What name would you give the Stranger?
It's a tough one.
There was a peep who wrote a short story of what happened when he returned. I thought her name for him was perfect.
Ian.

LOL, I know. It's brilliant.
Speaking of brilliant, I wish one of you brilliant writers here would continue Ian and Lizzie's story. It is so ripe with possibilities!
I tried, but Erik wouldn't let me continue. I'm afraid I belong only to him. LOL!

I just watched this again last night. I saw it for the first time over the summer when I was still working my way through all his movies for the first time. It moved me then, but I have to say, I liked it even better the second time because I paid a lot more attention to the acting itself instead of just trying to follow the story line. G is just terrific in this movie. He absolutely nails this character (Ian btw is perfect). He's such the opposite of Frankie's father and exactly what Lizzie needs, and he knows it. The ending is just so perfect too and pretty open ended I might add. In general, I don't find British films to be as formulaic as U.S. films, so this was a real pleasure to watch again. There are so many great moments in this film but the way G responds to Lizzie's news about Frankie's dad's gift to Frankie and the kiss at the end are two of my favorite G moments. Badgirl has an exceptional tribute to this movie on YT. I found it the other night. If you get a chance, watch it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByjV4AKqy4k

I saw this film again last night, for once I found out about it in time to catch it all on TVO, brilliant as there are no commerical breaks, and again I was all weepy at the end. The movie is just the perfect movie - everything about it was done with just the right touch. Less is indeed more. I did notice that Gerry's accent even then is not as strong as the other cast members. Could it be that the time he did spend in the US and Canada in his younger years watered it down even before he started acting or is that a Paisely accent vs a pure Glaswegian accent.
For an added bonus TVO had a little segment in between Dear Frankie and the second movie feature Volver, a Spanish movie which I did end up watching, with Penelope Cruise and which was hilarious. A nice counterpoint.
Both films involved the theme of parents lying to their children so there was a discussion on that and using clips from both films to illustrate their points.
The one man was an movie reveiwer and said the Gerard Butler character is almost like God or like an angel the way he appears and then disappears.
And for the first time, duh, I realized hey there is sequel potential for Dear Frankie but then again why mess with perfection or should I say pairfection. LOL

Went to the video store last night, and walked by LAC, GAMER, TUT - can't believe he's got all these out in the 'new arrivals' sections still. Seen em all! Good for you G.
Looking for something nice to watch and remembered Dear Frankie. Found it to my delight and took it home.
When hubby asked 'what did you get' he rolled his eyes at me when I said 'Okay, another Gerry film, but I've wanted to watch this one for a while.' We love smaller movies, indies, foreign, not so 'Hollywood' so we proceeded to watch it.
We absolutely loved it. Both of us! Definitely one of his best. The story, the performances, the simplicity, the unexpected twist in the end, and that pause/kiss...OMG! It was very sweet - as per my fb status today. I love it when you can get into the lives of the characters and feel their angst. There were tears on several occasions. Emily Mortimer and Jack McElhone were amazing and the story was so touching that I didn't even mind that it took 40 minutes for Gerry to appear!
Gerry as the stranger was kind, sensitive, assertive and gentle. Just adored him. And the cast was small and simple - usually the best combination.
Canadia, just like in Volver - that too was a great movie and I saw it on the shelf last night as well, but I had already seen it. Love the indie, foreign films - they have such substance. And I agree not to mess with perfection. I love the ending - not all wrapped up nice and tidy, or predictable.
Two thumbs way up for Dear Frankie. I think I'll watch it again before taking it back, as someone suggested. It's a favourite now.
So far in the past month or so I've seen BH, GAMER, HTTYD, TUT, DF, Please (short) - keep em coming!
Gerry, make more films like this please!! Pick stories that are powerful and moving. I absolutely love your intensity!

SPOILER
I love Dear Frankie, it is an awesome movie. I wanted Gerry and Mom to get together. Nice kiss he gave her though and it was really sweet how Gerry's character became a dad to that boy for only just a weekend.

Vicky, if you are interested in indie films, may I suggest One More Kiss, if you haven't already seen it? It is an earlier movie with Gerry. The accent is still there, his hair is lovely and curly, and it is a very moving film. Just fantastic. One of my favorites.

I just finished watching "Dear Frankie"... Wow. I cried. Gerry is confirmed once more to me that he is GREAT actor. Obviously, in every role he plays... Wow. I could screencap every scene he was on. But this is my favourite:

I totaly love that movie, was watching it yesterday...Gerry was a good daddy!! Totally agree with you. I love that scene when Frankie hugged him for the first time - The Stranger didn't know how to react. I like his character - it's mysterious, sexy, with heart - just the way I love it.
