ROMEO actor Gerard Butler got up close with a mystery woman on a late-night trip to the fair.

The 300 star was snapped snogging his stunning gal pal at the shows on Santa Monica Pier, Los Angeles.


And the video of the steamy encounter - captured by paparazzi - is one of the hottest items on Hollywood gossip websites.

The woman held Gerard's head tenderly in her hands as the couple shared a lingering kiss that lasted almost 20 seconds. As she waited for the actor to collect their car, the mystery brunette said: "All we are is friends.

"Yes, we had a good time. We just played games."

Hollywood action man Gerard, whose family live in Comrie, Perthshire, rarely comments on his love life despite speculation about flings with fellow Hollywood stars Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz. He has been spotted enjoying a couple of dinner dates with former Friends star Jen - most recently three weeks ago at LA's Tower Bar.

Gerard, 39, has dumped his tough-guy image for his next film, a rom-com with Katherine Heigl.

Last week it was reported the actor had turned to prayer to help him quit smoking after failed attempts with patches and hypnotherapy.

He said: "If this guy Jesus can die for mankind then the least I can do is stop smoking."
