www.whatsonstage.com/index.php?pg=207&story=E8831231248094&title=Phantom+Sequel+Opens+in+Three+Cities+Simultaneously%3F%3F%3FPhantom Sequel Opens in Three Cities Simultaneously??? Date: 6 January 2009 Andrew Lloyd Webber has revealed an audacious plan for the launch of his new musical, a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera believed to be titled Phantom: Love Never Dies (See The Goss, 15 Sep 2008). The composer recently announced that he wants to open the show in three cities simultaneously – with London, New York and Shanghai mooted as the possible locations. The plan, if it comes off, would be a theatrical first, meaning that three separate companies would rehearse simultaneously, presumably having to coordinate when it came to any book or musical edits, which can often be drastic with new productions. It would also mean the casting of three Phantoms – with names including Ramin Karimloo, Rhydian, Hugh Jackman and Gerard Butler, who played the role in the 2004 film adaptation, already in the frame. A statement on Lloyd Webber's website reads: "I am delighted to confirm that, following a successful sing-through of the complete score of Love Never Dies ... I have decided to greenlight the production. Of course you never can tell how things will turn out, but we are exploring the idea of opening the show in the UK, America and the Far East in the autumn of 2009. This is a very exciting idea but obviously we have to see that it is logistically possible." Set ten years after the conclusion of the original story, Love Never Dies tells how the Phantom has escaped to New York with Madame and Meg Giry and found success in Coney Island as a magician and entertainer. When he builds a new opera house, he persuades his old ingenue Christine Daae, now a huge star, to sing for him once more...

I don't see Gerrry being able to tie himself down to a stage production right now. His singing experience limited to a soundstage in the origional Phantom I don't think he would jump at the chance to sing live he has had no experience in it. Now Hugh Jackman..Yeah man lots of experience.

I'm actually surprised they're going to do this. I read in the Star Tribune that there are some Broadway shows closing because of dismal ticket sales.

You would think Jackman wouldn't do it being that his career has taken off, but who knows.

My only hope is that if a second film is ever made they use the original cast

Me too Daisy. I don't know how far you are from London but Gerry could be chosen to be the London Phantom? It would only be an hour, give or take a few minutes to fly to New York for me. I mentioned it to hubby, we haven't splurged on a vacation in a while. My father-in-law's best friend's son is a producer for NBC Evening News out of New York and he could probably get us tickets to the new phantom. That would be exciting.

I'd drive the 8 hours or so and get down to New York, gladly! You know, you can go around back to the stage door and wait for the actors to come out. We may get lucky and see Gerry if he does the New york Phantom. I have a story that happened to me quite a few years ago. My little girl was six years old and I had bought the CATS video. My daughter LOVED that play. Well they had given the play a break so there was no way for her to see it live. As luck would have it a company formed and began touring the USA. I went on the CATS website where the actors posted along with fans and I went on and on how my little girl loved the play and we had tickets and blah, blah, blah. I said that she would be sitting on the aisle and could someone come up to her, because the CATS do come into the audience. One of the actors posted back to me and asked where we were sitting so I wrote him back and he said he would see what he could do... so I was pretty happy. Later I checked my e-mail and I got a note...It was from this gal and she said...my name is **** and my son is and actor in the play and I will arrange it so your daughter meets him and gets an autograph. I was floored! We go to the play and sure enough his mother found me and after the play we went to the stage door, we met him and then on top of it as we are standing there the cast starts filing out and one of the guys yells into the stage door, "Camera Op!" and all the actors come rushing out and we got a full cast picture with my daughter in the middle. It was so cool.

if it happened in NY, autumn would be good, just in time for my bday. And NY isn't that far for me to go at all. I'm always looking for an excuse to go.

I don´t think that Gerry would play the stage-phantom. He is so busy with filming in front of and behind the camera and I read that he also starts to write a script for a movie... You know Aysun, I was thinking the same thing. This article seemed to make it a sure thing, but I would be surprised as well. Matthew Brodrick (is that his name...Ferris Buller) he did The Producers on Broadway for quite a while but his carreer wasn't on the upswing then where Gerry seems to be just breaking out.

Nah I don't think GB would do this unless it was going to theater. Jackman...maybe since he did that one broadway not to long ago but he said that was hard work.
