Just catching up with the news ... I agree that if I was Maggie I think I'd be tempted to slap that boy around a bit . Relieved that he seems to be ok. Reading comments at gbutler.ru/news/volna-mavericks/#more-24040 .... wonder if that red board is Gerry's and he is the middle surfer in the second shot? The Russian site always does a great job at catching elusive pictures don't they?

He had that 100-yard stare that surfers get after a two-wave hold or near death experience. After almost 20 years at Mavericks I've seen a lot of it, but at least he was standing on his own two legs. He was then carted away in the waiting ambulance and raced off to Stanford Medical Center for observation.
Speaking with Wormhoudt on the dock he said they were all sitting on the inside bowl when a large outside set came through, swung way to the south, caught them off guard and mowed them all down. For Mel, Long and Wormhoudt it's all in a day's work. That's why they're on the crew, but for Butler, he had no business near the bowl or taking a Maverick's set on the head. According to other eyewitnesses he was held down for a solid two-waves and took four or five more waves on the head. He was then washed through the rocks on the inside before he was finally able to be plucked out.
Although tragedy was avoided, beginners, no matter what tax bracket you're in or whom you roll with, should take note that Maverick's on any day at any size has the potential to send you to the bottom. Butler was brought to the hospital for observation, but a complete recovery is expected. That said, he may seriously consider renegotiating his contract and adding a stunt double. He'll come out of it no worse for the where, but will have one hell of a story to share at the Golden Globes.
I'm relieved and ecstatic that he is OK but he does take a whole lot of chances and I hope this puts just a little bit of fear in him. I'd like him to think about using more stunt doubles. I hope mother Maggie gives him a good talking to. I would never want to sic someones mother on them but in this case I believe it is warranted. I agree Dianne! His Mother needs to (and probably will) have a nice little conversation with Gerry about how he had no business being out on waves like that! I'm very glad he's okay, he is very fortunate and blessed...and better not scare us like that again! That said, I would love to be his nurse.

Well, forget to get any decent news from E! They are only interested in d-list and teenage stars....
Nothing on Access Hollyweird and probably nothing on Extra. They are more interested in the Kardashians and B. Spears... Bleh.

LOL I do wonder if Gerry's story just broke to late in the afternoon to make these evening shows. I guess we will know tomorrow.

I'm just glad Gerry's ok, especially it being so close to Christmas & him working in such dangerous surf.
When the rocks were mentioned, all I could think of was a reality show here in Australia called "Bondi Rescue" and some of the injuries people have experienced from crashing into rocks. It wasn't pretty and our surf wasn't half as bad as the Maverick waves.

I am so glad Gerry is o.k. I saw this yesterday right after it happened, but did not have all the details and how serious this was. Now I am just sick over this...I am so thankful that it was not his time to go yet and I hope and pray that we have him for a long time. I can't explain it, but I just love him so much as I think we all do. He is just so special.

He brings so much happiness to so many people However that being said: I would have loved to be the medic on that call. I am just sitting here thinking of the complete patient assessment that must be done I would be the one who would not survive the ordeal. My mind would be everywhere but where it should be

I hate knowing he might be injured. My brother died this summer while he was climbing in the mountain. He was very experienced and he did just the one stupid mistake. But t simple stupid mistakes always caused the most dangerous things. Thanks God Gerry is fine.

from SD surfimages.com/blog/2011/12/20/gerard-butler-almost-drowns-at-mavericks/GERARD BUTLER ALMOST DROWNS AT MAVERICKS[/size] Where are the stunt doubles when you need them? Today Scottish actor Gerard Butler (playing Rick “Frosty” Hesson) was filming for the Hollywood movie titled “Of Men and Mavericks” at the surfing spot Mavericks in Half Moon Bay, California (best known for it’s large surf). The movie is based on the life of legendary waterman Jay Moriarty. Gerard was on the inside floating on his surfboard when a freak set came out the back and caught everyone off guard and in doing so Gerard was taken down for a two wave hold down and then was immediately rushed to the hospital by an ambulance. What does a two wave hold down mean? A two wave hold down in the surfing world is considered one of the worst scenarios a surfer could find himself in. What this means is when a surfer falls on a wave he is riding or in Gerard’s case when you are paddling back out a wave hits you and takes you underneath the surface for however long. The bigger the wave the longer you will be held down for. A wave (the first one) takes you down for so long where another wave will come pass over you while you’re still under the water from the previous wave. This is why it’s called a two wave hold down, because two waves have passed over you since you have been underneath the ocean water. It is very hard to believe that Gerard did actually have a two wave hold down and not drown as most professional surfers could rarely survive this type of scenario yet alone an amature. Welcome to Mavericks

Filmmakers were working on a shot of Butler paddling out at the famed big-wave spot with surfers Greg Long, Zach Wormhoudt and Peter Mel on the inside of the break. They were steering clear of a set waves in the 15-foot range when a much larger set loomed and broke in front of the four of them, said Wormhoudt, a Santa Cruz resident. Butler, 42, was held underwater for two waves and washed through the inside rocks while tethered to his surfboard - a big-wave gun about 10 feet long, Wormhoudt said. A safety patrolman on a Jet Ski swooped in and picked up Butler, who was shaken up but not seriously injured, Wormhoudt said. An ambulance arrived and transported Butler to Stanford Medical Center for observation, and Butler was later released. Wormhoudt, who has been surfing Mavericks for about 20 years, said it was a memorable hold down for him, as well. "It was probably the biggest set of the day," Wormhoudt said. "It was intense for myself and I've been through a lot out there." The story was first reported by ESPN.com on Monday. Butler, the star of "300" and not an experienced surfer, plays a lead role in "Of Men and Mavericks" as Pleasure Point surfer Frosty Hesson. Moriarity was a Santa Cruz surfer who burst on the Mavericks big-wave scene at age 16 and died in 2001 in a free-diving accident the day before he was to turn 23. The film, due out in fall 2012, covers his life in Santa Cruz, his apprenticeship with Hesson and his committed performances at Mavericks. The film was shot in Santa Cruz in October and in recent weeks around Pleasure Point. Frank Quirarte, a photographer who watched Butler at Mavericks on Sunday, wrote on ESPN.com Monday that the day reminded him of last January, when Orange County' Jacob Trette nearly drowned at Mavericks. "Even on small days, the inside at Mavericks can push 10-feet-plus and really tear you up," Quirarte wrote. Butler had not surfed much prior to the movie, but he made a big effort to improve his surfing and water skills for the movie, Wormhoudt said. Wormhoudt said they took a "conservative line" while paddling out Sunday and talked about what to do if they got mowed down by big waves. Butler wasn't trying to show off, Wormhoudt said. "Everything he was doing was within reason," he said. "We took like four to five pretty big waves on the head. Basically there's nothing you can do."

More from Mavericks Surf Shop www.facebook.com/MavericksSurf(in response to someone posting the espn article) Mavericks Surf Shop Thanks for sharing. As reported, he was on the inside with the crew, away from the crowd and the big waves at the peak. The "four or five" waves he took were inside the lagoon. It's a rough go for someone with no experience. He's a trooper.

So sorry to hear about your brother. And Gerry, I try not to sound like one of these mothering fans but... Gerry be careful. I can't even imagine the tons of wailing women if something were to happen to him. I would be one of them. All you ladies, this board and him have become such an important facet of my life...Kind of like my extended family.
