www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/celebrity/gerard-butler-set-pocket-least-5921897DETAILS of Butler's pay package were among thousands of internal discussions made public when Sony's servers were hacked last year. SCREEN hunk Gerard Butler is set to pocket at least $5million for new sci-fi film Geostorm. But the Paisley-born star’s deal could rocket even higher when lucrative profit-share bonuses kick in. Details of Butler’s original pay package were outlined in leaked emails between producers Skydance and Sony Pictures. The memos were among thousands of internal discussions made public when Sony’s servers were hacked last year. Sony later passed on the project claiming the film “lacked originality” but Warner Brothers decided to go ahead with the movie. Geostorm – which also stars Andy Garcia, Ed Harris and Jim Sturgess – is due in cinemas next year. The plot sees Butler playing a satellite designer who has to work with his estranged astronaut brother, played by Sturgess, to save the Earth from a meteorological catastrophe. But Sony’s senior creative director Adam North was less than impressed in a scathing memo to studio head Amy Pascal, who has since quit over the hacking scandal. David Ellison, head of Skydance Productions, had previously emailed Pascal asking her to back the film. He wrote: “I’m very hopeful that you respond to the material as I absolutely love this film creatively and think it could be a home run financially. “It would also be a privilege to be in business with you and your entire team at Sony, and hopefully Geostorm could be the first of many collaborations.” Ellison, who co-wrote the hit films Independence Day and Godzilla, also outlined the estimated cost of making the film, including the revelation that Butler would take up to a fifth of profits if it was a success. The Scot would be given a guaranteed $5million (£3.1million) but his profit share would increase the more money the film grossed at the box office. Ellison’s email read: “Gerard Butler (Jake) Deal: $5M. Back end is 15 per cent at Cash Break 10 escalating to 20 per cent at Cash Break 20.” But North hated the pitch and told Pascal: “The script is a jeopardy machine without originality and the idea is so far-fetched that the script is sort of Dead On Arrival. “The story lacks emotional drive, as the only relationship we should care about is the one between the brothers and they are separated for most of it (one in space and one on Earth). “Nothing about the script feels special.” The emails were published by website WikiLeaks and are the latest to emerge since the cyber attack provoked an international incident. The Geostorm email was among more than 30,000 documents and 173,000 emails released by WikiLeaks. North Korea was suspected of ordering the hack attack. The hardline dictatorship is thought to have acted in retaliation for Sony backing the film The Interview, about a plot to overthrow the North Korean government and assassinate its leader, Kim Jong-un.

Has anyone heard anything about the screening of Geostorm? Usually hear something: good, bad, indifferent. But nothing, worries me.

I seem to recall seeing this. The article is dated Sept. 1 and I think Deadline also had it.
The news just seems worse at second reading, though.

Another push back to October 20 2017 variety.com/2016/film/news/gerard-butler-geostorm-lego-movie-2-live-by-light-be-affleck-1201798398/Warner Bros. has pushed Gerard Butler drama “Geostorm” back nine months to Oct. 20, 2017, and delayed “The Lego Movie 2” until 2019. The studio has also moved Ben Affleck’s crime drama “Live by Night” forward nine months to Jan. 13, 2017 — which had been the slot for “Geostorm.” Affleck directed “Live by Night” from his own script, adapted from the 2012 novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane. The film stars Affleck, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Brendan Gleeson, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper and Elle Fanning. Finally, Warner Bros. moved its Ed Helms-Owen Wilson comedy “Bastards,” produced by Alcon, back to two months from Nov. 4 to Jan. 27. Warner Bros. has two other Lego movies coming in 2017 — “Lego Batman” on Feb. 10 and “Ninjago” on Sept. 17. “The Lego Movie 2″ will open on Feb. 8, 2019,” utilizing the same opening weekend that “The Lego Movie” had in 2014. “The Lego Movie” was a surprise success, opening with a $69 million weekend domestically. The film went on to gross $470 million worldwide. It’s the second time that “Geostorm” has been delayed. The studio originally dated the film for Oct. 21, 2016. “Geostorm” marks the feature directorial debut of Dean Devlin, who teamed with Roland Emmerich to produce 1996’s “Independence Day.” Devlin’s Electric Entertainment is producing “Geostorm” with Skydance Productions. Producers are Devlin, Skydance’s David Ellison and Dana Goldberg and Electric Entertainment’s Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan. Warner Bros. picked up the project after Skydance developed it. Devlin also wrote “Geostorm,” which centers on a satellite designer who tries to prevent disaster when the world’s climate control satellites fail to function.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/jerry-bruckheimer-boards-geostorm-as-866329Warner Bros., Skydance's 'Geostorm' Undergoes Reshoots, Brings on Jerry Bruckheimer (Exclusive)The troubled project starring Gerard Butler hired a new director for the reshoots after pushing the release date multiple times. Skydance, David Ellison's company, is facing some bad weather. Geostorm, the company’s big-budget Gerard Butler environmental disaster movie, is undergoing significant reshoots as producers try to rejig the movie that was to have showcased the directorial debut of producer and screenwriter Dean Devlin. Danny Cannon, who directed the 1995 Sylvester Stallone action movie Judge Dredd and has since become a reliable television helmer on such shows such as Gotham, is directing the reshoots which are being overseen by newly-installed producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The reshoots are not just light spruce-ups, either. Up to to $15 million is being spent, according to sources, and some notable characters are even being jettisoned from the script. Studio insiders play down the reshoots, terming them "pick-ups," and say the high cost is due to reassembling the international cast close to two years after the movie had wrapped principal photography. Geostorm marks the feature directorial debut of Devlin, who made his name writing and producing Roland Emmerich’s disaster tentpoles such as Stargate and Independence Day. Butler plays a man who heads into space to prevent climate-controlling satellites from creating a man-made storm of epic proportions. At the same time, he and his estranged brother learn of a plot to assassinate the president. David Ellison READ MORE Skydance Raises $700 Million in Funds for Film, TV Projects Geostorm is not only a big bet for Devlin as his directorial debut, but for Skydance, which is using the project, like it did with 2015's Terminator: Genysis, to transform the company from a film financier to a full-fledged creative production company. Ellison’s Skydance Productions independently produced and financed the film with Devlin's Electric Entertainment before it was picked up by Warner Bros. even though the company has a first-look deal with Paramount and has co-financed many of Paramount's key franchises, such Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation and Star Trek Into Darkness. According to sources, Greg Silverman, who announced Dec. 14 that he is leaving his studio post as Warners president of worldwide production, initiated the relationship with Skydance. Geostorm began shooting in October, 2014 in Louisiana and was initially slated for release on Oct. 21, 2016. But when test screenings in December, 2015 resulted in below average or “not bad but room for improvement” (as one insider put it) feedback, it was decided that the movie needed some work. In early 2016, Bruckheimer, the producer behind such mega-projects as the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, was brought in to consult as Skydance pondered whether to try to make changes in post or to prep for re-shoots. In the meantime, the release date moved to January 2017 and then to Oct. 20, 2017, its current slot. Multiple sources say the reshoots took place from Dec. 3-14 in Louisiana. The changes are significant. New characters, including a female scientist, have been added, while like a character played by Vikings star Katheryn Winnick’s was recast. Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) wrote the new pages for the reshoots. Insiders say that Devlin remains on board as the director of the movie but was unavailable to film the reshoots. The companies received a DGA dispensation to allow another director to helm the new scenes, say the insiders. In today’s landscape of big budget films, reshoots and additional photography are not an indicator that a film won’t be successful. In fact, additional photography is now routinely added into the schedule and budget. And even the most troubled of projects can sometimes find success in the end. For example, 2013’s World War Z, which Skydance was in involved with, suffered multiple setbacks, bringing on Damon Lindelof and Drew Goddard to rewrite the third act but ultimately was a commercial success, grossing over $540 million. Likewise, for the Star Wars spin-off Rogue One, which is hitting theaters this weekend, Lucasfilm and Disney bought on Tony Gilroy to write and help oversee extensive reshoots for a top-to-bottom makeover of film. The Felicity Jones-starrer has received strong reviews and is expected to be have the second biggest December domestic box office opening ever (behind 2015’s The Force Awakens). Geostorm will be one of two original Skydance productions for 2017. The company also developed and made the sci-fi thriller Life, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds and that Sony will release March 24.
