Fifiserafino!! "Gerard Butler writes £1000 cheque and donates tapestry of his face to help Scots school feed children in Malawi" www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/celebrity/gerard-butler-writes-1000-cheque-3289718THE screen heartthrob found out about St Dominic's Primary School's campaign to raise cash for charity Mary's Meals when visiting his mum in Perthshire. HOLLYWOOD hunk Gerard Butler has backed a Scots school’s campaign to help feed kids in Malawi. Gerard learned of the efforts by pupils at St Dominic’s Primary in Crieff, Perthshire, when visiting his mum Margaret in nearby Comrie. They are raising cash to help charity Mary’s Meals cover the cost of a kitchen for a school in Malawi. And Olympus Has Fallen star Gerard, who has a longstanding association with the Scots charity, decided to chip in by donating a £1000 cheque and a “machine-made cross-stitch” artwork of his face to auction. An insider said: “Gerard was in the area and heard about the work the local schoolkids were doing to help others in need. “ He was blown away and keen to donate the full amount of cash they needed to the charity, but his mum insisted that the kids were having fun with their fundraising".“Instead, Gerard wrote the kids a cheque for £1000 and donated the cross-stitch creation, which is about 30in by 22in and which he was given by a fan.” The children have now managed to raise £5000 of their £7000 target and plan to put the artwork up for auction on eBay. Paisley-born Gerard, 44, didn’t want to deface the picture by signing his name on it but the winning bidder will also get a signed photo of him. Gerard travelled on behalf of Mary’s Meals to Liberia in December. He has maintained links with the charity since presenting Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, who founded it with his brother Fergus, with a CNN Hero award in 2010. Mary’s Meals feed more than 860,000 children around the world every school day.

These videos bring me to tears. Mainly because I see how these children are living their lives and deserve so much more. Tears because Magnus cares enough to get food to the children in this world who need it. Tears because Gerry is there being so loving and caring and putting smiles on everyone's faces. Just beautiful!

I was watching the video at work today (naughty Fifi!) on my big computer screen in HD and it struck me how much alike Gerry and Magnus are - even down to the way they hold their mouths when they talk. I wonder if that is to do with the Scottish burr? Beautifully compassionate and strong men, both of them.

Perhaps Gerry looks up to Magnus and will play him someday in the movie about Mary's Meals. He would only have to add the glasses!

He looks good in glasses. But then, he always looks good. (understatement)

NEWS This is the article that I was trying to post about the feeding program yesterday. My links are still not working so I will try this! Hope it works because these lovely children and adults could use your prayers and support! Mary’s Meals offers prayers as the Ebola crisis worsens in West Africa Posted FRIDAY AUGUST 8 2014 by LOUISE HENDERSON in NEWS The Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa has now killed more than 930 people across Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, and has today been declared an international health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO). At this time when many others are at risk of infection – and with stringent preventative measures and movement restrictions in place across the region – all at Mary’s Meals offer their heartfelt thoughts and prayers to those affected. In Liberia, where Mary’s Meals provides a nutritious meal to 128,910 impoverished children every school day, there have been 282 confirmed deaths and President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has declared a 90-day state of emergency. With schools in the country currently out of session for the summer holidays, the operation of the Mary’s Meals school feeding programme has not yet been directly affected. However, the new term is just three weeks away, due to begin on September 1st. The extraordinary measures ordered by the Liberian government, as it works to contain the spread of the virus, mean that schools will remain closed in the country until further notice. Regrettably, therefore, it now looks increasingly likely that the feeding programme will not be able to recommence next month as planned. With this highly probable outcome in mind, Mary’s Meals is now considering other ways in which the charity might utilise its resources in Liberia to support the communities we work in at this difficult time, and we will inform our supporters of any such activity in due course. As a member of the Liberian International Non-Governmental Organisations’ forum (LINGO), Mary’s Meals is also liaising with other aid agencies working in the country, and is in regular contact with the British Embassy and, of course, the Liberian authorities. Mary’s Meals’ head office in Liberia is located in the city of Tubmanburg, Bomi County – one of the areas where Ebola is prevalent. Both Bomi and Grand Cape Mount counties have now been cut off from the capital Monrovia by military blockade. At this time, we will continue to monitor the situation closely and take the necessary precautions to protect our people on the ground. Staff at Mary’s Meals headquarters in Scotland are, as always, in close contact with our Liberian team, based in Tubmanburg.

Prayers for the staff, children and adults in this area. Gerry has to be devastated knowing the number of children and adults he became close to on his visit, that could be affected. Just looking at the smiling faces of the children with Gerry makes my heart sick hoping and praying they have a hedge of protection over them.
