Mavericks already creating interest.... New investors tap into SenatorGerman producer-distrib Senator Entertainment appears headed for a change of ownership. Dutch investment group Sapinda Holding, run by German investor Lars Windhorst, has obtained an option to acquire 21.2% of the company by Dec. 20. Sapinda's option includes the approximately 17% held by Senator chief exec Helge Sasse, while more than 50% is publicly traded on the German stock exchange, with the rest split up among individual shareholders or shareholding companies. Sapinda has described the move as a "normal investment without any strategic intention" and said it should not be seen as a signal that the company was expanding into the media sector. Senator enjoyed a major hit this year with the release of "The King's Speech," the Oscar-winning film that grossed $15.5 million in Germany, but it fared worse with David O. Russell's "The Fighter," which tanked at the German box office. The Berlin-based group managed to improve its financial base last year, narrowing its net loss from $9.3 million in 2009 to some $700,000, while revenue dropped 5% to $33 million. The company's upcoming releases include Steven Silver's "The Bang Bang Club," starring Ryan Phillippe; John Wells' "The Company Men," with Ben Affleck; and Derek Cianfrance's "Blue Valentine," starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. Senator just picked up a slew of titles in Cannes, among them Mike Newell's "Great Expectations," an adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic starring Jeremy Irvine, Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes; Tanya Wexler's romantic comedy "Hysteria," starring Hugh Dancy and Maggie Gyllenhaal; and Curtis Hanson's "Mavericks," with Gerard Butler.Further acquisitions included Christophe Honore's Cannes closer "Beloved," and Gallic laffer "Intouchables" (Untouchable). www.variety.com/article/VR1118037364

Good find. Of course September could mean September 30th. Interesting article about the fact a man and his ex wife are competing for control over this year's Maverick contest. Jeff Clark is one of the founders and he says things started going wrong when a group including his ex wife took over, including an incident last year where several people were injured by a rogue wave at the contest which then resulted in loss of a major sponsor. www.sfexaminer.com/local/bay-area/2011/06/maverick-s-contest-awash-drama-founder-operators-wrestle-controlLooks like the Harbour Commission will decide who gets the permit for the event if anyone so hopefully the contest will go on but apparently the waves dictates when the contest takes place, wild if you ask me.

Okay first of all I think misread Frosty's age, I found an article and it is apparent Frosty was in his mid forties when he mentored Jay. And taking a look at a recent photo I don;t think he has gained as much weight as I thought he is just a big burly guy and he is still riding these mega waves so he is not out of shape either, the whole family surfs and his second wife is or was a competitive surfer. Thanks to a tip at JJ here is a photo of Frosty when he was around 47, 48 and Jay was around 16, apparently Jay was 13 - 14 when he started bugging Frosty to show him how to navigate the Mavericks. I will post the article in the next thread.

www.deadline.com/2011/08/surfs-up-for-jonny-weston-who-lands-lead-in-mavericks/Surf's Up For Jonny Weston, Who Lands Lead In 'Mavericks' EXCLUSIVE: While Gerard Butler was announced as the big name in the Curtis Hanson-directed surf movie Mavericks, the lead role all the young actors chased is Jay Moriarty, the teenage big wave rider who successfully rode Mavericks. That is a body of water in Northern California that became popular with daredevil surfers who braved the structure and rocks to ride waves the size of five-story buildings. Twenty-two year-old Jonny Weston has been offered and is in negotiations for the lead role of Moriarty in the Walden Media-backed film. Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper wrote the script and Hooper is producing with Jim Meenaghan. Butler plays Rick "Frosty" Hesson, the mentor who trained Moriarty to ride the Mavericks when the surfer was just 16. Though Moriarity survived those impossible waves, he died at 22 in a diving accident. But he remains an inspiration to surfers, who coined the phrase "Live like Jay." Weston's is currently shooting Cherry, starring alongside James Franco and Dev Patel in the Stephen Elliot-directed indie drama. He's an accomplished surfer, which helped his cause. Weston's repped by ICM, 3 Arts and Jeff Gill. www.imdb.com/name/nm4103976/

as long as Jonny can act, I'm good. I'd rather have a good actor than a great surfer in that role. He is a cutie.

geektyrant.com/news/2011/8/12/jonny-weston-surfs-his-way-to-the-lead-for-mavericks.htmlIn February, we reported that Gerard Butler was cast as the lead in the Curtis Hanson-directed surf movie Mavericks, the film about "Jay Moriarty, the teenage big wave rider who successfully rode Mavericks. That is a body of water in Northern California that became popular with daredevil surfers who braved the structure and rocks to ride waves the size of five-story buildings." Deadline reports that Twenty-two year-old Jonny Weston has been offered the coveted role and is currently in talks for the Walden Media film. This sounds like a great role for Weston to ride onto the Hollywood scene with. The story sounds pretty cool and inspirational. What are your thoughts on this news?

Comparing Gerry to a donut...he taunts us with his sweetness, I bet he's delicious in the mouth, and after you've had one taste you always want more. Yeah, makes sense. Good one Dianne.
