OK what are we going to do? Misty said picnic... but I don't want to make this an organized event like GALS convention with speakers and such... we just are a laid back site and I'd rather we make our own fun and it doesn't necessarily need to be focused around Gerry and Scotland and such.. I'd rather get together and have good times with friends who happen to be fans and members of this site... I am open for suggestions.
Now Misty said picnic... fun, fun... but the problem with that is it can be a pot-luck normally but if we have people coming from out of town... well... how are we going to do that?
We have till next summer to sort this out soooo... lets do some suggestions...
Gerrysarchitect was telling me she used to be involved in something about Gerry so.. GA what is your suggestion. I am more of a go "do" person than an organizer. Someone volunteer to do some organizing and I will put the ball in motion.
PS I am not volunteering you GA but I would like your input.

There are plenty of metro parks and some of them have grills where we can throw some burgers and hot dogs and stuff onto the grill. I don't see it as being some huge structured thing, just a fun hang out for a few hours in a park and have fun and meet each other kinda thing is more what I had in mind...

Yep that would be awesome... the only thing is if someone is coming from out of state and usually picnics are potluck, there is going to have to be some kind of organization as far as feeding people... Like who is bringing what...

Yes, I was involved into organizing an event, but it was rather formal, like those gals or dotnet conventions. A group of Gerry fans got together including myself and we put on GerryFest 3 times in Indy. We had a charity we supported, an auction, the whole nine yard. We didn't have a speaker but we had a Celtic Rock band that I'm friends with. I was an organizer the first two times (2006, 2007), I just had too much going on the last time we did it (2008).
I suggest this to be much more informal, not a big deal. Depending on the time of year doing a BBQ in a park or if you don't want to wait until it's warm again doing something at somebodies house, like doing a DVD night of Gerry movies and just chat. I have done that in my early Gerry days, one girls suggested on dotnet that we'd all get together at her house in Cleveland and about 7 or so of us did. Now I have a pretty big place so if you don't mind the drive to Cincinnati we could do it there (and you can stay over night at my place, I have plenty of room) but since you're all up in the Toledo/Detroit area we probably should do it up there unless we have interest from other people further south.

OOh! lemme put on my thinking cap...one moment please seriously, this is going to be a BLAST! holding this event in michigan sounds right. for us folks who are out of towners there could be near-by camping, B&B's, hotels/motels available cheap-o with group rates. (personally....gimme a tarp on the lake anyday) a picnic sounds good. personally, i'd like to see a little more 'fan-fare' seeing how this site came from 'umble beginnings to shoot up skyrocking meteor-like....(Ah....yESSSS!) i say P-A-R-T-E-E--E-E-E catered, tent, music (DJ...or use girls stuff here live feed), have stations: 1) gerry 'as told by WOGB' in retrospect....(paper & digital) (2) member photo's and fav. of gerry.... stuff like this... we can also hold raffles and donate the $$ toward the wonderful charities on gerry's behalf....maybe we can secure something of gerry's as a 'give-away' for the collectors in the group??? i'm excited. loVe to meet y'all (finally)....do you think gerry would possibly even remotely shutter to think pop in for a short teeny weeny little visit...hee hee....

I'm going to put my head together with GA if she's willing and we can figure something out...
If we did a Celtic Band or something of the sort and catered little event at a park would anybody have a problem with pitching in a little money toward the event to pay for food and entertainment?
Please give me some feed back...
I'm thinking next summer...

these parks look fantastic. they probably have pavillions w/grills. personally, i like the one with a pool, skate park, golfing....and the rates for daily useage on both parks are extremely feasable. i'll look up to see if there's camping nearby and other overnights. FYI Dawne, the parks are connected so when you get into one, you get into both of them, unless they change it next year. Watch just because I'm going on about how awesome that is, they'll change it.

I'm not thinking fancy catering... fun in a park, fried chicken and fixings...Bring your own beer or wine.... WHOOOT!!! if people are able to bring a dish... salad or whatever great. When it gets closer I will look more into it... rent a covered structure... We can get an idea of how many people would be interested in attending.. It may be five, it may be 20 or more... we will wait and see, but this sounds like great fun!!!!!!

I am all for a small informal event at a park or somebody's house or at a small hotel, but with no speakers nor bands (that all costs A LOT of money and even my band friends will not do it for free). If it's a bigger event like we did in Indianapolis, count me out as an organizer. It is just too much work especially if you do it long distance. I have been there and done that.
But even at a smaller event we can support a charity with doing a small raffle or something like that.
Dianne, I do like the idea of Put In Bay. But we would have to do it VERY off season though. Otherwise the place is just way too expensive. It's a great place though.
