Is it also not possible that Gerry is not interested, he may have been approached on The Hobbit and just said no straight away, end of discussion? Might not be his cup of tea or not in his master plan, whatever that may be at this moment.

It's all possible, Canadia, but Gerry does like LOTR and even though he knew he had no chance auditioned for Viggo's role for the original LOTR trilogy. He said in an interview I think more than ones that he loves the LOTR books.... I think that's why some of us were speculating about it... and that was going on among LOTR fans too (have a friend who is one), so it wasn't that outrageous to consider that he may try to be in it.
But maybe Gerry is just too busy anyway.... any news on Consent to Kill? LOL

Now THIS is exciting news! Let's hope we hear something soon! EXCLUSIVE: Relavity Media is in talks with director Antoine Fuqua and Gerard Butler to come aboard Afterburn, an adaptation of the Red 5 Comic title by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood. The scifi saga takes place a year after a solar flare burns half the surface of a planet, and treasure hunters return to retrieve what's left of value. The script was written by Into the Blue scribe Matt Johnson, and I heard that they will bring aboard A Man Apart scribe Christian Gudegast to do a rewrite. The film is being produced by Neal Moritz, Tobey Maguire, Toby Jaffe and Jenno Topping. Fuqua is coming off Brooklyn's Finest, while Butler just wrapped the title role in the Marc Forster-directed Machine Gun Preacher. I think I might even like Gerry doing this project than the role of Mitch Rapp and maybe he can keep his Scottish accent. But darn, I don't know anything about the comic books but I am betting the character isn't Scottish LOL

That this director is the one directing Consent To Kill. It's possible they got the projects mixed up, but I'm thinking that maybe they met, wanted to work together but not on CTK. Who knows ... I just can't wait until we get SOME info!

www.joblo.com/index.php?id=34763For a while it seemed like Gerard Butler was everywhere, but we haven't seen him too much lately. Serving penance for THE BOUNTY HUNTER somewhere, maybe. Now he's getting back into action -- of the post-apocalyptic sort. Butler is in talks for Relativity's AFTERBURN, a comic adaptation being produced by former comic character Tobey Maguire and noisemaker Neal Moritz (XXX, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUSes). Antoine Fuqua, who's spent a decade trying to live up to TRAINING DAY and not quite getting there (SHOOTER, KING ARTHUR, yeesh), is attached to direct. Butler just finished MACHINE GUN PREACHER with director Marc Forster (QUANTUM OF SOLACE). The futuristic story is set some time after a massive solar flare has charred the planet, and treasure hunters take advantage of the situation to seek priceless artifacts like the Mona Lisa and Crown Jewels. The Red 5 Comics title was written by online community contributors Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood (TheForce.net and ComingSoon.net, respectively). A script was cranked out by Matt Johnson (TORQUE, INTO THE BLUE), but Deadline says Christian Gudegast (A MAN APART) will do a new draft. Thanks to Elenoire for finding this one for us!!!

www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=29486Gerard Butler Feels The Afterburn He'll scour a scorched Earth... Source: Deadline Gerard Butler Feels The Afterburn He’s most recently been seen paired with Jennifer Aniston in The Bounty Hunter and heard fighting giant reptiles in How to Train Your Dragon, but now Gerard Butler is getting back into full-on action mode, entering talks to join director Antoine Fuqua on comic book adaptation Afterburn. The title has been floating around Movie-Land for a couple of years now, with Tobey Maguire originally attached back when he was still King Comic Book with the Spider-Man films. Fast-forward a couple of years and Relativity Media is looking to hook Fuqua to make the film with Butler starring. Originally created by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood for Red 5 Comics, Afterburn sees half of the Earth’s surface devastated by a solar flare. The remaining chunk is rendered extremely dangerous thanks to radiation, which has mutated much of the animal life and any remaining humans. If he does sign, Butler would play one of a group of mercenaries who make their living jetting back to the planet to retrieve priceless artefacts such as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone, the Crown Jewels and Simon Cowell’s missing soul. Okay, maybe not the last one. The job is made more difficult by the mutant beasts and rival treasure seekers. Word of Butler's likely casting was first shoved into Twitter-land by Pajiba's reliable sources last month. Torque/Into the Blue writer Matt Johnson was the first person attached to bash out a draft, but now Deadline reports that A Man Apart’s Christian Gudegast is being tapped to rewrite. Glad to see they’re keeping with the tradition of people who’ve written dodgy thrillers, then. With luck, Afterburn could be something better – but first it has to achieve escape velocity from development’s gravitational grasp. James White Again thanks to Elenoire.

www.firstshowing.net/2010/11/15/director-antoine-fuqua-gerard-butler-feeling-the-afterburn/November 15, 2010 Source: Deadline by Ethan Anderton Afterburn Previously, we reported that Training Day director Antoine Fuqua was set to direct an adaptation of the 2005 Vince Flynn novel Consent to Kill. Later, we found out that Matthew Fox, Colin Farrell or Gerard Butler were in the running to lead the spy thriller. Though we haven't heard any recent developments on that project, it looks like Fuqua and Butler may end up working together on another project as Deadline reports the two are in talks to collaborate on an adaptation of Red 5 Comic's sci-fi comic book Afterburn. The story takes place a year after a solar flare burns half the surface of a planet, and treasure hunters return to retrieve what's left of value. For a little more explanation of the comic book's story, here's the official synopsis from Red 5 Comics: In the near future, a massive solar flare strikes the dayside of the Earth, utterly destroying the Eastern Hemisphere. Europe, Africa, Asia, India and Russia are turned into wastelands. What life remains becomes mutated from radiation and fallout. This is the backdrop for Red 5 Comics’ upcoming adventure series, AFTERBURN. Beneath the ash, death and tragedy, treasures both modern and ancient lay unclaimed. Enter Jake and his team of “recovery experts”. For the right price, they are willing to enter the quarantine zone to retrieve items for rich Western clients. The Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone, the Crown Jewels — no job is too big or small. Along the way, they must face rival treasure hunters, rogue armies, pirate gangs, and hostile mutants. But as the saying goes — amid chaos, there’s profit. Sounds like a pretty cool concept to me. Comic writer Scott Chitwood describes the series as, "Indiana Jones meets Mad Max, but instead of ancient artifacts in cob-webbed temples in traditional pulp adventure, we open up the first issue with Jake stealing the Mona Lisa from the ruins of the Louvre. That pretty much set the tone for the whole series.” Sadly, screenwriter Matt Johnson, the scribe behind Into the Blue and Torque is wrote the script, which leaves a lot to be desired. However, A Man Apart writer Christian Gudegast is supposed to do a rewrite. That's not that much better, but maybe we'll be surprised. Interested? Thanks Nedahl

www.thewrap.com/deal-central/column-post/gerard-butler-star-tobey-maguire-produced-afterburn-22546Gerard Butler to Star in Tobey Maguire-Produced 'Afterburn' By Jeff Sneider Published: November 15, 2010 @ 6:26 pm Print this page Email Share 0 Share 7 Gerard Butler is in negotiations to star in Relativity Media's adaptation of Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood's Red 5 comic "Afterburn," which Antoine Fuqua is in talks to direct, the company has confirmed to TheWrap. The sci-fi saga is set one year after a solar flare burns half of the Earth's surface and follows a group of treasure hunters who return to retrieve what's left. Matt Johnson ("Into the Blue") wrote the script, and Christian Gudegast ("A Man Apart") is expected to perform a rewrite. Maguire Entertainment's Tobey Maguire and Jenno Topping are producing the project with Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe of Original Film. Fuqua has managed to carve out quite a career for himself despite directing one great movie ("Training Day") that came out nearly 10 years ago. After a string of disappointments, including last year's melodramatic crime film "Brooklyn's Finest," I find it hard to have much faith in him as a filmmaker, but having said that, I do think "Afterburn" is an intriguing piece of material that represents a much-needed change-of-pace for Fuqua. I like the idea of him directing Butler in a post-apocalyptic setting, so here's hoping the film is a return to form for Fuqua. Butler recently wrapped Marc Forster's "Machine Gun Preacher," and he's set to star in Ralph Fiennes' "Coriolanus," a modern-day adaptation of the Shakespeare tragedy that will be set during the Iraq War. He also appears as a foul-mouthed leprechaun in the omnibus film "Untitled Comedy." Butler and Fuqua are represented by CAA and their involvement with "Afterburn" was first reported by Deadline. Thanks to Elenoire This entry was posted today Scottish actor Gerard Butler is set to take the starring role in forthcoming movie Afterburn. This will be the 41 year old’s second portrayal of a comic book character, and if the success of the epic 300 is anything to go by we should expect good things. With Butler all but confirmed and Training Day director Antoine Fuqua said to be interested in taking the helm, it looks as if Tobey Maguire might finally be able to get the ball rolling on the project he’s been keen to produce since 2008. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland of the near future where all life in the eastern hemisphere is hideously mutated by radiation after a solar flare strikes the earth. Butler will play recovery expert ‘Jake’, who’s mission is to recover artefacts such as the Mona Lisa from the quarantine zone. His character will battle with rival hunters, mutants and pirates in what sounds like an action movie with all the right elements for success. After his most recent roles in action romance The Bounty Hunter and voicing the character of Stoick in How to Train Your Dragon, Afterburn will see a welcome return to the kind of full throttle action movie Butler does best. And with ‘Spiderman’ himself Tobey Maguire working alongside, they should have enough comic book credentials between them to pull something pretty impressive out of the bag. Again Elenoire as well as the post after this one... Way to go girl!!! Gerard Butler and Antoine Fuqua pursued for Afterburn Posted by: Kristy Sturdivant Gerard Butler and Antoine Fuqua are in talks to team up for the sci-fi film AFTERBURN. AFTERBURN is based on a Red 5 comic about life after the sun flares up and wipes out half of the Earth. The survivors become treasure hunters who go around scavenging what’s left. The original script has been done by Matt Johnson but there may be a rewrite from Christian Gudegast. Producers include Neal Moritz, Tobey Maguire, Toby Jaffe and Jenno Topping. No word on when production will begin. I like comic movies so this is right up my alley. I expect that Gerard Butler will be back in his element since he will be doing another action film, especially since he really got his big break in a comic role (300). Maybe he’s beginning to realize he sucks at romantic comedies. Just because you’re good looking doesn’t mean you should do romcom, just a word of advice Mr. Butler.
