Gerard Butler: 'Dynamo' Star!


Gerard Butler has just signed on to star in the upcoming film Dynamo, based on the novel Dynamo: Defending The Honour Of Kiev.

The 42-year-old actor will take on the role of Nikolai Trusevich, the all-star goalie who leads his team and inspires the entire battered city of Kiev, Ukraine.

The film is based on “the landmark soccer game that took place between an occupied Ukrainian soccer team and their Nazi captors during World War II. To stem a rising tide of resistance and establish Aryan superiority, the Nazi’s set up a match pitting the starving Ukrainians against a ‘super team’ of German players that to this day is still known as ‘The Death Match’.”

KIEV, Ukraine -- It's a game that every Ukrainian knows about: The "Death Match" of 1942, when top Kiev soccer players trounced a team of Nazi occupiers and reportedly paid for it with their lives.

But Ukrainian authorities on Tuesday froze the release of a movie depicting that Soviet defiance of Nazi Germany because of concerns it could ignite explosive emotions just weeks before Ukraine co-hosts the 2012 European Championship.

Officials fear that "The Match," which extolls the heroism of Ukrainian soccer players but portrays many Kiev residents as Nazi collaborators, would teach Ukrainian audiences the wrong image of their country and history.

Some experts also fear that it may stoke hostility toward German players and fans as Ukraine hosts several games played by Germany's national team.

The movie tells the story of the Aug. 9, 1942, match, which pitted a Wehrmacht team against players from Kiev's top club Dynamo and other athletes. The Ukrainian team won 5-3 despite reported warnings from the SS that the Ukrainians must lose to their occupiers. Most team members were soon arrested.

"Some things are worth dying for," the actor playing team captain Nikolai Ranevich says in the film, his eyes filling with tears, as he convinces his team to beat the Nazis in a show of resistance and patriotism.

A Soviet journalist dubbed the game the "Death Match" and Soviet authorities long cultivated the legend that the entire team was executed by the Nazis soon afterward. A monument to those players now stands outside the Dynamo stadium.

Historians say that while defeating the Nazi team was undoubtedly courageous, there is no evidence to suggest all of the players were executed in revenge.

Nine of the players were arrested about a week after the match. One soon died in custody and three others were shot in a Kiev concentration camp some six months later, according to Volodymyr Prystaiko, a former Soviet security officer who wrote a book on the match.

German investigators concluded in 2005 there was no evidence linking the death of the three players to the match.

The film's distributor wanted "The Match" to premiere in Ukraine on May 3 and the state cinema agency was to announce its decision on whether to approve the movie last week. But agency spokeswoman Larisa Titarenko said Tuesday the regulator will take another 25 working days to analyze the movie.

Yaroslav Pidhora-Gvyazdovskiy, a member of the expert commission reviewing "The Match," says he recommended banning the movie because it promotes ethnic strife. Most of the characters who collaborate with the Nazis speak Ukrainian while the admirable characters in it speak Russian and fearlessly oppose the invaders, he said.

Independent movie critic Volodymyr Voitenko said the movie should be banned.

"It's ideological propaganda, which is part of Russia's neo-imperialist policy," Voitenko said. "It's a political question and the state must decide whether to allow being spat in the face or not."

Movie producer Dmitry Kulikov accused Ukrainian movie officials of bowing to pressure from "radical nationalist groups."

"There is nothing anti-Ukrainian about this movie," Kulikov said by telephone from Moscow. "We made a movie about the heroic deed of Ukrainians and Kiev residents during the war."

Gerard Butler has been set to star in Dynamo, a true story based on the novel Dynamo: Defending The Honour Of Kiev by Andy Dougan. Eli Richbourg adapted the screenplay. Riviera Pictures, Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo., and Jeremy Garelick will produce. Pathé co-developed and will co-produce and distribute the film worldwide. Talks with possible directors are underway.

This is a tough subject to do well worthy of G's ability &talent. I'm happy for him. I wonder where they will film? I have an old boyfriend from Ukraine & learned some Ukrainian -- its been a while. I look forward to this. This will be the 2nd time he plays a soccer goalie both real life roles. Way to go G.

Pathe also distributed Dear Frankie. I hope that's a good sign about the quality of the movie. The game took place in Kiev so wonder if they will shoot there? I was there a few times as a teen. I remember it being a beautiful city with a big river, the Dnieper...

This is exactly the kind of story that Gerry can put his heart and soul into. Sounds controversial since The Ukraine wanted to block the movie...so he will love that too!!

Hopefully he won't get too thin...knowing Gerry he will probably get as thin as possible...

It sounds to me like the film the Ukraine wanted to block was a different movie about the same event as I understand the article. I remember that the European championship was held in Poland and the Ukraine last summer. It sounds like there was a movie that was supposed to be released right before or during the games. That article is from April 10.

But if The Ukraine has those kind of concerns as mentioned in the article I am not sure they allow them to shoot in Kiev. I guess we'll see, it probably depends on the script and how the Ukrainean soccer players are depicted.

"Made"... Definitely about another movie, probably a Russian one.

But totally I can see why Gerry was attracted to this. I hope he won't starve himself too much.

Pathè distributed also The Queen, Slumdog Millionaire, The Duchess, and many others films, and is based in UK. So I think this will be an european movie. Probably they will shoot in Kiev, but there are many others countries in Eastern Europe which often are the perfect set for TV and cinema, they often choose Prague. Or maybe they will choose another location, because if they will shoot the movie in winter that locations are very cold

Really looking forward to this football movie... "sorry can't say soccer..." i'm a huge football fan of the game. Go watch a game weekly... i love foolball movies and all aspects of it. So it'll be real interresting to see it... but it does sounds a bit like that Stalone movie... i really hope Gerry can adjust his scottish accent " sexy as it is"

This movie does sound like it's right up Gerry's alley..esp the hero part and message of the movie. I have not doubt he'd be spectacular in this role.

It bums me out he picks these type of projects that seem to pretty much not have an audience. Since CM is staring me in the face with such low numbers, Dynamo sounds like a repeat of CM.

My local theater is only showing CM at two times a day this weekend. I will go see it again. I know it will be gone after next week. I think the marketing was wrong again. I hope Europe gets this movie and Aussie and all countries so you can all enjoy it. It's a lovely film and he looks hot and sexy in it. It's hard to watch him be quiet in this role since we know how much he talks.

In Norway the fotball culture is very important to us. To bad Playing for Keeps is not going to shown here so far. I think it would have done great here and and WWII movies also a popular here , so i hope this when Dynamo is done , i really hope that it'll be shown here.
