Finally watched this movie and I liked it. Gerry looked so cute and was so young here. I wasn't happy with some of the decisions Sam made and I didn't care for Sarah at all; she really annoyed me. I did like Sarah's dad though, especially that last part.

I don't think I would blantantly tell his wife I wanted to spend time with him; she was a homewrecker. I would want to say goodbye to him proper because she just went to New York and didn't even ask him to join her. Maybe a dinner and include the wife so you don't seem improper.

Yeah thats how I would've things as well Leppard. Sarah was just a hussy who was trying to get one more ride out of Sam. He lost everything and for what? A piece of ass?! What he did was going against his vows as a married man and sinning against God himself. You screw up you loose everything.

i watched this film over the weekend and without knowing who the director was or cast other than gerry it turned out be a beautifully made film equal to the 'cherry orchard'. artistically put together well. great shots of seacoast, cityscapes, country. it has a 'european feel'. cosmopolitan and intelligent. although the film was released in 1999, gerry's performance is stunningly reminiscent of his work to day in 2009. you can 'see' the beginning of his trade being finely honed into a mature craftsman. very nice. vadim jean directed funny-guy martin short in 'jiminy glick goes to lalawood' and james cosmo is recognized from braveheart and narnia. the two valeries are unfamiliar...but still good actors. "Directed by: Vadim Jean Cast: Gerard Butler, James Cosmo, Valerie Edmond, Valerie Gogan Rating: NR Review Summary: Vadim Jean directs this strikingly photographed tale about Sarah (Valerie Edmond), a 30-year woman coming to terms with both her life and her terminal cancer. The film opens with her contemplating suicide on top of a New York skyscraper. Cut to northern England, where she returns to her widower father Frank (James Cosmo) and her now married ex-boyfriend Sam (Gerry Butler), whom she previously dumped to pursue a career in the States. Frank has settled into a melancholy housebound rut and is disconcerted by her sudden appearance. Sam still has some feelings for his ex, but his wife Charlotte is none too pleased with her presence. Told with humor and brevity, the film offers well-drawn characters who interact until the inevitable yet dignified end. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide, NYTimes 8/16/09; online movies archives"

again, i really don't like going back to back posting...BUT, gotta mention after watching this film in particular although it was released ten years ago it hit me that 'gerry' is a lover not a fighter...now, i know...he is tough. yes. and he does action real well BUT....he's just....a poet, artiste, a lover type, you know?...if you were to discribe gerry as food what would he be?
to me....? he'd be chocolate covered pretzel....a hard & salty and smooth & creamy....yum yum

OMG! I know that will sound like blasphemy yet i just watched OMK and honestly, this is his best film. POTO aside ofcourse cause POTO is playing in another League ! I mean, after watching OMK i rest wondering what on Earth is he doing in L.A ? Seriously ladies, this film is a gem, perhaps even better than "Dear Frankie", although both these films ( OMK & DF) are soooooo up to this in comparing with Hollywood movies..... THIS is art...this is cinema as it has to be. Almost every single movie Gerard has made afterwards can't hold a candle in comparison..... Poetic yet very comprehensive and so emotional....strikes directly through the heart ! Tissue box in arm's lenght is necessary! G should be VERY proud of it ! PS Mind, in this film Gerard is just 30, with the most gorgeous hair i've ever seen and his Scottish accent as fine as it gets ! I've the vague impression it was filmed in Glasgow - it WAS Scotland, definitely! A totally MUST SEE film ! PS 2 I was so impressed by the artistic quality of the film that i looked for the director at the credits: Vadim Jean. Hmmm...why does it sounds familiar ? Rush into the IMDB to check his other films. And then i saw it : First on top, in pre-production status was...BURNS.

YES!!!! sassi...do you SEE what i mean?? i saw this film last summer and yeowzha!! this director is slated to do 'burns' along with cosmo james (the girls father in one more kiss)...this should very well prove to be an exciting rendition to this mans biography! vadim has surely matured over the years and honed his craft for terrific panoramic views then catapulting the viewer into the depths of the character only he knows how to do....gerry is PERFECT for this role. no holes barred....can't wait, so bloody excited to see the end result!

I am in total agreement with the two of you. This movie is a gem, and this is definitely one of his best performances. IMHO Dear Frankie and the Jury are right in line with this film both in quality of the film itself and his acting. These are also some of his most overlooked movies I think in part because they are not American films. This is truly unfortunate.

This is truly unfortunate. absolutely steph, without a doubt. any indie film whether its european or america always seems to have classical treasure within them. but, on the other hand it looks like the day has dawned for the 'independents' where lots of action & commerce are rising for these smaller companies...many actors also seem to be upstarting these companies to get away from the billion dollar moguls who want to stay comfortable and mainstream. why not the actors like gerry and evil twins.....film will be redeemed. thank you...there Is a God....LOL

Aside from Shooters, and moments in Gamer that didn't include Gerry, I loved Gerry's films. This was had a wonderful story and great scenery, the director did a great job with this film. I wasn't so happy with Sam's decisions later in the film (those who've seen it, know what I'm talking about) but Gerry was awesome in this role.... and before I forget, he looked so adorable.

I agree with you Steph and Lepp. I am a big fan of this movie too, and I am sad that it didn't get more credit than it did.
One of the main reasons for me being excited about Burns, other than Gerry of course, is the director. He did a really good job on OMK and I'm sure 11 years later, with both of them even more experienced, Burns will be a great movie.

I have to admint that OMK being one of his early works, and not having heard something about it, i expecting a rather mediocre rom- com. At the beginning i was totally stunned by the ...plainess of Gerard's leading ladies. Not one of them could be described as even remotely good looking. But then, i got carried away by the film's beauty....
Oh, and by the way, LL, about Sam's decision i suppose that love that he and Sara shared, was similar of Frank's and Shirley's. Even if they married other people, they still loved their first sweetheart. Sam understood he wasn't enough in love with his wife - which was a pitty for Charlotte, however it was fair for him. I loved the last scene with Frank on the phone...such a bitter sweet ending !
