Actually LongTimeLurker the irony is that Jay become famous because a photographer caught Jay doing a spectacular wipeout on Mavericks in 1994, 1995 which became a cover of THE surfing magazine of the time perhaps still and Jay in fact died in a diving accident on holiday in Maldives on his birthday I believe. They say that Jay broke the cardinal rule of diving and surfing I would imagine always at least be in a pair, he went diving alone and his friends found him drowned when he did not show up for lunch or dinner that day. The Wipeout www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKb72wcvF1wSee. I'm not trying to be disagreeable or flippant, and have no desire to start an argument, but I THINK that he went in with "eyes wide shut," wanting the best for the movie. The man G is portraying (Frosty, his mentor) has been RIGHT THERE, and has first hand knowledge and experience with this story and surf. I doubt anyone held back about what could and has happened out there. I'm NOT absolving EVERY-/ANYONE involved in this, but G has his own piece of humble pie he needs to swallow, too. I am VERY relieved that no one was seriously injured (including the people who went out with him) or worse, and I know the first reaction is to "momma bear" him, but he has a wonderful , actual momma bear in place right now, so he'll get that in spades, I'm sure. But, he's said himself that he wants/needs someone to "kick my ass" sometimes, so he's damn lucky I'm a million miles away or I'd be putting on my thickest, hardest boots for the job about his OWN willingness participate in this shot. To all, a Merry Christmas (if you celebrtate it) and a Happy New Year (hope you make it)!!

"I've said it before, heaven help the special lady that gets to nurse him back to health, and kiss his boo boos when he stumbles. It's apparently apart of his hard-wiring, and he's probably going to be doing stuff like this to some capacity (emotionally, if not physically) as long as he's allowed to while gracing God's green earth. She's gonna be lucky bitch. A TIRED, but lucky one..." With wonderful ladies like you around me, I'm sure I will able to cope!

Something tells me, it may have been GB himself that insisted being out there with the people there to watch over him, of course. I hope he gets back on that board and goes back... IMHO, I *suspect* he went in with a false sense of security (since he was surrounded by the same pros who eventually "plucked him out"), but ULTIMATELY of his own accord. Even "the pros" are still just crew members on a movie set, there to advise, instruct, and assist. If talent and director want and do something, they only have so much control over the situation. He's doing a movie on how someone DIED on said surf. I'm sure he has been brow-beaten with tales about Mavericks and other precarious surfing situations from surfers, citizens, and professionals alike. Which is why someone pointed out that he "knew the potential" for danger after this incident. He has proven to be and freely admitted that he can be obsessive and a risk-taker. Do-er, THEN thinker. So, I'm sure there was a DEEP and LENGTHY discussion with who and ALL that would be involved, and he went in bravely, if not intelligently, and this time proved to be more than he could handle. Hopefully he was humbled more than he was hurt. I've said it before, heaven help the special lady that gets to nurse him back to health, and kiss his boo boos when he stumbles. It's apparently apart of his hard-wiring, and he's probably going to be doing stuff like this to some capacity (emotionally, if not physically) as long as he's allowed to while gracing God's green earth. She's gonna be lucky bitch. A TIRED, but lucky one... I agree, Gerry always says he's a deep thinker and I bet this shook him to the core. I'd say there are a lot of emotions playing into how he feels right now, and I bet he's glad for this Christmas break.

Not only is he shook up and facing his mortality, I wonder if he's thinking about things he wants to do in life more than ever.
I am glad he is heading home so his mom and any other lucky ladies can give him some big hugs and TLC. Wish we could do it but that would only stress him out more.
That twitter abouth NY is off makes me think he thought he'd have time to hang out there a few days before heading home. I would guess he wants to avoid the paps and media right now since this news went viral. I even heard about it on my morning radio show today. WOW.
Please Gerry get some rest and no more surfing unless it's on small waves for fun.

Oh LongTime Lurker I don't disagree with you that Gerry probably wanted to go out there and/or the pros he's been working with and hanging out with thought he could handle it - when you look at the paddling shots and when I was watching the waves on the surfcam I didn't think it was that bad. At the time I didn't know if Gerry would have been with those surfers but I didn't see much surfing mostly surfers sitting on their boards and the swell was moving slowly, it looked almost fun if it wasn't so cold, whereas in Santa Cruz the swells were moving very fast, one right after another, though the swell at Mavericks was then breaking with that signature tubed looka as the swell moved along, but the surfers were sitting back of that, I am not even sure now that was the film crew, might have been other surfers [one of the pros mentioned they were staying away from the crowd? inside the bowl whatever that mean] but there was hardly anyone actually surfing so I thought it must be filming........but the surfcam may not give an accurate picture either, even in terms of perspective. But when you see the rocks and the waves in the footage used in the TV report, yikes. But that is closer to shore I believe.
I was just clarifying that Jay did not die from surfing.

I think what they call "the bowl" is an area of calmer water protected by rocks, cliffs or whatever. And for some reason some higher rogue waves came across that protective barrier. It sounds to me it was just one of those freak things that can happen but nobody really expects it to happen. It's kind of like other accidents on movie sets like when Gerry got shot in the face on MGP. They take all the precautions (at least I hope so) and yet stuff still can go wrong. I think the pro surfers thought it was within reason to go in the water that day from all the articles I read. I wouldn't be too harsh on them or Gerry. Accidents unfortunately do happen and sometimes it is hard to find somebody to blame. I hope they learn from this and err on the side of caution the next time.

Wow, almost had a heart attack reading this - haven't been on in a while...still devastating to hear how dangerous this was, and what could have happened. It only takes one time - he was very lucky. Although he's an adrenaline junkie, this may put him in check for a while, at least. Nothing is worth risking your life, let along a movie role. Can't even bear to think of the what ifs.
Super relieved he's okay.

I was just clarifying that Jay did not die from surfing. I didn't think you were contradicting me in the least, Canadia. In fact, you sort of reiterated what I was trying to say. If anything, I may have confused others with my (too) short-handed synopsis, and accidentally indicated the wrong account of Jay's death. Thanks for the clarification.
