If you girls want the 2-disc POTO with ALW commentary I bought it from Wal-Mart on line. It was awhile ago, but I think I paid less than $25.00.

Gerry was a beautiful Phantom! I swear there was no comparison between him and Raoul. I think Christine was a bubble headed ninny for not picking the Phantom.

I agree with all. My first intro to GB was POTO. The problem I have is every time I watch it I can't get the music out of my head. He was fabulous and gave a depth to the roll that you can't get on the stage. I hate when I hear critics criticize his performance I do a slow burn.

Like a lot of people The Phantom, to me was Michael Crawford. I was a bit horrified when I heard they were making a movie - but I love the story so had to go see it. Having seen it fell totally for Gerry - had to go look him up on imdb lol. It still is the only film that I have gone to see more than once and the cinema - cost be dammed lol. Past the point of no return was the highlight, but then that has always been my favorite song.I listen in the car to the soundtrack and still cry at the end! My only complaint was that he was still too good looking as the phantom - they should have made him a little more deformed (sorry Gerry x) So began my longest celebrity crush.

I felt the same way about Michael Crawford until I saw Gerry. In fact somewhere on the web I signed a petition when they were in the talking stage of making the movie that called for Crawford to play movie Phantom. Now years later I am still eating crow.

I saw POTO on broadway for the first time this past October. It was beautiful. But in my eyes Gerry is the best Phantom. He is amazing. The scene on the roof when he sees Christine and Raoul breaks my heart. Gerry is so good at showing his hurt and anger. He really doesn't get the recognition that he deserves for his acting.

I have never seen the stage version live , only on DVD. But Micheal Crawford was the first verison i heard. I did't see thge movie until couple of years ago. I can still understand that a lot of people were upset , since Hollywood to have a habit of ruining god classics and Crawford IS the Phantom for them.If i were more attaced to Micheal Crawford , i might a throw a fit too. I guess Gerry is great at proving people wrong. I agree that they should have made the deformity more severe like in the stage version. I know they had to make that bad so people how saw the stage version could see it well , and things are show more well in movie. But i still think the derformaty looked more like reallly bad sunburn or rash ( sorry Gerry). I have the DVD on Lon Chaney as the Phantom from 1925 , and when people saw the demasking scene back then, they fainted. I think it's kinda interesting that the deformatiy has been downplayed over the years in the movies, You would think that they would make the dermormaity worse to be able to shock people today since we are so jaded. imgur.com/gallery/gVqGh I know that Gerry was botherd by the reactions when hw walked on set with makeup and i can understand that must been a really pain. Thet could have used CGI though , but i guesss they did't have the time or budget . Some of the clips from the 1925 e were actully used in kiddie shows like the Baby Muppets and such. When you think about it , in the movie that the Phantom ( Gerry )was part of freak show seem kinda weird and kinda of plotwhole Back then there were much worse case like the Elephant man and many others. I know since the Phantom was so young and he had to have lived at Opera for long , the freakshow version was done.

Remember this is a musical and the most costly movie made with private funds. ALW and Co funded this and if they wanted CGI they would have put it in the movie. This was a love story with music. If it was just a movie they would go for all they had and make it shocking, but the music is the star. If you play the 2nd disc you will see what it took to do this. The mask was redone so the Phantom could sing. Michael Crawford was great in his time, but he would look like a Lech next to a 16 yr old girl.
