. I like the blond, brunette, redhead thing....that was very fair to have all flavors. umma is always interesting to watch as well, very classy, fun. again, surprising, heady. the story was put very well together, editing, script...et al...the little boy was adorable. the neighbor/landlord coming full circle was good. and Jessica biel is something else. she's got such a clean-cut sporty way, perfect as middleclass mom or superhero action....always enjoyed her work too. what a great cast....judy greer, I've seen over the years in variety of films...she is like a breath of fresh air...funny, energetic, nervous LOL cute.... this is a 'feel good' movie...I loved the deeper meaning behind it too. and I LOVE love LOVE how Gerry has chosen his films, a wide variety, to speak to his audience....the message is clearly given....enjoy LIFE and LIVE IT. adjust and tweek priorities and do what is right! because afterall....love is what matters most! okey dokey, time to skidattle....going to watch 'chasing mavericks' in the gerard film festival..... later on today....lets see....wheres the man now? mexico? is it 'carnival time' safe travels mr.Gbutler.....xoxo
