John Legend, Bon Jovi to perform at CNN Heroes tribute

(CNN) -- Grammy Award winner John Legend will perform at this year's "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute," airing Thanksgiving night on the global networks of CNN.

Legend will perform "Wake Up Everybody," featuring hip-hop artist Common and Canadian R&B singer Melanie Fiona.

Joining the list of stars participating in the show are presenters Halle Berry, Demi Moore, Jessica Alba, Kid Rock, LL Cool J, Renee Zellweger, Gerard Butler, Kiefer Sutherland, Marisa Tomei and Aaron Eckhart, CNN has announced.

Rock legends Bon Jovi also will be part of a two-hour celebrity-studded tribute to the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2010.

The supergroup will perform "What Do You Got?" a new song from their greatest hits album which debuted November 9.

Country music duo Sugarland will perform "Stand Up," a new song from their album "The Incredible Machine," which debuted October 19.

Anderson Cooper will host the fourth annual show from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. The program, spotlighting everyday people who are changing the world, airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT on November 25.

More than 10,000 nominations for CNN Heroes were received from more than 100 countries.

The top 10 CNN Heroes are selected by a blue-ribbon panel of judges, including Muhammad Ali, Richard Branson, cellist Yo Yo Ma, Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, rapper Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and actor Rainn Wilson.

Judges also include Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, singer Ricky Martin, actresses Holly Robinson Peete and Patricia Heaton, supermodel Alek Wek, actor and author Hill Harper, and entrepreneur Ela Bhatt.

The top 10 CNN Heroes were announced on CNN.com on September 23, when public voting began to select the CNN Hero of the Year at CNNHeroes.com. The CNN Hero of the Year will be revealed at the tribute show.

Each of the top 10 CNN Heroes receives $25,000, and the CNN Hero of the Year receives an additional $100,000. The 2009 CNN Hero of the Year was Efren Peñaflorida, who started a "pushcart classroom" in the Philippines to bring education to poor children as an alternative to gang membership.

"CNN Heroes has illustrated the best of humanity through the telling of stories of selfless acts of kindness, courage and perseverance" said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide. "We are honored to bring these Heroes the recognition they so deserve. It is a program the entire CNN family is proud of and excited to share with our viewers on Thanksgiving night."

Also attending this year's show will be the Chilean miners who were trapped for 69 days before being freed last month. Organizers said they invited the miners and five of their rescuers because they symbolize the resilience and endurance of the human spirit.

"The heroic efforts of the rescue of these miners was one of the most unifying and inspirational events of the year," Walton said.

Since the inaugural CNN Heroes tribute broadcast in 2007, performers and celebrities who have participated include Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close, Cameron Diaz, Meg Ryan, Forest Whitaker, Salma Hayek, Lucy Liu, Terrence Howard, Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale.

Previous tribute shows have included performances by Legend and fellow Grammy Award-winning artists Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood and Alicia Keys.

Award-winning producer/director Joel Gallen returns to serve as executive producer of "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute." Among his credits, Gallen produced telethon events supporting victims of the Haiti earthquake, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina. He won an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for "America: A Tribute to Heroes."

Is there any way us Brits can see CNN on the internet?!!!!!!

Well the live stream is apparently available to people outside the US. I live in Canada and I was getting the stream earlier today as I was testing to see if it worked for me.

CNN said they were live streaming the red carpet tonight at 6:00 pm but then they changed the schedule and took it off. They must have had technical issues and other people were able to watch a live stream of the red carpet around 8:00 pm but after a while the live player was not downloading if you hadn't already done so, probably due to volume. this included Tinkerbell who lives in Holland and was able to capture the short piece where Gerry does the red carpet but the camera was far away.

They are going to live stream both the red carpet and the show on Thursday November 25 2010 so I expect you can watch it and being live streamed people can record and get that posted up on internet pretty quickly as well.

So I would suggest going to the live.cnn.com site before the red carpet starts and make sure you have the live player downloaded to beat the crowd

Woman fighting sex slavery named CNN Hero of the Year

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- A woman whose group has rescued more than 12,000 women and girls from sex slavery has been named the 2010 CNN Hero of the Year.

Anuradha Koirala was chosen by the public in an online poll that ran for eight weeks on CNN.com. CNN's Anderson Cooper revealed the result at the conclusion of the fourth-annual "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute."

"Human trafficking is a crime, a heinous crime, a shame to humanity," Koirala said earlier in the evening after being introduced as one of the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2010. "I ask everyone to join me to create a society free of trafficking. We need to do this for all our daughters."

Koirala was introduced by actress Demi Moore, who along with her husband, Ashton Kutcher, created DNA, The Demi and Ashton Foundation, which aims to eliminate child sex slavery worldwide.

"Every day this woman confronts the worst of what humanity has to offer," Moore said of Koirala. "She says, 'Stop. Stop selling our girls.' By raiding brothels and patrolling the India-Nepal border, she saves girls from being sold into the sex trade, where they are being repeatedly raped for profit, tortured and enslaved.

"Since 1993, she has helped rescue more than 12,000 women and girls. Through her organization Maiti Nepal, she has provided more than a shelter for these girls and young women, she has created a home. It is a place for them to heal, go to school, learn a skill, and for some who are infected with HIV/AIDS, it is the place where they can spend their days surrounded by love."

Koirala will receive $100,000 to continue her work with Maiti Nepal, in addition to the $25,000 awarded to each of the top 10 Heroes honored Saturday night.

"This is another responsibility to me to work with all your support," Koirala said to the audience after being named Hero of the Year. "We have to end this heinous crime. Please join hands with me to end this crime.

"Please try to respect the youth. They are the ones who are going to build the next generation. Thank you so much."

Koirala's speech capped the gala event, which was taped before an audience of nearly 5,000 and premieres Thanksgiving night on the global networks of CNN.

The show opened with a salute to the 33 Chilean miners and five of the people who rescued them last month after the miners spent 69 days underground.

"For 69 days we were amazed by these 33 brave miners," Cooper said in welcoming the miners onto the Shrine stage. "Their ordeal was unthinkable; their rescue, unbelievable. No one has ever been trapped underground so deep for so long and survived.

"They endured a nightmare, experienced a miracle, and in the end became each others' brothers and heroes. On behalf of CNN Heroes, we salute all 33 Chilean miners."

After the miners sang the Chilean national anthem, two of them -- speaking through a translator and holding the Chilean flag -- expressed their appreciation.

"We want to thank the world, and we want to thank God for your prayers," Luis Urzua told the audience in Spanish.

"Our families suffered. Our children suffered, too. But thanks to the prayers of the whole world, we could come out of this difficulty," Mario Sepulveda added.

"Some of our rescuers are here with us tonight," Urzua said. "Thank you for bringing us home. You are our heroes."

Butler gives charity founder award

Hollywood actor Gerard Butler has presented an award to the founder of a Scottish charity for his work
feeding hungry children.
Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow flew to LA to pick up the prize of £16,000 for the charity Mary's Meals which
he founded in 1992.
The former salmon-farmer from Argyll shared the stage with the Paisley-born PS I Love You actor at a
ceremony in Hollywood on Saturday.
Mr MacFarlane-Barrow was the only British nominee selected for the CNN Hollywood Heroes show, an
award scheme which recognises "ordinary people having an extraordinary impact".
Butler said: "I'm proud because he's a fellow Scot. Every day Magnus lets children know that they matter,
that someone thousands of miles away cares about them."
Butler described the founding of Mary's Meals, which happened when Magnus and his brother Fergus made a
plan to deliver aid to Bosnia while having a drink at their local pub.
He said: "Whenever a story starts like this: 'two brothers walk into a bar', it doesn't end well but this story is
different.
"Magnus Macfarlane-Barrow walked into a bar with his brother. They were having a drink and talked about
the heart-wrenching images of the Bosnian war they'd just seen on the TV. So they made an extraordinary
decision that most of us don't make. They decided to help."
Mary's Meals provides a school meal a day for almost 460,000 children in 16 countries. The prize money
will be spent on school-feeding projects in Malawi, where the charity supports more than 12% of primary
school children.
Mr Macfarlane-Barrow said: "It's wonderful to be able to receive this award on behalf of the thousands of
people who are working to realise the vision we have that every child in the world will be able to receive at at least one meal every day in a place of education."
