www.showbizspy.com/Gerard Butler's Soccer Slip-Up By Adam, September 19 2008 Scottish actor Gerard Butler is terrified of feeling the wrath of his British fans for referring to football as soccer. The star -- who can be seen in Guy Ritchie's new film RocknRolla -- is spending so much time in Hollywood that he's struggling to keep his Scottish perspective on life and sport -- even when he returns to the UK. He explains, "I was back home recently doing an interview talking about football but not American football - soccer. "I called it soccer then too. I was saying how I went to a soccer game and I literally felt my heart was going to burst. I just kept thinking how saying soccer is about the worst thing you could do when you go back home. "I thought it was as good as your career being over. I thought people would be thinking, 'Look at him. What a sell-out. F***ing Hollywood!'"

Awe Gerry, they are going to have to understand hon that when you live in the United States you call it soccer or it gets confused with American Football....It probably got to be a habit because of where you spend most of your time.....they need to understand. You didn't sell out!

Dianne dear ! As a European, i can PERFECTLY understand Gerard's reaction to this slip of the tongue.... Football doesn't equal soccer.Period. Our males here in Old Continent consinder football as one of the main comportments of male essense, therefore everything connected to it is of extreme importance..... Glad this slip of tongue didn't happen in a pub while commenting over a Rangers game...... Just had a mental picture of two dozen ferocious Scots glaring with bad intends at our poor Gerard... Not a picture you'd like to take with you in after lfe.... ;D PS This man is sooooo down to earth and his ardent willing and hot determination to stay connected to his Scottish roots just makes me admire him more.... Love ye Gerard!

Literally speaking, that is true, Dianne. Soccer AND football is one and the same kind of sport ga me . What i meant though, is that you can't say "soccer" in Europe, especially when you're European - that's a complete disaster ! Everyone should think you have been "colonised' by US or that you consinder yourself an American rather than European. For people with such high national pride and so connected with their heritage as the Scots, this would be a serious mistake..... ;D I can understand Gerard's terror.....! He would have worried of what his old friends might think of him !!! If you want to have a clear picture of what football means for most European men, then try "Fever Pitch" with Colin Firth. That's a classic football movie..... Practically footbal fans NEVER grow up.....

That's a classic football movie..... Practically footbal fans NEVER grow up..... Oh Boy...I get it now. I should rent that movie....I must say, Football fans are passionate about the sport more pssionate than any other sport that's for sure. And I understand Gerry's horror... In Gerry's defense and I know I really don't have to defend him because all you girls know it was an accident....he was likely a little nervous and those things happen....But here in the USA Soccer isn't very big BUT all the kids are playing it and on leagues and every year it gets bigger....it is a fun game....But if Gerry is in New York and tells a friend I have tickets to a football game it would be no doubt in anyones mind here that he is talking about the New York Giants which is American Pro Football...it would not even be fathomed of that he would be talking about soccer. Its a must for any displaced European living here to call it soccer to avoid being misunderstood. I guess the world does see us (Americans) as cookie cut out people we tend to forget our roots. Europeans probably shy away from being Americanised and hate to admit that they are blending in. HA! I found this....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utsHE5xWges

I saw David Perkerham...hehehe on Ellen a while back and he looked like he wanted to be sick when he said "soccer" instead of "football". At first he was like football this football that. And Ellen is like, you mean soccer. After that he made a "taking a shit" face everytime he said soccer.
;D ;D
I dispise Soccer. I loveeeee football. I can watch those tight ends every night. Granted I am not really looking at the scoreboard. Just the twitches. ;D

I hardly ever call it soccer, I almost always call it football and I hate American football. When I'm talking about American football that's what I say, but when I'm talking about soccer I either say football or proper football lol. I guess it's from all that time I spent in the UK

Whatever. I call it whatever it is in the place I'm at. What's the big deal? People are so complicated. It's soccer in America and Football in Europe. Go with it. Whatever. And when you get to heaven I doubt saying it one way or the other will be what prevents you from getting in. LMAO
