Latest photos from the set of Coriolanus 30ninjas.com/blog/ralph-fiennes-coriolanus-blog-photos-from-the-setHopefully the next update will have a photo of Gerry too. This flim is going to be premiered at the Belgrade Film Festival which is in January 2011. I am assuming this will be its first showing. Though if they wanted to get the film in for Oscar consideration in 2011 it would have to be screened before Xmas. Sometimes they will screen a movie on like a couple of screens just to qualify, if Ralph is feeling stoked about the final cut and then do the real wide release later. Wow! This looks very interesting indeed. I knew it would be a modern adaptation, but this is not at all what you might expect when you hear the word Shakespeare...Can't wait to see Gerry in army fatigues again....

And latest news on Coriolanus english.blic.rs/Culture-Showbiz/6261/Ralph-Fiennes-in-ParliamentInteresting, I was wrong they apparently did film over the Easter holidays because those buildings were going to be empty over the holidays, Easter is a big deal in that area of the world but then taking a two day break, Ralph giving the crew a break to make up for working all over the holiday weekend, so probably explains why they may not need Gerry until later this week From the article Gerard Butler is expected to join the crew shortly, as the Scottish actor plays the part of Tullus Aufidius, the general of the Volscian army and the sworn enemy of Coriolanus, played by Ralph Fiennes himself.

I am pleased with the level of attention Coriolanus seems to be sustaining two new articles today of interest, the first we have seen the photos already First Images From Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus It seems Kenneth Branagh isn’t the only thespian in the world enarmoured with Will Shakespeare. Ralph Fiennes is transporting the Bard’s play, Coriolanus, into a 1990s Serbia. Can we rename the film, The Bard Locker? Okay, that was terrible. This is one of the few Shakespeare plays I’ve never read, so I’m intrigued to see what this will be all about. Knowing Shakespeare’s other works, it’ll no doubt feature murder, revenge, great dialogue and tragedy. It’s not the only re-imagining of Shakespeare on the block either – Julie Taymor’s Tempest adaptation was finished last year and currently stuck without a distributor since Miramax went kaput. No doubt, it’ll be showing at Cannes and will find somebody to sell it to. Coriolanus is Fiennes directorial debut and he’s nabbed The Hurt Locker’s cinematographer – Barry Ackroyd – to shoot it. Gladiator screenwriter John Logan has bashed out the script. Co-starring is Vanessa Redgrave and Gerard Butler. Two stills have emerged from 30Ninjas.com. So if you fancy a war movie with anachronistic ye olde English dialogue, Coriolanus will probably do it for you. Ralph Fiennes described his movie as: “Coriolanus, to some extent, asks what the role of a soldier is, not just in battle, but also in life. Shakespeare challenges the audience to resist his complex central figure, but against our reason, we often find ourselves siding with him.” www.filmshaft.com/first-images-from-ralph-fiennes-coriolanus/Shakespeare in Serbia: Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus 30 Ninjas has the first pics from Ralph Fiennes’ self-directed adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy Coriolanus. The film, which is to star Fiennes as the brilliant general and Gerard Butler as his arch-enemy Tullus Aufidius, locates the action in contemporary Serbia. We have to say, this seems like a bit of a brilliant idea. The tragedy contains some pretty chewy, thought-provoking ideas about the nature of the good soldier and the problems inherent in democracy, specifically the way a political figure can manipulate a population by appealing to their fears and prejudices. It’s also flippin’ ideal casting for Fiennes: Coriolanus is one of Shakespeare’s most complicated and least sympathetic tragic heroes (umm, sorry Ralph). He has little interest in democracy or the plebian populace, and unassailable self-belief. Nonetheless, as the story progresses, his refusal to PR his decisions and play politics – when contrasted with the oily demagogues around him – begin to redeem him. Many of the play’s themes have a lot of resonance with current political hot topics, particularly its demagogic politicians (we can’t help but think of Nick Griffin and the BNP’s shady methods of garnering support). It seems like a neat way to enter into a political debate without getting into a lot of preachy, finger-pointy polemic. www.indiemoviesonline.com/news/shakespeare-in-serbia-ralph-fiennes-coriolanus-80410Here is another screenrant.com/details-set-photos-ralph-fiennes-coriolanus-mikee-52950/

I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures of G on set for this movie. I am still sad that the film will not feature our Gerry in period dress. I would love to see him half dressed in nothing but a little skirt.

I will find the link in a bit but a translated news piece which is not altogether clear is suggesting that Vanessa Redgrave and Gerry are expected in Belgrade next week to start filming and that there is going to be a press conference when they both arrive. There were those rumours that Gerry was already in Serbia last weekend which they clarified but that was just someone making an assumption based on reports that he was due in mid April. Next week is mid April. The article also seems to suggest either Gerry or Vanessa or both are only around for one week of filming, I could see that with Vanessa. All her shots are interior shots in likely one building. However Gerry's character is going to be combat scenes and different locations so I have to imagine he's got more than one week of filming - being an indy film this will not be a long shoot since they can't afford it but they've been filming for about 3 weeks now and they estimated 6 - 8 weeks in total so I was guess Gerry would be need for 3- 4 weeks but maybe not, maybe they really cut down the role of Tullus but the relationship of the two men is rather central to the storyline so I find that hard to believe and that is where the best action and drama comes in the play. At least good to hear that both Gerard and Vanessa will be on set at the same time, I still have not finished reading the play so I wonder if they are both in the final scene - you know how Shakespeare has to have some big ending with everyone in the room that is still alive and make it bloody. www.celebrityoopsnews.com/3747/vanessa-redgrave-and-gerard-butler-arriving-in-belgrade/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

I like this website actually Film School Rejects and they say this I knew Ralph Fiennes was directing a modern dress version of Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus”, but didn’t expect to see Fiennes decked out ready for full on modern warfare. Shooting has begun in Serbia and has the look of a war movie. The film stars Fiennes as Shakespeare’s Roman general who makes the fateful decision to march on his own city with the aide of his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius. Aufidius is going to be played by Gerard Butler, saved from romcom hell and cast in a role where he can show off some acting chops. Opposite Fiennes and directed by Fiennes the Scottish actor who hit it big in 300, could be a force on film. There’s a lot of action that comes before the misguided decision by Coriolanus to turn on his own people. He’s just not well liked and he’s not crazy about the little people. But when he performs heroically they take him to heart; for a while. 30Ninjas.com has been covering the progress of the film. There’s some cool concept art there as well. Now there some photos of Fiennes in action. We’ve got a few of them above and below. All of this material makes me believe that this could be an adaptation of a Shakespeare play that can pull in an audience. Coriolanus has been given a modern, tough look. This has more in common with look of The Hurt Locker than The Globe Theater.
Fiennes and Butler could play very well off each other. The cerebral Coriolanus versus the brawn of Aufidius is well embodied by the two actors. I’m looking forward to seeing these two clash on screen.
The fact that Fiennes made the decision to go with modern warfare and not swords and sandals could be a brilliant one that could pay off artistically and at the box office.
