Not sure where this should be posted, so am moving my post here.
In relpy to other posters look at the career of Colin Firth. His role in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice as Mr Darcy at the time actually led to something akin to hysteria in the UK and in some ways could have derailed his career completely.
After that experience he seemed in take a mixture of safe roles in movies where he was not the lead actor to a series of very small indie movies that were barely noticed.
He appeared in odd films like Trauma that no one saw to The Last Legion which was an absolute mess to Where the Truth Lies which to say is a difficult watch is an understatement. I have lost track of turning on my TV to see old Firth movie being shown that I have never heard of and yet his career orbit changed a few years ago.
Think about it his career went up many gears and up into the big time after appearing in a Single Man with a director (Tom Ford) who was a fashion designer. This resulted in an Oscar nom. This set up Firth as an award contender and put in the groundwork for the King's Speech.
All this and a scandal in his private life as well and yet years of miss fires and disappointments seem to have paved the way for major success.
I think Gerard does like to be liked, he seems to like roles with an immense physical edge (surfing et al) He does not seemed to be drawn to the internal type of roles that proved fruitful to the likes of Fassbender or Day Lewis or has of yet not business wise have the clout to get the quality roles that got to Pitt or Clooney.
I do think as a Brit he has done remarkable things in Hollywood. He seems to be well liked on set and amongst his peers. If only he had the confidence to realize that MGP, Coriolanus, Dear Frankie et al are the roles that even though they made little headway at the box office proved his talent.
After all; Clooney was sacked from Rosanne, Pitt was a bit part actor in Dallas, Depp. Hanks, Phiffer, Streep, Spacey were all on TV. Even Harrison Ford was in an episode of Ironside.
All Gerard now needs is timing and a little luck.

The sad things is that Gerry is another living example of an actor who has massive talent , but does get the credit that he deserves. If you look at his movies that that is is his best , but didn't make it big at the box office. Take POTO for example. Phantom of the Opera : I thought that he did an amazing job with his portrayal of his Phantom. It's the only Phantom that makes me cry each time i see(/listen to the monkey music box part. He really did a terrific job showing the Phantom's vulnerability. I'm not a music expert , but i loved his singing, mostly because he put so much passion and pain in it. I think the POTO would have been his big breakthrough , if not for those nasty critics and Phantom phans that claimed that he couldn't sing. They were just mad , cause their precious Micheal Crawford didn't get the part. I also loved Dear Frankie , PS. I love You , Coriolanus and MGP. I think is were Gerry showed his acting skills. The sad thing is that it's not the kinda movie that Hollywood would go for. I love those kinda movies that deep and makes you reflect and touch something deep in your heart and soul. Alas , Hollyweird keeps making those crappy big budget movies that based lot on brainless violence and sex. Don't get me wrong , i enjoy a silly popcorn movies once in awhile , but i want more stimulating movies. Oh believe me, Gerry " stimulates" me in more ways then one. Gerry finaly got his breakthrough with "300". I love the movie since it's motivating and inspirational , but it's does not comes as surprise when Gerry Finlay gets breakthrough , it's move based on violence and alots of skin , typical Hollywood. Don't get my wrongs ladies , i love Gerry only clad in leather underpants , sweaty and growling. I guess the thing is Gerry is brave to do roles that only challenges him on many levels both physically , mentally and emotionally. I happy that he doest take the shortcut and take crappy roles and movies , just because their would big hit at the box office Of course i understand that he needs be in couple big budget movies to put his name out there again , since Coriolanus and MGP wasn't a big hit. It makes me sad since , he put his heart and soul into those movies. I'm really frustrated with movie and music industry in general , because there are alot of people with lousy/mediocre talents that for some reason is very popular. Sadly there are alot of people out who are philistines who just woudl't know what really talents is , even if it bit them in the ass. I have so many times wondered over movies or song " how the h*** is this good. I keep wondering if people are blind or tone deaf. In short , Gerry does have massive talent. Like you said pothos , he just need like and timing. Also if Hollywood wasn't so dam shallow , he would be a big A-lister and drowning in work offers.

photos,i really like this thread and share you're perspective on this matter.only i somehow estimate that Gerry intends to do the kind of movies he does. i have the feeling that his priority's differ mine. i would prefer him doing these as you say `the internal type of roles`. some multilayer story's with different depth and complexity.which he sadly only did a few of although i am often led to assume that he just isn't given the right offers and i really do hope that it is so but i am afraid it just its not the case.
well i keep my fingers crossed besides i enjoy consuming him in any possible way anyhow so i am not complaining here but i think i get where you come from...;-)

I think that the big problem with Hollywood that they mostly go for story's that are simple and many characters that one dimensional. I think Gerry's really picky when comes to movies. Most of the time he does movies with a plot or a character that moves/apples to him. If would loved to see his career take of , but not of it means doing lousy movies that hurts his credibility as an actor.
You can see that entertainment business that the quality is going down the toilet with movies the last, tv series , music , even books. When the comes books I'll use Twilight series. Please to hate me Twilight lovers , i used to love twilight too. After thinking more about , the books is all about just how important it is to have a boy and another classic story were the girls chose the hot bad guy that has stalker behavior and is control freak , over the nice guy that always when there to help her. I think Bella is a weak female character. But that's for another time. I guess it's official that I'm old since " everything is better in my time".
I could go on and on with examples , but you girls get the idea. The doest help that HW is obsessed with youth and looks since for some reason they seem to think that only teenagers and young people from 18-30 watch movies. If only HW had focus on making a really good movie , instead of just thinking ways how make a quick big , Gerry would had plenty good movies to choose from and he would have been really big A-lister right now, I
think that you're right tantemili that Gerry just haven't gotten right offer or THE role , like Tom Hanks Forrest Gump or Morgen Freemans Shawshanks Redemption "Red". I love Gerrys Phantom , so that is THE role for me , since i think that is the most complex character he has played so far. What do you guys think , has Gerry found THE role yet ?

What do you guys think , has Gerry found THE role yet ? damn good thread ladies. awesome good. here's my take: if you loOk at the career trajectory of some of HW greatest iconic acters who've had the staying power infront of their captive audience span years and years....gerry is on tract. american classics leading men from john wayne to robert deniro & heart throbs brad pit, clooney, cruise, dicaprio to....gerard butler...all have starred & cameo literally hundreds of films during their careers...and not all box office or critical acclaim. film making is a love & passion i believe for these fellas. quite honestly simply being 'there' is really a tremendous fete! they 'have made it'....anything beyond film (3) is cream on the cake...its a matter of perfecting their craft. ((and of course...all the stuff that goes with it LOL)) can you IMAGINE there are thousands who (for whatever reasons) do not even make through the front door! do not loose heart. we're SO immersed in the idea of bigger, biggest, best...as being better. sometimes less IS more.

If you can access Mayo and Kermode BBC Five Live radio show (12th Oct 2012) they had an interview with the actor Paul Bettany "A Beautiful Mind" "Da Vinci Code" and he was talking about how he has made a conscious decision to turn down work and concentrate on tiny movies that interest him even if this means he will not work for months at a time.
Gerard seems to need to be busy, if the industry is in trouble then all actors and behind the scenes personnel must be concerned about the quality of the work available.
