I think it's meant to be intimidating. It's the shades they're very close of to the audience.

There is another photo of the same group here www.ahds.rhul.ac.uk/ahdscollections/docroot/shakespeare/imagedetails.do?imageId=12656but the guy we think may be Gerry has his face covered by someone's hand! I think the black guy sitting down is Tullus Aufidius in this stage production. Also, the programme lists 8 actors, including Gerry in "the ensemble", which ties in with the 8 shown in the original photo and I'm pretty sure he isn't any of the other 7!
