The story goes ... the commercial is based on the premise of twins who live apart but experience a strong connection ... each other's pain etc. Filmed about 2000?

More info www.ineedmyfix.com/2012/04/15/gerard-butler-then-and-now/Recently unearthed has been a Guinness commercial called “The Water Tower”. The content of the ad, although extremely well made and with high production values, is kind of a head scratcher. What the hell does all of this have to do with selling ale? What does it mean? EDIT – Apparently this is what it all means, according to PR Week: The 80-second ’water tower’ ad is based on the bond between twins. One male twin lives in Dublin while the other works on a farm in California. Although separated by thousands of miles, their emotions are very close. When the farm worker in the US hits his thumb with a hammer, his twin in Dublin feels the pain. When the Dublin twin drinks Guinness and experiences refreshment, his twin is engulfed in an exhilarating surge of water as a water tower collapses. Okay, did any of YOU get that from the ad? All of that is secondary, of course, to the fact that the ad stars one Gerard James Butler. No release date is given, but it is reportedly from 1997. While some who are more recent devotees of The Butler may not recognize him, for those of us who have long been under his spell, there’s no mistaking that walk. In the spot, he sports two looks (it’s unclear if one of his selves is fantasy or memory), one is a well-groomed version of his mop top of curls (variations of which can be seen in his earliest screen work, be it tv or film) and the other the shorn and butch look complete with WB t-shirt (a la Terry Sheridan from Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life or The Stranger from Dear Frankie- both of which were filmed 2002/2003 so go figure)

Oh I thought that was about some guy from the UK who gives up the city life and goes to
Australia to work in the outback but Guiness is part of his life regardless........either character could be flashbacking to that other life..........that makes more sense to me but hey I guess if Guiness has this in a PR item that is one rather convoluted premise
wonder if we can find that item from PR Weekly
the odd thing is that I don't think Gerry ever had his hair that short until he did Dear Frankie or Tomb Raider whichever came first but that is definitely young Gerry circa Lucy Sullivan Gets Married, One Last Kiss which is many years earlier
there is a scene where long hair city guy goes to the Barber and it looks like he is getting his hair cut
because they drink a lot of Guiness in Australia not so much in California and then they can use this commercial in both the UK and Oz and even the US I guess if people aren't sure where that farm is
that kind of water tower is very Aussie too

Yes, I was wondering some of the same things, Canadia, especially when his hair was that short. But if the commercial was done in the late 90ies it is possible that he had it short and we don't know about it, he wasn't covered back then the way he is now.... His hair grows back fast and it was pretty short in Fast Food and the Polaroid commercial, so I can see him having had it shaved for a short time to do the commercial.
There is a clue that the two guys are twins. At the beginning of the commercial is a photo of both together. But of course reading the premise was definitely helpful...lol
Gerry is very hot in both looks, the pretty city boy and the rugged farm boy... A double dose of hottie...yummie. He was gorgeous in his 20ies and still is...

Love this ad and the double dose of Gerry living two lives. WOOT!!
He does look extremely young and thin. I was pondering the short hair as well. Maybe he did cut it short earlier on but there aren't any pics of him with it that short. Maybe he hid for awhile.
Someone was smart putting him in that ad!
