This is really a surprise! www.showblitz.com/2012/02/butler-adds-brilliant-role.htmlBUTLER TAKES A SHINE TO 'BRILLIANT' ROLE EXCLUSIVE: Gerard Butler is set to star in Lakeshore Entertainment’s diamond-heist thriller BRILLIANT, which will reunite him with helmer Robert Luketic, who directed the Scottish thesp in THE UGLY TRUTH, Variety's Jeff Sneider reports. Butler replaces Eric Bana, who was in negotiations to topline the pic as of September 2011. First-time scribe Gillian Gorfil wrote the script, which follows a small-time criminal who partners with a female thief to pull off a daring diamond heist. Sidney Kimmel, Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg will produce with Gorfil ("Blood Diamond"). The quartet is still searching for a female lead before the pic starts production this May in Boston. Butler, who's coming off dramatic turns in Marc Forster's "Machine Gun Preacher" and Ralph Fiennes' "Coriolanus," is prepping for a busy year. In addition to a role in Relativity's omnibus comedy "Movie 43," he toplines Curtis Hanson's surfing pic "Of Men and Mavericks" and Gabriele Muccino's romantic sports pic "Playing the Field." He's also attached to star in two action pics -- Antoine Fuqua's "Hunter Killer" and Simon West's "Thunder Run."

I so wish they could get Katherine Heigl. There was such great chimistry with these two and Robert Luketic.
Plus, I am already thinking of extras on the DVD, Luketic did a great jon on TUT one. :-)

Talk about a out of the blue announcement, I was waiting to see photos of Gerry in Baton Rouge,LA and not in Boston.
I think this sounds like a good project, but it is listed as a Thriller on IMDb not a comedy so it will be interesting to see who they cast in the female role. I hope it is a comedy/thriller though.
Very happy for Gerry but I hope it doesn't keep him from doing Thunder Run.

Wow! I'm all big smiles over this. Directors comments segments on TUT DVD with Luketic and Lucchesi are terrific discussing the movie and I love the Gerry comments. This is another example of how Gerry's work ethic and the fact that he really gives it his all makes producers and directors happy to work with him (and he's so much fun to have around). Remember, Lucchesi and Rosenberg did Gamer, too. I'd love to see him in this type story. It will be fun to see how it all works out--Thunder Run seems to be pretty certain. Thanks for posting this, Elenoire

I am hoping it is more thriller than comedy. Since Thunder Run just announced it was filming in May and this film says it is filming in May I am curious to see how this is all going to fit or what might get dropped.

Thanks Scottishdreamer thefilmstage.com/news/gerard-butler-steals-eric-banas-brilliant-role/Gerard Butler Steals Eric Bana’s ‘Brilliant’ Role Posted by Nick Newman, on February 29, 2012 at 4:40 pm The bearer of mildly disappointing news this afternoon would have to be ShowBlitz, who inform us that Gerard Butler will be substituting for Eric Bana on the Robert Luketic-helmed heist picture Brilliant. While the latter of those two leads looked ready to star back in late September, this whole enterprise appeared just a little out-of-the-ordinary when news fell silent for roughly five months. And now this mystery has been solved. Written by Gillian Gorfil, Brilliant centers on “a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist.” Taking past depictions of this basic character into account, I’d argue that such a role might be a better fit for the more “roguish” side of Butler‘s style; that is to say, it certainly stands in opposition to the internal and contemplative work Bana‘s been doing for more than decade. Add in the fact that he and Luketic worked together on The Ugly Truth — which also gives you a better idea of what kind of movie Brilliant may turn out to be — and I can’t question the overall logic of this choice, even if it’s not how I would’ve preferred things to go down. After a female lead is found over the next couple of months, production will kick off in May.

That sounds like my kind of movie. I am way more excited about this one than Thunder Run.
It makes me sad though that so many movie sites write how they're disappointed Gerry took over from Eric and how they don't want Heigl in the movie with him... Bana is a good actor and he made some good project choices, however he has nothing on Gerry. Plus TUT made 200 Mio world-wide so Gerry, Katherine and Robert did something right there. I thought TUT was an above average rom-com. I wouldn't mind seeing Heigl again, however if they could cast somebody like Sandra Bullock that would be fabulous too.
Yes, it's weird that this movie and Thunder Run film at the same time.... I wonder if TR is mostly voice work.
I'm not too concerned about Bana turning down this project. That happens all the time. Actors have conflicts and have to drop out of projects. Gerry has dropped out of quite a few that somebody else then took over as well. I think that happens a lot in Hollywood. I can see Gerry going for the same roles as Eric, similar age and type. I'm really looking forward to this one.
