Archive interview: young Gerard Butler laughs off suggestion he’s a ‘stud’ Appearing on Scottish TV back in 1999, Gerard Butler was an up-and-coming actor – but even before becoming a Hollywood star it turns out he had a way with the ladies... 07 November 2011 12:40 GMT Appearing on Scottish TV back in 1999, Gerard Butler was an up-and-coming actor – but even before becoming a Hollywood star it turns out he had a way with the ladies! At the time the handsome leading had yet to become a Hollywood star, but was a rising talent promoting 1999 romantic drama One More Kiss, about a woman who flees from New York back to the Scottish borders with a secret to share. He appeared on cheeky Grampian show Loud TV to promote the movie, though the presenters were more interested into the reputation he was already gathering for himself in the tabloids! They quizzed the fresh-faced star about his reputation in papers as a bit of a stud. Gerard replied: “It is a bit funny that they’ve made such a big deal about it. “It’s nice, but it’s not what it’s about. You do these interviews, and you talk about your work, and talk about great actors that you’ve worked with, and you’re asked about actresses you’ve snogged. I don’t think it’s about that, I think it’s a bit sad sometimes.” Butler said of the movie he was promoting: “I’m so proud of it. It’s a lovely movie, beautifully show, and she [co-star Valerie Edmond] is amazing in it.” The actor also talked about his role that same year in low-budget Scottish comedy Fast Food, in which he starred alongside Dougie Henshall, Emily Woof and Miles Anderson. I just had the biggest epiphany as a fan after watching the 1999 interview. It hit me that Gerry has always taken his craft very seriously, it isn't something that happened in recent years. But the poor guy has been struggling with people's perception of him because of his good looks. I am sure his looks opened a lot of doors for him but I now tend to wonder if he sometimes feels if those were the doors he wanted to open. In other words, even good looks can be a problem if you want to be taken seriously as a professional.
On a lighter note I suppose we can all guess who Gerry would choose to leave the studio with if given half a chance and it wasn't the lady in grey. :-) I am surprised that the didn't give the lovely lady in red sitting on his left the Butler eyes once. He didn't even seem to notice. He seemed so preoccupied with trying to talk about his work. WOW, I have been pleasantly impressed. :-)

Thank you Terez for this delightful interview. It's good that the interviewers knew their boundaries 'We're not allowed to fondle the guests'!

I guess Paula Yates had different rules on her show, given her interviews took place on a bed, LOL.

Yes Gerry is just adorable, the earnest young actor, though you can't help wanting to scoop him up like a sweet stray puppy and take him home. Sorry Gerry.

I cannot believe how much he was the same in his younger years! So adorable and seemed innocent somehow. Loved it.
What really surprised me was that he was already being called a stud early on. Wow. I'd like to hear all the stories going around about him back then.
He looks great!

Thanks for snipping Gerry Fifi. He is adorable and it was the 90s so his suit was probably in style then. Love that third shot down. He looks completely impish in it. Love the hair color and hair porn too.
