I wonder if the movie version of Sweeney Todd also got much critic like other musical versions.

Sometimes when i have trouble sleeping , i listen to " Music of the Night". It's become my lullaby. I struggled with anxiety issues for years and hearing Gerry sing soothes me. Other then David Bowie , no other singer has had that effect on me. Somehow , listing to G sing makes me feel less alone. Just like the lyrics in no one would listen " i hear your fears , your torment and your tears".

Just read the IMDB entry for Michael Crawford and noticed he too appeared as one of the background players in a stage production of Coriolanus.
Also I have a memory from the mid seventies of watching a national news broadcast that reported Michael Crawford having a rather nasty scuba diving accident on holiday abroad. This would have been at the height of his Some Mothers Do have Em fame. I wish I could find some evidence on the Internet of this story because if it is correct then both had near drowning experiences.
Does anyone know of MC's possible accident. My memory could be playing tricks on me. It is a horrible coincidence if my memory is correct.

I know it's just a movie, but he just swings in volumes of emotion ... very positive emotions

I went to a store named Vintage & found POTO in good condition plus a few others like Timeline & Tales of Blackfreighter for only a couple bucks in good shape -- trying to round out G's collection. Have to watch the budget.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXJt6mfKsaAHave some fun looking for Gerry. I found him 3 possibly 4 times and if you think that is him sitting in the make-up chair, that would make 5. I should say that this video is sung by cast and crew of POTO with Joel Schumacher. Funny and terribly off key!

So glad you both got a kick out of it. Do believe I missed one more though. Dawn 27, I think we need a report on your daughters reaction to seeing POTO. This is one of my favourite videos of Gerry singing in the sound studio. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mPW16cWaoIThanks enough for your replies. Jessie

masks. hmmmmm. this film was SO worth seeing now esp. since this pivotal film launched gerry into another level of filming. i am SO glad hugh jackman did not take this role bc gerry was fantastic. i can see why so many women really fell for him in this role...... rich, luxurious, baroque, sensual, dark, bawdy ~ the sets and camera work were ...Oh MY God....if you love gothic style this is it. every frame filled your visual sense to the max... upstairs was golden and glitter, fluff and frill...even the golden statues applauded the robust feminine figure yet beneath, was austere, deep in the hallows of the phantoms dwelling...dark, watery, webbed, faint hints of warmth (bed robes, candalabras....) as you were entering looming masculine statues, cold concrete...did this represent 'his heart'? kind of like the story 'a rose for emily' where the house itself personified the characters soul... your ears were tickled...beautiful singing, heart rendering ballads.....melts and lingers......turns to taste, almost....each and every character left an impression, each one choregrahed perfect...everyone 'fit'....i enjoyed the comedic suggestions..... anyway, i could go on and on....the love story....the possessive nature, jealous, angry, desirious, sensual & alluring....((ouch)) i think we all understand what these deep passions are....somewhere along our life....we all have experienced this desire to 'own' ...take.....and not give back....to imprison....to become so desperate...to be so....alone...... i loved the ending of this story...how this man, a hideous loathsome monster, or seemingly so. truly understood that he was NOT such, and it was through his 'love' he was able to let her go.....how sweet. and he was able to do this ONLY bc this tender hearted young woman saw past his 'mask' and loved him no matter.... i like to think when the phantom vanished behind the shards of broken mirror....he too was set free.................

Tks so much for the video on the cast and crew singing MOTN. I had not seen that before. I have mentioned before that POTO was my intro to GB. He is the only Phantom for me since. I purchased the 2-disc and love seeing what it takes to do a movie like this and how ALW choose GB. Since I have purchased all of GB's movies. Waiting on CM and PFK. One of my fav is Shattered. I don't know why that was not a hit. Everyone I show that to loves it. Gerry needs to change the people that promote his films. He does great wk and I don't understand why they are not dist to a wider aud. Maybe I just don't know how it is done.

you know florida....SO with you regarding 'shattered' this was the 3rd G film seen ( tomb raider~ cinema, beowulf & shattered~ DVD) and i wondered why didnt this hit theatres and make a BIG splash? this film, like RNR & 300 are topnotch all the way around.
the writer & actor have such kismet in these performances... every beat, every nuance & gesture perfect...there is an ease and grace evident when the the script sinks to the persons core. it 'becomes' the performer and visa versa....
POTO has struck me in other ways....the sensuality, lusting & the allure of an innocent toward new 'forbidden' desires is obvious. but, it is the complication and twist i find very heady. like peeling back layers, more like extracting a walnut...it is what isn't said i found interesting. here we have a neglected and abused malformed orphan who knew nothing but pain and abandonment. only after another adolescent, who took pity, squirreled him away, to be free, or seemingly free of torment, but still encased in isolation, under the roof of a 'theatre'....an opra house. he grows into manhood. but....guilty, bitter, ashamed, angry....this is what isolation and lack of love will do. he becomes a voyer? a peeping tom? what other depravity besets this male who was raised up ony deformed on his face (and then mind) where the rest of his body was 'neglected' and alone.....so, he hears the sobs and prayers of a lonely girl. a beautiful, tender, innocent whom he falls dearly in love....but, this is yet another mask of the phantom...he pretends to be 'the angel of music'...he becomes her 'father / teacher/ mentor/ guide'....there is SO much in this story. its almost intoxicating...there you go...the 'new' high LOL...anyway, i really liked the way the director helped emma to portray with only her actions, no words....falling for this mysterious man, allowing herself the attraction, the seduction.... even after discovering her betrayl....that is very heady....because afterall....unconditional love is the triumpant ending...or, beginning......
