Sadly his experience with MGP and Coriolanus seems to have put him off work like this, a true tragedy. Would love to see more of this/ the Jury type stuff. He's capable of so much. If I have one criticism of Alan, it's that he seems to have steered the career in the Hollywood success direction and not this type of thing. The success would have come had he had the chance to hone his craft and proved what he could do more.

MGP failed due to poor marketing and Coriolanus was Shakespeare after all so was never going to be seen by the masses. I would have thought that Gerry was at a stage in his career now to be able to still pick a few less commercial projects in between (like Mr Clooney) and as long has he doesn't invest in them too much personally it doesn't matter so much if they aren't huge at the box office. At least he got good critical reviews for both MGP and Coriolanus. I personally have very high hopes for OMAM so maybe that will be the critical and financial success he needs to let him still do smaller projects.

If you're in the HW mill for long enough, you must lose confidence in your instincts, everyone telling you what will work. It's odd Gerry sometimes seems so full of confidence and yet at other times too conscious of HW. They do push the culture of fear at people so hard. Everybody's dispensible.

The sad thing is by trying to ride the crest of a wave you sometimes date yourself and give yourself a fixed shelf-life. Going your own way is risky but gives you longevity. What I meant about Alan was that he went for a simple route with Gerry, he went for a 'hunk' image and seems keen to have him compete with younger men, that will date him and give him a fixed period of time. If he had played a wider range of rolls, not being afraid of age etc or looks,he would have more longevity and not be pidgeon-holed. Gerry often complains about not being offered the right roles. To some extent his people are to blame for that, they profit in the short term, his loss in the long.
