oh my Lord steeler.....oh yeah.
the story is based on the pulitzer prize writer Frank McCourt 'teacher man' memoirs. he was a teacher for 30 years before becoming a writer. he was irish decent from brooklyn, new york who wrote the popular 'angelas ashes'.
mr. mccourt died this past july 2009 of cancer at 78.
like the poet robert burns....the dramatic portrayal of these 'celtic' men are right up gerry's alley. who knows...down the road perhaps? he seems to be born to do these characters almost, you know. he's got that complicated yet compassionate soul and his brogue is heavy yet beautifully lyrical. i hope too he takes on these roles.

I read two Frank McCourt novels, Angela's Ashes and Tis, both were excellent and what a life he had. I would love to see Gerry do this as well. They already did the movie Angela's Ashes about Frank McCourts childhood. I guess it could start off how he came to America and such, that is what Tis was about and it led up to how he became a teacher.
His style of writing made his books interesting to read. If someone is able to write with an Irish accent, he certainly did. I remember his Grandmothers reaction the first time she saw him.
"Bah! He has the look of the North about him!"
She didn't like the people in Northern Ireland. And he had a constant eye infection and he described his eyes as looking like two piss holes in the snow. LOL!!!
I read his books and how bad he had it growing up and the poverty and yet look what he did with his life and then hear some people talk about the strife they've faced in this country, it makes me want to spit.
Frank McCourt got just one pair of shoes a year as a boy and when the soles wore out they would nail rubber from old tires to the bottom of his shoes.
Do you know though I heard his books are banned in Ireland because his childhood was SO bad and his mother couldn't get any financial aid from the government or the Catholic Church that Ireland felt the books made the country look bad so they are not sold there.
His mother had to finally resort to more or less trading sexual favors to her own uncle to keep the two kids she had left fed and a roof over their heads. Before this she had lost three children to starvation and terrible living conditions.
Growing up he hated his mother for more or less prostituting herself to the uncle but later I think he understood.

How horrible for him... I've never read the books myself, but would read them if this movie goes through and Gerry plays the lead.

oh geesh, i guess gotta read his work now. the only ficiton writers have taken a gander at were the millers - john miller and arthur miller...
and yes, 'some' irish folks can be very 'thick'....my family comes from belfast, which is northern ireland.
a couple of stories: my great-grandfather adam when in new york city on st. patricks day would go into the irish catholic bars wearing an 'orange' tie (meaning protestant) looking for a donnybrook. what a tough ol'bugger, eh? another story, when my mother married my father (italian catholic) he cried....'diane, why are you marrying outside your race?'...he must have been an awful ol'coot?
as far as frank mccourt...WHEW...its amazing what people endure growing up (much like richard pryor and those poor children raised in eastern indian brothels...whew)....thank God the human spirit can and will transcend the more horrific circumstances to fly upward....

This is one project I seriously hope comes to fruition. I've seen Angela's Ashes, and McCourt is portrayed as such an interesting, animated kid in that. I'd love to see Gerry play him as an adult. And the fact that he was an English teacher is a draw for me since that's also what I do. This would totally rock in my opinion.
