I think having the news box is a great idea in theory, but practical application is a bit different and, obviously, difficult. If you have an open box for anyone to post in it, you can't really complain when outside people come in and post. People who don't join this site don't care about the rules and aren't going to follow them no matter how nicely you ask. It's just the way it is, and if you keep the news box open to the public there won't be anything you CAN do about it. If you made it so ONLY Mods/Admins could post the news in there, that would alleviate the problem. But I know, Dianne, you don't want to put such stringent rules on WO. However, you can't have one without the other. Yes, it's absolutely annoying to have to sift through pages and pages of crap to get to the links and news, and of course Canadia's and GA's awesome commentary, but that's the nature of the beast. People aren't going to join because you ask them to; they're not going to stop posting because you ask them to or say snarky things to them. Honestly, being mean to them just fuels their fire and probably causes them to tell others, "hey go over to WO and let's see how pissed off we can get them!". I LOVE how open this site is; always have. But you can't have it both ways, ladies. Not everyone out there gives a crap about the rules or being respectful. Having the News Box open for the public to post in is leaving yourselves open to anyone saying anything they want, and Mods saying "don't forget the chat box" to THOSE people is like talking to the wall. And honestly, do we want them to join if they're only going to put Gerry down? This is a FAN site, and those haters should just stick to JJ and IMDB. Why extend the invite? Anyway, that's my two cents for whatever it's worth, probably not much. This is just how I see it. I have appreciated the News Box being mostly news the past few weeks; today has been the first day in a while that this has happened so really it shouldn't be this big of a deal. JMHO.

i'd have to agree. here's a couple of points to consider: the black cbox is difficult to monitor and control 100% honestly, perhaps b/c there have been many conversations and 'news' not linked to gerry but of general interest and relating. this could be one reason its hard for people to gage what conversations to remark and what not? if it is kept 'strictly' as gerry happenings without any other links it would be black and white. easier to define. but it may become too restrictive, stodgey, boring and uncreative. so, whats happening may end up continually being a bone of contention for the board to deal with. for this reason the new box moderators are so very needed to gently nudge everybody.... personally, it is very fair for this board (dianne & staff) to request members and guests to keep the chat to a minimum on the black news cbox and to bring other conversations to the blue chat box to be fully enjoyed. very fair. having the black cbox kept MOSTLY for gerry news, events, happenings and such was a super idea which truly does serve as a snapshot of current events. the ladies who report also add so much more interest and in the know comments. its never dull. always intriguing. sometimes hilarious. and isn't THAT really what WOGB is all about? there IS freedom here...so, i'm surprised what 'anon' was alluding to. 'anon' certainly has plenty of room here to make whatever remarks they so choose...but, this person should also keep the non-gerry happening chit-chat where it appropriately belongs (as we all should attempt to) as has been requested over and over again...and rather politely i might add...otherwise, it would appear that 'anon' really doesn't give two *%#@ for anything other than their own viewpoint...narcisism does have its place (taken from 'one' who knows) LOL

It's a known fact that you can't please everyone all the time...I think that Mimsie and Eleanor are both doing a good job with their monitoring, as well as the other monitors on board. It's hard not to get caught up in the moment in the News Box, and difficult not to elaborate when posting. I, myself, am guilty of getting "carried away" with a post, and not "remembering" where I am and that I need to be in the blue chat box instead. Generally, someone will call me on it, and I'll hen move to the blue chat box for my "conversations." Everyone got used to having just the one box, and since we have the two now, tend to forget.
I can see the validity of the chat box being for members only, in order to keep so many trolls and outsiders from gaining access to some of the information that our members are able to find and post, some of it needs to remain private - at least not accessible to the entire Internet. But I can't help but think that some of the trolls are regularly "joining" WO in order to gain access to the blue chat box, so whether or not that is accomplishing that aspect is questionable at best.
The moderators are doing their jobs, what they are supposed to do, and doing it very well. Anyone who gets upset over them doing their jobs or those who become argumentative over it, are apparently those who can't deal with authority or play by the rules as they are set up.
As to an answer to all this...what is the answer? The only thing I can conceive is possibly going back to the old way, combining the boxes, and just having the one box, to write any and all things that you want to in. But then, everyone would have to be required to join WO, become members, in order to have full access to all information posted. I don't know that that would be a logical answer either, as it would make the site vulnerable to any and all trolls/those who don't need to be here, and those who could possibly cause more trouble than WO needs in the process.
It's a Catch-22 situation...one which there are answers to if everyone would play by the rules, and one which there is really no answer to, in order to appease everybody. I don't think that the moderators should come up against any serious criticism, though, as they are just doing the job that they were given to do. They have stayed within their boundaries and limitations and are doing the best they can with what they have to work with and deal with.
All of us are entitled to have our "voice" heard. Everyone has an opinion, and this is a democratic society we live in, where everyone can speak their mind. But giving an opinion, and out and out arguing over it, to the point of hurting feelings or causing problems between the members and staff, is just beyond the pale wrong and not necessary. Name calling should never happen, and getting angry to the point of causing upset or hurt feelings should never happen either. We are here to discuss Gerry, his career and all the good things that surround him, and to have fun doing it. The WO newsbox is the BEST source of information on Gerry out there...as Dianne, and GA, and Canadia, and others are so quick to find articles, pictures, updated information that some of the other sites are much later in getting. Everyone, for the most part, gets along well, and in general, it's the best fan site I have been a part of in the six years I have been a fan of Gerry's. I generally can't wait to get into WO in the mornings, I just want it to stay the best fan site out there.
I know that there will be those who will not agree with anything I have said above, and that's okay...we do live in a free society, and everyone's opinions are welcome, even if we don't always agree with them. I just wanted to express my opinions of what is happening now with the two boxes, good or bad.
Thanks for listening (or reading)....

The black box should be for the news; I don't have time to sift through a bunch of chatter to get to the latest Gerry happenings, and I sometimes will miss things. Maybe we could start a thread where people could discuss the news items in the black box and post a link to the thread in the header above the news box. That way people can discuss the news to their hearts content without causing the news items to be lost to chatter. That is my two cents worth.
This board is fun and we try to keep it that way; we accept other's opinions, but this is no place for trolls. Please respect other members and guests on this board and you will get the same in return.
And if you don't like Gerry, then why are you here in the first place?

I agree with you Lep and we are going to be more dilligent on encouraging members to begin posting in the threads again. The chat boxes are a blessing and a curse. Kind of like men, can't live with them. Can't live without them.

I love the black box because I get new news on Gerry and I appreciate all the hard working women who bring us these tidbits. Kudos to all of you!! As for men, don't get me started on that subject ... and they say women have mood changes ... is there such a thing as male PMS? 'Cause I can no longer keep up with his. (Btw, I'm not referring to Gerry, but another man I am attracted to.)
