Euroman Gerard Butler for good style : "I would like it rough and simple "
By: Ditlev Fejerskov, March 29, 2016
The man's masculinity has been discussed countless times in recent years. Some believe that the right man has been hiding away and need to get out of the darkness like cave men. While others agree that masculinity concept just got a whole new meaning in the 21st century.
Academic research of men and masculinity began in the 1970s, but it has gained significant momentum over the past 20 years. Here you are also gone from looking at men from narrowly defined roles to analyze masculinity as something complex and changeable.
The Scottish Hollywood star Gerard Butler, who is best known for his lead role in '300', has over the past two years has been the face of Hugo Boss' fragrance campaign 'Man of Today'.
The German fashion brand chose the actor to visualize the modern gentleman, as they believe that Butler on the one hand stands for strength, calmness and compassion and initiative and open-mindedness on the other.
Euroman.dk have met the 46-year-old actor to talk about what he himself believes that begræbet 'modern man' includes, and how he should get dressed.
As a public figure do you feel pressured to be the perfect modern man?
"Fortunately, I'm just saying. No, it's for fun. In my job you can as well feel the pressure of always having to look good. I try not to go too much into it, but at the same time I do not want to be scandalized by what I see in the mirror in the morning. As I have grown older, I am more concerned with my appearance. And it is good to use some effort into it, but if you do too much, I do not think that you are a man anymore. "
What according to you a gentleman?
"My definition is probably a fairly classic. I see him as a knight who has the strength, dedication and passion in his life. But at the same time also is humble and quiet, both internally and towards other people. I have a good friend who always said that you should just do as the old British actor David Niven. He was my favorite actor since I boy; he was charmed, fun, nice and had just class. "
Are you inspire other men?
"I try to do that in my role choices. When I choose roles, I think a lot of the messages I send to viewers. I want to inspire people to either take some chances in their lives, gain the courage to make some important decisions, or get them to stand up straight and understand their situation. "
How to deal with each other?
"When I meet people, I try to give them time and treat them with good humor and respect. How I would also like self-treated. After I have become known, I am very conscious of how I treat others. I have many memories of encounters with known from my childhood, and those who were sweetest, is clearly evident to me. "
How much does fashion and style for you?
"As you can see, I am not very fashionable. My style is very simple. I have since my moments where I may enjoy life and carry cool designer clothes. My standard uniform consists of a pair of jeans, leather boots, T-shirt and a leather jacket.
I love jackets, and both my home in New York and L.A. is filled with various jackets. I come from Scotland where it's cold, so we always go with jackets - this is our way to express style. In L.A. Unfortunately, there is rarely a need jackets. When I go home to Scotland, I make sure to have spent my jackets. "
What would you like to express your style?
"I want to show something simplicity, confidence and masculinity. I know that masculinity today is a relative concept, and some believe that the more decorated and well-groomed appearance is also masculine. But it's not my style, I want it a little more rough and simple. "
How do you use your roles to explore new style genre and get inspiration for your personal style?
"I often find something that is more flashy or game compared to my own clothes, I have felt comfortable in the movie set, and have been elated. Often I think: "this shirt I wear everyday." But when I take it in off the set, it will not work anyway.
But I have collected a lot of ideas from things I had on my roles. As part of my contract, I've got a clause is that I can keep clothes and costumes for filming. No matter how wild it is. Either I go even with clothes, otherwise I put it in a charity auction, if the film becomes popular.
