I have met people at church who have been here in the states since after WWII and still have a charming accent. With Gerry's training he will be careful keep it in check but watch out if that famous temper flairs! or he gets excited!

I think he would have to make a concerted effort to lose it and I can't see him doing that, it's his heritage and he knows his fans like it.

I did that too, I had a heavy, heavy southern accent what with being born in Alabama and all but when I moved to Maryland it was one of the many things I got picked on for so I made myself lose it. Now I've been told I have no accent lol. But when I get around people with the accent it totally comes back!

I have met people at church who have been here in the states since after WWII and still have a charming accent. With Gerry's training he will be careful keep it in check but watch out if that famous temper flairs! or he gets excited! My paternal grandmother was from Austria (so was my paternal grandfather's family - he was born in the states - Apetlon, Austria) always had her accent and her family emmigrated in the early 1900's when she was a young girl. I stayed in the south for 6 years (3 in Texas and 3 in Georgia) and it took half that to lose it. I remember a former co-worker once asking me if I was from the south. There was a time when I called my sister when I was still in Texas and she didn't recognize my voice because of the southern drawl.... I miss being down south, I really liked being in Texas (San Antonio, to be specific) and Georgia; downtown Augusta was so pretty especially by the riverwalk.

I love smaller town south. It's really funny...when I talk to someone down here they ask me if I'm a Yankee. When I go visit family in Toledo ( Di"s neighbor) They all say You sound so southern!!! I can't win for losing!! My poor boys they actually have a slight accent and the manners!! My family just freaks!! I like to say my boys have been brought up not drug up!!!

Well, when I speak French, I have the Quebec accent (for me it's not an accent but ask someone from France and they'll say differently)
A few years ago, when I spoke English, I had this HUGE French accent cause that was they only way I knew how to speak English. But after being engaged to a guy from Vermont and after teaching English for a few years, I kinda lost my French thing in English...there's still a little bit of it hidden in there somewhere, but it's not as noticeable as it was let's say 5 years ago!
