Kneum...
Thanks so much. The festival is an incredible event for anyone who loves film. You need some stamina though, as it is a pretty hectic schedule and you can get "movied-out" after all those hours in the theater in a short space of time.
Canadia....here goes:
Confusing, isn't it?? Any film that is a gala/premium/separate purchase, will not be on your film package list. Those will be sold separately online or at the box office I think on Aug. 23.
If you buy the package of 10 films, say, and you choose films that conflict with a Gala or Premium, you can take the tickets that are in conflict to one of several ticket booths and TRY to exchange them for something else you would like to see if that film has available tickets. If not, you can try to sell them outside any of the theaters.
I don't think you can return for money back though. And scalping is a no-no, although you can sell them at face value. And I don't think you can cancel an entire package either. It's a crapshoot as far as getting your first choices. You really have to act fast and keep your fingers crossed that you get most if not all of the films you want.
Unless you really want to see 20 different films, I would not recommend buying extra packages. If you are planning to buy multiple tix for the same film, I think you can buy up to 4, so then you might want to buy a couple or more packages. Buying lots of packages is unlikely to help you get the films you want though. SPEED is the best hope. Honestly, we had about a 6 hour turnaround from when our list was delivered to us and when they were received at the box office.
To explain a little better, you are sent a packet on the first day tickets are being sold. It has a list of all the package films ONLY, with days and times they are showing. You check off first choices, and maybe even second choices if I remember right, and then you send it back as quickly as possible.
It is advisable to already know which films you would most like to see, so you can quickly check days and times and return the choices. Ideally, you want to express them back for same-day delivery. I think we got our packet late morning, and sent it back before noon. It arrived that same day-the FIRST day of sales, and we got what we asked for. SPEED IS KEY!!!
The Gala or Premium tix that go on sale separately are just like buying from TicketMaster or any other ticket sales outlet. Have your credit card ready, have the website open to the buying page so you can hit the "buy" button as soon as it opens, and fill in anything you can before the sale opens. I think they let you know the days and times of the special events a few days ahead so you will be aware of exactly what you can fit into your schedule. Those tickets are more expensive, but well worth it. And they sell out really fast, so you MUST be available to buy at the exact time the tickets go on sale.
I don't think I could handle the 50 pack at all....that is impossible to manage in 10 days. The logistics would be a NIGHTMARE!! Anything more than 3 films in a day is pretty much impossible to manage between the waiting times, late starts and distances between theaters.
I agree about the foreign films though, it's hard to see them unless you live in a major city. I was glad I got to see Volver and Wind That Shakes the Barley because they never got to a theater near me.
The waiting in line is a killer though, hours and hours of wasted time. Your feet get tired from standing and walking from one theater to another. But, the plus side is that you meet lots of nice people who all like to talk about the films they have seen. It's a lot of fun.

I HAVE A HEADACHE Good luck!!! I know, I'm feeling like this So to sum it up and to see if I understand it correctly: MGP and Coriolanus are special presentations so the tickets will be sold separately on the 23rd as it is with ticketmaster and I have to be online on the 23rd as soon as the tickets go on sale to have a chance? The 23rd is what.... a Tuesday? This is going to be tricky with work and all....

Gersarchitect-
Not quite right. It has not yet been determined if MGP and/or Coriolanus willl require a special purchase or if they will be part of the packages being offered.
That decision will be made after all the films are chosen and all decisions are made as to which films will be Premium red carpet events requiring additional piurchase and which will not. That info will be available on the TIFF Festival website Aug 23, according to very nice woman at the box office for the festival.
But I would check the website often just in case they reveal that info a couple of days in advance.
If there is a separate ticket for the film/s, that would require an additional purchase, at a higher fee, which would be available ONLY on the TIFF website or at their box office.
And yes, it is very confusing and very inconvenient. And the Gala and Special Presentation tickets do go very very fast, so you MUST be online as soon as the tix go up for purchase if you hope to get them. Oh the sacrifices we make for our dear Mr. Butler!!
Wishing you good luck in getting your tickets!!
PS: I am incredibly happy and very very PROUD that our sweet Mr Butler will have TWO films showing at the festival. I so wish I could be there.

Thank you so much for clarifying this, KTG. Jeesh, who would have thought that getting tickets for a film festival is more complicated than rocket science. I am glad we have a couple of you here who have been through it.... So who is not yet discouraged from going? So now I kind of hope that they will be sold separately. I sure don't want to purchase a package... Well, there's always the red carpet...

Oh my the things we learn and the places we get to visit and the people we meet because of Mr Butler! That alone makes this fandom worth while!
Anyway getting a ticket to the films sounds like a battle. I now appreciate Berlinale so much more LOL! But in any case I think just doing the red carpet or wait at the Press conference are the best bets to see Gerry so I wouldn't worry too much about getting a ticket.
And you get to meet all the fans and go for dinner and talk about our favourite person.
I'd love to go but still no idea if I will be able to make it because of work and family engagements. Can't wait to find out the dates!

Can't wait to find out the dates! Yes, I'm kind of in the same position... but being close enough to drive there (long drive though) makes it easier for me to make a last minute decision. Keep me posted though, Terez, would love to meet up if we both can make it.

Moved over from the newsbox, as others may have the same questions,
[×] [o] oldbutnotdead: MGP & Coriolanus are in special presentations at TIFF. Any knowledgeable person know what that means?
[×] [o] Canadia: A special presentation gets a premium screening in that they get the red carpet treatment but they are not on par with a gala that plays in 3 Aug 11, 15:04 [×] [o] Canadia: the largest venue, Roy Thomson Hall. A film that isn't a special presentation or a gala gets a regular screening. For example Coriolanus was just a
3 Aug 11, 15:02 [×] [o] Canadia: regularly screened movie at the Tapei Film Festival.
3 Aug 11, 15:03 [×] [o] oldbutnotdead: ok, thanks, Canadia, that helps!
3 Aug 11, 15:04 [×] [o] Canadia: The premium screening is only on the first showing though, many movies will get screened more than once but subsequent screenings will be just a regular screening
×] [o] Canadia: I'll move this to the TIFF thread momentarily but for example if one couldn't get tickets for the special presentation of MGP, you may still get tickets for one of the regular screenings, but
[×] [o] Canadia: there will be no red carpet the director might show up it does happen but more likely no one will show up to the regular screening so like going to a regular movie.
3 Aug 11, 15:08 [×] [o] Canadia: And if you live where I do where indy or arty films rarely this way cometh, TIFF might be your only opportunity to see a lot of the films.
well until they get out on DVD hopefully.........and the Galas are just a much bigger deal over all. I suspected MGP wouldn't get a gala slot just because of the lateness of its submission because my guess is the Gala slots were determined a while ago and they also have protocol they have to throw in some Canadian made movies for sure not all Hollywood fare and some foreign films and at 2 a night that's not a whole lot of slots open overall

If MGP and Coriolanus are held at Elgin while they are classed as red carpet events every one I went to at that venue in 08 the red carpet was inside with press and all stars ushered in. It is on a busy main road so if you did not have a ticket to screening you were very unlucky. People with no tix did queue up behind venue to try and catch him coming out. Alot of RnR cast attended and were introduced on stage. Things may have changed in 3 years. RnR was a Special Presentation but because it was shown on opening night the Visa Screening Packages only started from the Fri - like this year too. If any of his films are shown at Princess of Wales I'm not sure if they would come under the 9pm Visa Screening Packages or if they are soley for Elgin Theatre.
The schedule is released 23 Aug and single tix open to donors that day but we can't get til Sat 3 Sep at 7am.
I saw 4 Special Presentations last time and all had the stars/and or directors attend. I saw Michael Fassbender, Colin Firth, Jessica Biel, SlumDog people, RnR cast.
I know the RnR press conference ended up where the cast were staying but since nobody knew where they were staying til after nobody went to catch a glimpse. Most stars do stay at Four Seasons and Hyatt in Yorkville but the RnR cast along with some other celebs were at other end of town and people didn't know til after. I think where they stay may depend on studio. I understand a Ritz Carlton has opened since 08 so that may get used too. Are all the press conferences now happening at TIFF Lightbox or whatever it's called??
Just be prepared your only chance to see Gerry in flesh may be if you have tix to his premieres.
