I found this interview posted on the newsbox, it is with actress Leven Rambin who played Kim, and it contained some some real news on the switch of directors and how it affected the movie: Question: "It was reported that director Michael Apted came in for Curtis Hanson. I know that's very unusual for any film. Can you talk about that process, and how that altered the dynamic on the set?
Leven Rambin: We were all going in one direction, and then all of the sudden, it was different. It was not typical. It was a hard transition, because we were all so in love with what we were already doing. Michael Apted is a super-gracious guy, and he did his research to try and understand what we were all experiencing. I think the movie had it's spotty points, but Michael did the best he could with it."[/size] Question: That was towards the end of the shoot, correct? Leven Rambin: Yeah. I can't imagine how difficult that was for him to come in at the end and then edit the whole thing, having not been there before. She also has nice things to say about Gerry, here is the link www.movieweb.com/news/exclusive-leven-rambin-talks-chasing-mavericks-blu-rayMakes me sad that Mr. Hanson didn't get to direct the movie. shellie

Like many of you, I recently received the CM and PFK dvd's from Amazon. The other night I watched PFK--was tired and knew if nothing else, it would be non-stop GB in all his splendor. Enjoyed the movie and will again. Last night I watched CM. To me, a far better film. This movie is fantastic on so many levels (of course, my favorite "level" is Gerry's portrayal of Frosty). It's a crime the critics and distribution discouraged the public from seeing the film in theaters. I'm one of the lucky ones who was able to see it a number of times on the big screen.
Mavericks and the surfing shots are still quite breath-taking, even on regular DVD; even though not as thrilling as on the big screen where you felt you were a part of it. Breath-taking is also a good (and not uncommon) description of Gerry in this movie. And I'm not just talking about the wet-suits, although he does look gorgeous. I love those moments when emotion plays across his face and through his eyes and your heart just about breaks (also not uncommon with this fine actor) and you better understand the man, Frosty--his spirit, his tragedy. Chasing Mavericks will certainly get a lot of viewing at my house.
One of the extras on the dvd, Surfer Zen, showed, among other thing, footage of Gerry's accident I've never seen--from the first awareness of the wave to Gerry being rescued. There that awesome man is, moments after narrowly escaping with his life, sitting on the jet-ski after being pulled from the abyss: "Did you get that on film?"
A side benefit of following Gerry is learning the flip side of the "nasty Hollywood film business." The passion of the filmmakers, the storytellers. We see it in the Gerry's interviews; sometimes there are documentaries like the well-loved WOG; other times it's the director's commentaries like the one on the CM dvd. It gives a picture of how a movie comes together and, in particular, how you incorporate the essence of a true story even though you may use poetic license, fiddle with timelines, etc. And in this film how you deal with the vagaries of surf and weather and unexpected calamities like the loss of the original director.

I love CM. I think it was a very nice film. I watched it with others, non-G fans, and they liked the film very much and thought GB was wonderful. They really got it, they got G as well. They even watched PFK with me and they liked that film as well and really liked G. Converted fans now. They said they did not understand why either movie got bad reviews as they would have gone to see both of them without a problem if I had asked them to go with me. So much for critics. They missed on their reviews and panned a truly good performance by G. I thinks media sucks bigtime.

Saw CM on DVD earlier today and i can tell you it was worth waiting months for. The surf scenes were amazing and Gerry emotional performance was great as always. I really felt apart of the movie and literally bit my nails when Jay ( Jason went under ). The scene were Frosty talked about being trapped under the Waves were more power full , considering now that i know that he almost drowned. I still can't believe the negative reviews. I think it's the best surfer movie i have ever seen. I don't understand how they can call it unrealistic or lacks energy. Damn philistines.

So I finally got a chance to watch this last night. I don't see why everyone hated it! It was a good movie, great story, and Gerry was fabulous as always....and I'm not into the surfer movie thing.
Haters gotta hate, I guess.
