GERARD BUTLER - A Hero
When i met him for first time in Berlin Festival, he could not have possibly even imagine the huge success of "300". Now, we meet again in another festival, in Toronto, for the first releasion in US of "Rocknrolla". Just arrived from London, where the British premiere took place, Gerry was in a particularly good mood. American audience loved the movie, unlike the British one, which was quite critical, like in most of Guy Richie's movies. The issue with Madonna has been overruled in London janket, a fact that was quite unpleasant - if not disturbing to the people of the movie. We speak about general issues, until the time of the interview begins, for Guy Richie ("the guy has a vision, patience and a unique sense of humor" said Gerry ), life in England, and also his leading lady Thanty Newton. " I like a lot Thanty Newton. What's the title of the movie she co-stared with Will Smith (Persuit of happiness)? She was perfect. Oh, i also remember her in the marvellous "Crash"! In this movie, in the accident scene, Mat ( Dilon) was "touching" her! Yet, in our movie, Guy Richie forbidden "touchings!"
However the premiere night in Toronto had had touching that came in publicity lights, when a fan of his, right there at the red carpet, started to pinch his cheeks, while he was signing autographs. At first he seemed cool and flattered, yet, on realising this lasted far too long than a few seconds, he stared at her and with a wide Mefistofel smile and obviously British humor he said her " If you don't stop pinching my cheeks i'll pinch your boobs". Unfortunately for him, this line of his was recorded by an US TV crew and the very next day he was the talk of the town in Canada.
I feel there is a constantly wondeful aura among the people that work with Guy Richie. In the movie there is indeed a very nice mood.
"I think that Guy Richie's secret is the fact that you can see the camera yet still you are unaware of shooting. This surprised me during filming. I indeed had no idea how cool and stylish he was directing." says Gerry. "So, while the camera was shooting, we had no particular sense of what we were doing . On seeing some parts of the movie, and the results of montage i said : Wow! How much fits my own reaction, for example, when maching with the montage and the rest of filming."
Do you feel for London something similar on the way it is showed in movie ?
Your feelings are mixed when you are familiar with the place you work and then you see it pictured quite differently on screen. London is a great place and remains perfect just as it is. Seeing it through Guy's camera you realise that even the old sense of London when mixed with the modern, still stays cool. In Guy Richie's London, situations involving with money in high levels turns the peaceful centre of the city in a declined area of the frontiers, where everything tragic can take place.
The movie starts with the line " Property is a gamble". Is there a personal gamble you are willing to take in your personal life?
Are you asking me if i would gamble ?
Yes, in particular what will you be willing to "gamble" on ?
You know, my dad was a gambler, and this didn't result in nice things. This has lead me in avoiding any kind of gambling.
Do you concinder yourself a "hidden ace" ?
Without being absolutely sure what does this term means, i'll agree with you.
One of the heroes of the movie is quite superstituous and because of the stealing of the painting he causes a dramatic change in the story. Are you superstituous in real lfe ?
( laughs) So, you are asking in a sly way about myself, by using the movie's characters "...he is superstituous...."? Now i know that YOU are supestituous.
Seriously though, i'm superstituous in various things. Yes....sometimes i manage to control myself . Superstitions, if not my prejudices, are about the way some things are going to end, i mean, if an action of mine will lead me to the aim that i had in my mind from the beginng.
The briefest sex scene i've ever seen was in this movie. So, do you believe that "less is more"?
You mean concise in sex ? *
*Clarification:The Greek word actually means something like "Quality more than quantity"
I mean duration...
For me, small sizes and limited duration is always the very best.
Do you consinder yourself connected with Greek Mythology or Greek history otherwise besides your role as Leonidas in "300" ?
I am full with honour just by remembering that i managed to portray such a great role. I'm aware he's a particularly important hero for Greeks and Greek history. After a series of movies i've done, i get to know Greek culture and a lot of Greeks as well. After the success of "300" i'm particularly happy each time i meet Greeks who confirm me their pride about the way i portrayed the character of Leonidas. This is for me an unparallelled story. Really i gave in this role the very best of me, because i loved it. And this has to do with my mention above about superstitions. In this very movie i tried to travel by mind thousands years back and imagine his sould and spirit for being able to portray his character.
Have you imagined that your career would change after "Leonidas" ?
Yes, even if i couldn't have imagine the success of the movie. However, any movie that has a success of some form can change one's career.
Have you ever visit Greece ?
Yes, and i loved it and have returned three times.
I've been in Spetses and Hydra. We had the filmings for "Lara Croft" in Santorini. Every time i've been there i have also visited Athens.
Being himself a fan of P.S. granted his casting in the movie " P.S. I love you" he got stunned in the follow question:
What's your own P.S. ?
What's my own P.S ? Your asking me weird things ! P.S. "I'm going to eat my lunch"!
So, enjoy your lunch !
Have fun, you too....Thank you !
On finishing the interview one of his people said me that i was asking him interesting questions. Gerard agreed and added "Yes, but you try answer them".....
