But wait. Nu Image/Millennium's "Olympus Has Fallen" was actually first, with screenwriters Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt selling their script to Millennium in early March with Gerard Butler already attached to star and produce. With Sony's "White House Down" gaining steam, Nu Image/Millennium wants first blood, fast-tracking 'Olympus' and, according to THR, offering the director's chair to Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day"). Fuqua's last film, 2009's "Brooklyn's Finest," was for Nu Image/Millennium, and 'Olympus' could finally bring him back behind the camera after an extended break now that the director's schedule is free (after the "24" movie bit the dust and Fuqua dropped out of the Arnold Schwarzenegger-Sylvester Stallone vehicle "The Tomb"). 'Olympus' will be the third attempt for Fuqua to work with Butler. Previously, the director and actor were supposed to team for the sci-fi action film "Afterburn" (but that went nowhere), as well as the thriller "Hunter Killer," which was reportedly set to start shooting this winter, before it disappeared off the face of the Earth. In February, OnLocationsVacations reported that "Hunter Killer" might shoot in Alaska, but there's been little word since. Coincidentally, that film would have seen Butler play a submarine captain who must save a Russian president, while "Olympus Has Fallen" will see Butler play an ex-secret service agent who must protect the U.S. President from an attack at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Yippee ki yay, Gerard!Should Fuqua's deal get finalized, Nu Image/Millennium is targeting "Olympus" for a June production start, months before the recently hired Roland Emmerich can start rolling on "White House Down."

from the newsbox. elenoire ! www.filmjunk.com/2012/04/11/antoine-fuqua-and-roland-emmerich-to-direct-competing-die-hard-at-the-white-house-projects/" Antoine Fuqua and Roland Emmerich to Direct Competing “Die Hard at the White House” Projects Die Hard is back with a vengeance… and we’re not just talking about Die Hard 5. For some reason, there are suddenly a handful of Hollywood projects in development right now that are all being modeled on the familiar Die Hard formula (ie. good guy trapped in a building taken over by terrorists). What’s more, two of these upcoming movies are both set at the White House. Last week Deadline reported that Roland Emmerich had signed on to direct White House Down for Sony (a title clearly playing on Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down), based on a $3 million spec script written by James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man). Now this week Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) is in talks to direct Olympus Has Fallen, a similar project for Nu Image/Millennium. Which one will hit theatres first? According to THR, Olympus was actually the first to get picked up, but it wasn’t really in active development until Sony announced their competing project. Now it’s getting fast-tracked with a projected June start date. It already has a potential star in Gerard Butler, who was attached as of last month to play the Secret Service agent tasked with single-handedly saving the President. The script was written by first-time scribes Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt. Plot details for White House Down are not yet clear, but it seems a safe bet that they are pretty damn similar. If they’re smart, they’ll rewrite White House Down to feature the President himself as the hero a la Air Force One (which, itself, topped off a whole decade’s worth of Die Hard clones). Either way, it’s yet another pair of competing Hollywood projects to add to an already well-established list. Are you excited about the return of the Die Hard formula? Which of these two competing projects are you most interested in? "

www.ksla.com/story/18006151/gerard-butler-to-return-to-hollywood-south-for-new-millenium-studios-project#.T6BM1imriws.twitterGerard Butler to return to Hollywood South for new Millennium Studios project SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Millennium Films has confirmed their next major project will be an action thriller set in the White House, and bring Gerard Butler back to Hollywood South for his next movie. Gerard Butler is already signed on for the lead role in "Olympus Has Fallen," which will bring the "300" star back to the area for a second time since filming the romantic comedy "Playing The Field" with Jessica Biel, currently in post-production and due out in December. Now he'll play an ex-Secret Service agent fighting to defend the Capitol building from terrorists. Millennium Films president Diego Martinez on Tuesday confirmed the project is in pre-production now and filming is expected to begin in July and continue through August. "It's a very big project. The tag line I've seen is 'Die Hard in the White House,' is what they're calling it," so it should be very very exciting." Martinez says it will be the biggest project Millennium ("The Expendables," "Righteous Kill") has done in Louisiana to date, and that they are in the process of signing yet another big name to portray the president in the movie. Olympus is set for release in 2014. The studio, owned by parent company Nu Image, opened just over year ago in the Ledbetter Heights on the edge of downtown Shreveport. The 70,000 square-foot, $10 million project covers 6.7 acres, featuring two sound stages, over 14,000 square feet of office space Studio Operations. The property also houses Worldwide FX, which has done work on "Conan the Barbarian," "Trespass," "The Expendables" and "The Mechanic." Millennium is currently in the process of acquiring more land to make room for a 20,000 square foot prop house, specialty sets and wardrobe. They're also hoping to create more office and parking space for trucks and vendors. This doesn't seem long enough to finish an action movie. I wonder if they shoot parts of it in Washington DC. I mean with that storyline it would make sense. They probably limit the DC time as much as possible since it is probably super expensive to shoot there.

I agree GA they must have to do some of the filming in DC and it can't be easy to get permission to film around the White House just for security reasons, you probably have to be highly organized and hit a time when the President is out of town. They must be confident Louisiana isn't going to pull a Michigan.

I have a feeling most of the Shreveport shoot will be in the Millenium studios. All the White House interiors and inside the other governmental buildings has got to be sets since they can't film in the real deal. Plus they may blow it up. Shreveport probably can double for DC suburbs but not much else. But who knows, maybe some of the story takes place outside the city....

www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/roland-emmerich-white-house-down-james-vanderbilt-321657Roland Emmerich's White House Down will roll out in theaters on Nov. 1, 2013 -- the date previously held by the director's sci-fi epic Singularity, which was halted in pre-production last year. White House was acquired by Sony based on a script by James Vanderbilt, who also penned this summer's The Amazing Spider-Man and Total Recall. Mythology Entertainment is producing. The movie revolves around a paramilitary takeover of the White House. Emmerich and Sony are in the process of casting. White House Down will open opposite Ender's Game, based on the bestselling young adult book series. There is a rival project, however. Gerard Butler is set to star in White House Taken for Nu Image/Millennium Films (it was previously titled Olympus Has Fallen). Butler will play a former Secret Service agent called back to duty when terrorists overtake the White House.
Millennium will be shopping White House Taken at the upcoming Cannes film market. It doesn't have a domestic distribution deal yet. .

Oh, this does not sound good, not worried about the title change although it is VERY generic one but I can understand with "Olympus"being in the title it can sound like a Greek mythology film. But it is very concerning that they do not have a domestic distributor and they are going to shop for one at Cannes. That is Not good news. I hate to even think this, but Gerry could be in trouble getting this film made. This film could be a risky proposition for a distributor because it is well known that Emmerich's action flicks have been Block-busters at the BO. I sure hope as Executive Producer Gerry won't lose on this film like he did on MGP and I hope it gets made and a distributor that will give it a wide release. Crossing my fingers that the movie sells at Cannes. shellie Edited to note: I just had a thought about the title change to White House Taken and it was appropriate since Sony did take the story concept from Gerry's film, hire Emmerich & then hire and paid writers 3 million to come up with a script.
Maybe in the end this won't be the final title but for now just a jab at Sony that this White House movie storyline was taken! I'm probably off base but I like that idea This article even mentions that may need lawyers due to the similarity of the titles.. blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/roland-emmerichs-white-house-down-gets-inaugurated-with-a-november-1-2013-release-date-20120508#

I think it might be dangerous to have two similar movies with two similar titles though, I thought Olympus has Fallen was classier sounding. Let's put it this way, Fuqua better have his out first but Mr. Emmerich is as noted very successful and very experienced producer/director so he's going to be hard to beat if he is determined to win this race. I wouldn't worry so much that they don't have domestic distribution yet because they just cast their star and Emmerich again because of his trackrecord he probably has a good working relationship with Sony and damn Sony are good people to as your distributor.
ETA following shellie2's ETA, if they are taunting Emmerich/Sony almost saying go ahead sue us if in fact Sony stole the idea from Millenium then they can countersue or the tactic could be used by one side to delay the film's opening?

Thanks Shellie blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/roland-emmerichs-white-house-down-gets-inaugurated-with-a-november-1-2013-release-date-20120508#Roland Emmerich's 'White House Down' Gets Inaugurated With A November 1, 2013 Release Date; 'Singularity' Moved Back News by Kevin Jagernauth | May 8, 2012 6:20 PM 2 Comments So which White House-set thriller do you want to see? Roland Emmerich's "White House Down" or the Gerard Butler starring "White House Taken" (that's right, they changed it from "Olympus Has Fallen")? Well, with both movies racing into production it looks like this year's Snow White showdown is next year's Oval Office battle. Anyway, while it still has yet to lock down the cast, Sony is getting into the ring stamping Emmerich's "White House Down" with a November 1, 2013 release date, pitting it against Summit's franchise hopeful "Ender's Game." So why is Sony all hot and bothered to get this going? Well, for one, they paid a staggering $3 million for the script by James Vanderbilt ("Zodiac," "The Amazing Spider-Man") that is said to be a cross between "Die Hard" and "Air Force One" (boner jams!) about a paramilitary takeover of the White House (probably by terrorists is our guess). Now, it should be noted this was the date previously held by Emmerich's sci-fi "Singularity" which was put on hold to work out script issues. And so considering not only the price, but also how much of a no-brainer it is, "White House Down" will come first, the studio assuring fans that "Singularity" is still in the pipeline. While Sony has a date, Millenium Entertainment's movie doesn't have distribution though they hope to leave Cannes with some territories sold and a deal locked up. Anyway, this pissing match should be interesting to watch particularly now that the two movies have similar titles. Get your lawyers ready.... [THR]

ETA following shellie2's ETA, if they are taunting Emmerich/Sony almost saying go ahead sue us if in fact Sony stole the idea from Millenium then they can countersue or the tactic could be used by one side to delay the film's opening? it can be a strange and baffling thing when a script and/or title bounces around the circuit and two grab at it. in music - each artist will put the work out there in their own rendtion...somewhat like the 1960's battle over 'wooden ships' between CSN&Y and jefferson airplane. ultimately, the audience voted (ie purchased) crobsy, stills, nash & young verson..which became american iconic sound for the late 60's. but, i think there are more 'legal' ramifications re: copyrights etc concerning film as oppossed to music then vs. now is quite more stringent and legalized to the umpteenth degree. its ridiculous. all in all, the studio producers are going to have to duke it out re : the film title esp. if they're released same time...if there's a spread in distribution its as simple as changing a syllable or punctuation LOL. meanwhile, whats the chat about g's dating at large functions at the met?? hmmmmm. he didn't have a formal date? it seems gerry hasn't really had a 'date' in a long, long time... whether its a formal function or casual event. not really sure why. perhaps he is: 1) very private (2) non-commital (3) has a deep committment but doesn't want to publiciy share (4) maybe he didn't ask in time? LOL (5) i can't imagine any red blooded female who'd turn him down EVEN at the last minute ((smooches))

White House Taken, I like that better. Lets hope Gerry has the better movie... Shellie I like you take on things. What do you think of this? What I personally think is that it is going to take a lot of guts by any studio/director/distributor to go up against another studio doing the exact same project. And in this case it could be harder against one with Sony/Emmerich. We know Sony is going to play hard ball and the only way I see Gerry's project being viable is if it is shot as a low budget thriller and I'm not sure that is possible. And this news today on the Director Antoine Fuqu is disconcerting - a new project was announced although no start date was indicated but it also doesn't list White House Taken as one of his present projects.- www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=33918Feels like smoking mirrors are in play with all of these new movie announcements and we have to wait for the fog to clear to find out which ones are legit.
