Now this is in relation to the movie not regards to the person it's based on...I hope I make sense & well to each their own...Charity is awesome but if this movie is going to be, religious in any way, it'll be one Gerry movie I will skip. No offense but any walk of life can do great, great things, not just one religious group.
I have to speak my mind & now my mouth is shut. Just my personal opinion.

Well since Mr. Childers is a preacher religion cannot be avoided and the fact of the matter is if you are doing a biopic you must be true to the story of the person you are depicting - religion is part of the reason for the strife in Sudan and religion is what changed around the life of this man. Given he is the Machine Gun Preacher however he is not your average preacher which is why the story was so enticing to Hollywood and Gerry specifically. Whether one is religious or not there are universal human values that transcend any religion like the fact that genocide is wrong, displacing people from their homes is wrong, and orphaning children is wrong and trying to saving them is right. I think that is going to be the one of the messages of the film - that people can change their lives for the better, Sam was a rough character earlier in his life and one man's fight to save and help these children in the middle of an ugly war. Those are universal human values anyone of any religious background or atheist or agnostic can appreciate it. I don't think it is going to be a preachy movie anyway but the reflection of an action packed life of a colourful character and my guess is the Sudan story is going to be the focal point of the movie or at least the second half.

I can assure you that if traditional Hollywood entities have anything to do with it they will totally whitewash any religious theme out of it. If you do not see it because of religious overtones you will be missing some amazing acting by G. It is those deeper roles that G needs to do to get some critical acclaim.

The religious aspect of Sam Childers life, which is obviously a big part of him, will have to be part of the movie, since it's his religion that had such a big impact on some of the routes he has chosen in his life so far. But I doubt it they will make it a completely religious movie, in order to reach "the masses." I agree with you, Joy. This is defiinitely a role Gerry needs to take on at this point, and I think it is a very nice choice he has made. I have high hopes for this one, and I hope it will be the one that will finally open the eyes of the Hollywood critics, and give G the credit he so deserves.

www.celebrity-mania.com/news/view/00012581.htmlVera Farmiga's Pregnancy Costs Her a Movie Role Mon, 19 April 2010 23:07:53 ET Academy Award-nominee Vera Farmiga won't star in "Machine Gun Preacher". Although she has been set to play Gerard Butler's on-screen wife in the upcoming movie, the Alex Goran of "Up in the Air" has to give up her role after discovering that she is expecting baby No. 2, In Touch Weekly reported. An insider told the publication that the 36-year-old "is three months pregnant and due in October." As for the reason why she couldn't continue with her involvement in the movie project, the insider explained, "The role would have meant traveling to Africa this summer, but because her baby is due in the fall, she would have been too far along to make the trip." Although she backed out from "Preacher", the star of "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" is reportedly still planning to move on with her directorial debut project. She is expected to serve behind the lens for "Higher Ground", an adaptation of Christian Carolyn Briggs' memoir, "This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost". Vera got married to husband Renn Hawkey in September 2008. On January 15, 2009 just before she started working for "Up in the Air", the couple welcomed their first son together, Fynn. On having to work two weeks after giving birth, Vera told USA Today, "I could never reclaim these first precious moments of maternity. [But] I needed to pay my mortgage. It wasn't an option. I had to do the role."

Machine Gun Preacher–slated to go into production in June Uncategorized — posted by otownrog on April, 28 2010 9:17 AM Discuss This: Comments(0) | Add to del.icio.us | Digg it Following up on a story I covered back during Bike Weeks. This from Production Weekly… Machine Gun Preacher, the film about Sam Childers, the biker preacher-defender of Sudanese orphans that James Bond vet Marc Forster wants to direct and Gerard Butler is slated to star in looks closer to a “go,” with a start date in June. They’ll film this in Pennsylvania, according to Production Weekly. “Butler plays real-life hero Sam Childers — the one man fearless enough to fight a ruthless army outnumbering him 1,000 to 1. The fierce edge that once led Childers to a life of crime now fuels his daring crusade into Africa’s most dangerous battle zones to rescue children from the clutches of rebel warlords. His mission is clear: protect the children, no matter the cost.” blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_movies_blog/

its awesome that gerry is coming full circle back to the 'christian theme' (remember Dracula 2000?) only now, on the other side of the fence.
i'm so excited to see how this movie will be made. the plight of these poor 'lost boys' & 'lost girls' is heart wrenching. love a good movie with a message!
pennsylvania is a great state. its the home of the abolitionist movement. cool. interesting, huh.
