Gerry LOVES kids and the day I met him there was one little five year old boy and he was a really outgoing friendly little guy and with his mother's help he had made this sign on the top of a cardboard lid. It was one sentence done in his little five year old scrawl, something about Gerard Butler.... Well he was so proud of it and he showed anyone that would look at it. It was really cute. So when the crowd mobbed Gerry and were pushing things in front of him for him to sign this little boy squeezed in between all these adult legs even though his mother was calling him back because he was determined to show Gerry his sign and he ended up right in front of Gerry. When Gerry realized he was there he squatted down to get eye level with him and autograph his sign... Gerry praised his sign, it was so sweet. Then it had been announced that Gerry couldn't take exclusive pictures with fans because there were to many people, but when he saw this little girl that was standing right in front of him, just beaming up at him he said, "Isn't she beautiful? Come here." and he autographed what she was holding and posed for a picture with her. Me and her were the only ones he posed with that day. That is a great memory for both those kids. This is one of the many, many reasons I love this man, he is so wonderful to his younger fans, I love that story about the little boy, so cute; it was so sweet to see him pose with that girl who was standing in front of you and Gerry, Di; and then seeing him playing hop scotch with Rhema, the seven year old gospel singer, just touched my heart.

Kloudancer came through and resent me the picture... Thanks Kris!!! As promised here is my picture with Gerry. Blurry but at least you can tell who everyone is... That's my daughter on the other side... She scooted up beside him and he was ignoring her, and then she said, "I'm her daughter!" and he looked down at her like, "Oh okay then," and he put his arm around her too.

I just watched a video of Patrick Wilson signing autographs at "The Switch" premiere. I like Patrick a lot and think he's very talented, but this video really made me appreciate the rapport and charisma that Gerry has with his fans!! Poor Patrick looked so uncomfortable, as if he couldn't wait to get away! While he was signing, he hardly looked at any of the fans, much less said 2 words to them before he left to get in his car. Gerry is so super friendly with ALL his fans--young, old, and in-between!! I just love the way he interacts with everyone and makes each person feel so special!! I guess that, too, in a way is a gift!! Kneum

Yes kneum it comes with the charm package and an understanding of that the nature of your business and your success is dependent on those people - those are your clients your customers so to speak.
My favourite guitarist is very much like Gerry in many ways, like he could sell A/C to the Inuit - he in fact was selling cars whilst the band was struggling to get started and he was the driving force of the band in the early days. He has always known that the fans make or break the band and everyone who meets him says he makes you feel special, he is also like Gerry a naughty flirt only a married naughty flirt. I also think it is because he honestly loves meeting people, he's just a sociable guy. Naturally he was always one of the guys they sent out to do the PR because he could sell the band and their music.

How could you hold the sign and not put your arm around him?! LOL I'm sure he wasn't ignoring your daughter. He was probably focused on taking the picture with you and was thinking about that only. He doesn't purposely ignore fans. It's still a pic for you to keep and remember always!!!

COME ON, DIANNE!! That is a GREAT photo - I knew right away that was your daughter with you and Gerry!! I would have had that thing pasted to my chest, made into a lovely throw, pillows, tattoo, you name it, honey! Just kidding (yeah, right), but really, you can tell it's you and Gerry, no problem. Thank the gods that Kloudancer saved it! But next time, hold the sign in the center with one hand and grab onto that man, lol!! You won't need the sign next time - he'll remember you and your naughty web site!!
We had loads of dairty fun on the new chat last night. We'd love to see more of you ladies there...maybe tonite??

Gerry is so super friendly with ALL his fans--young, old, and in-between!! I just love the way he interacts with everyone and makes each person feel so special!! I guess that, too, in a way is a gift!! :)Kneum To be fair, I think that most of the folks in that crowd were the e-bay autograph peddlers. The majority weren't trying to chat Patrick up the way a fan would. They were just shoving photos at him to sign so they could sell them later. I've met Patrick and have spoken with him several times. He's a very nice guy. Kind and gracious. But, he's much more conservative than Gerry is. It may be because he is married with two children and he sees himself as just a working actor (not a real "celebrity"). Hugging fans and chatting them up in general would not be comfortable for him in general. He's more likely to reserve that for people he knows. However he'll sign, pose for photos, etc for as many folks as he can. He's had lots of autographing experience starting with his Broadway stints. At the last play he did ("All My Sons" 2008-2009 season), he was the only one of the star cast who came down the fans section of the barricades. Dianne Wiest, John Lithgow and Katie Holmes came out the main door, signed for some the folks on the right hand side (audience members), waved for the paparazzi corralled on the lefthand side and went into their cars. Patrick and other cast members came down the barricade running parallel to the street to sign for other folks. It was neat to see folks waiting with DVD, CDs and Playbills for him to sign for themselves and not e-bay. Gerry seems much more outgoing and more likely to initiate a friendly exchange with a fan--if he's not grumpy. Patrick is more response-oriented. If you ask him something he will respond and he does smile and look you in the eye. From this video clip I can really understand why someone would think him as being rather cool to fans. Patrick is just more business like. He's cordial but not instantly chatty. I just wanted you to know that Patrick is a nice, gracious guy and he truly does appreciates fan support. My two cents...that's all this is. And, believe me, I'm hoping that if I ever meet Gerry he'll be in a good, playful mood so I can get a growl-y bear hug from him. *sigh*

Yeah, Dianne! Finally! i did not have any problem seeing that this was you, and that it was your daughter next to Gerry. It might be a little blurry, but it's still something you can treasure forever.
Yes, definitely a great chat last night. Time flies when you're having fun, that's for sure.

Gerry does not like the professional autograph hunters either and I would imagine he and Patrick can spot them a mile away now - I just came across footage where as soon as Gerry saw it was the Ebay crowd he walked in the other direction. Of course the cure for that is for people not to buy those photos. For me frankly unless the celebrity has signed that autograph for me specifically it means nothing so why would I buy it unless it was something very rare and special, like signatures or inscriptions in books, that are old. Or the person is dead even then I don't get the appeal.

I agree canadia... What's the point of having an autographed pic or item from a celebrity if it wasn't for you directly... It means nothing - no sentimental value attached to it. It's like buying someone else's memories... UGH!!! Some will use whatever they have to make a quick buck, and sadly, people buy it! I can't blame Gerry for turning the other way. He's such a great celebrity to follow, enjoy and appreciate...

I agree! Even though my autograph came through the mail. The fact that he took his precious time to write it FOR ME makes it special. That and the fact that I NEVER expected it make it invaluable.
