Well as I have probably said this before, I know of a guy who does tour security for rock bands and hey married or single most rockers are not being faithful to their women on tour, unless the wife or girlfriend come on tour, too, otherwise they have hot women chasing them and willing to do anything and they get to the point where they need more than the ordinary to excite or turn them on and it is really hard to retire from touring and settle down with the wife if you got one or find some girl and settle down. It is like that saying how do you get them back on the farm once they have seen Paris. The other irony is the guy who does tour security is about as bad as the rockers he works for. He's been divorced a few time, he keeps saying he is going to retire and set up a business and next thing you know he's signed up for another tour. I will never forget that one drummer on Celebrity Rehab the sex addict season and he said you get used having women throwing themselves at you and meeting your every need and then some. Part of him really wanted a normal one on one relationship but was finding it hard because he kept slipping up and cheating on his girlfriends. He was actually a very nice guy deep down and he had more issues that Dr. Drew had to draw out and deal with than just the rocker lifestyle. There were other issues that were keeping him from true intimacy, one had to do with the death of his mother as I recall.
Some people, men and women, just have wanderlust and often that lasts a whole lifetime. Some get tired of it and can make a transition but many never can so either you don't have long term relationships or I guess perhaps the other possibility is you have a partner who has the same wanderlust and you wander the world together LOL seeking adventure etc.
Thinking you want something and making it happen are two different things. I think Gerry often says what he thinks his mother and his fans want to hear.
I do think that being in the producing part of the business and with all that has gone down with MGP, LAC was no picnic either with Frank Darabont pulling out at a crucial point, that this is taking away his fun factor and one could have predicted this. Producing movies always has and always will be a big headache unless maybe you are Steven Speilberg. He probably wishes he could go back to just making films without having the other worries. I hope his next few films are ones he is not producing AT ALL so he can just focus on the movie.
Ironically he has seems happiest in the process of filming movies, even MGP despite the heaviness of the subject matter. Many actors, in relationships or not do find that time in between films is tough. Gerry has mentioned he seems a little lost. At least if one had a stable relationship there would be some continuity whether filming or not. But many actors feel lost in that time between films or at least until they are sure what the next project is so they can focus on that. Show biz is fickle and people succeed and fail on critieria other than hard work or talent which is very frustrating to those that do work hard and have talent. As Joan Rivers said she really never wanted Melissa to go into show business because it is about constant rejection and she said I am 75 and I am still being rejected every day and being hurt by it. You have to love the performing that much to put up with all the exterior crap.
If you don' love it or you find yourself losing your passion then it may be time to switch gears.
