GBASE has apparently purchased or optioned another book property, called "“The Garden of Last Days,” by Andre Dubus III.
When this happened is not clear but Kissthegirl lead us to this item buried in an article about another one of the author's book being bought.
Andre Dubus III wrote the novel that was the basis for The House of Sand and Fog which is a movie I loved, with Ben Kingsley, Jennifer Connelly and a fabulous Iranian actress Shohreh Aghdashloo [ www.imdb.com/title/tt0315983/ ]
Here is the excerpt from this article
This will be the second of the younger Dubus' books to be made into a movie. His novel "House of Sand and Fog" was turned into an Academy Award nominated film. His novel "The Garden of Last Days" is under contract with actor Gerard Butler's production company, and his first novel, "Bluesman" has been in movie development for years.
My comment is that since this novel deals with the issue of Islamist terrorism and takes place around the time of 9-11, this might be something Gerry would prefer to do than say something more overt like Consent to Kill or if, even before it was just announced they were going with a prequel, Gerry decided to make his own movie about the issue but with a different approach. Very interesting just I cringe for all Hollywood actresses when I see yet another main female character happens to be a stripper though in this case yes it is really is necessary for the plot line for a change.
"The Garden of Last Days" is not listed on the IMDB for Gerard/GBASE yet. The only in Development is Afterburn and Mavericks. So perhaps this is a new acquisition.
If this is an optioned property, it may have an expiry date however. If anyone knows how that works please share otherwise I need to look it up. My guess is rather than buy the movies rights of a book property outright, the author gives you first option on the movie rights and you pay some amount of money for the privilege of that option, but you are given a certain period of time to get your act together vis a vis putting together a script etc but then if you don't exercise your option by a certain date, the deal is off and the author can market those rights to someone else rather than having the move rights tied up, "sitting on the shelf" forever. If you do exercise your option you pay the rest of the money? This way it would be cheaper for production companies, rather than have all their money tied up in these movie rights, they only put out the bulk of the money once they are ready to go into pre-production, unless they really really don't want anyone else to have those movie rights, in which case they'll take the risk and buy the movie rights with no conditions, assuming of course the author agrees to it. I also imagine that once you buy the movie rights, unless you've agreed to something different, as with all contracts the possibilities are always endless, you can sell those rights to someone else down the road so it is transferable asset.

Hey Canadia! I wasn't able to find any info on when the rights were purchased, but I did find a contact for the author's film agent. I won't have time to contact him until Tuesday, but if you'd like to try to contact him sooner, the email is: joel@ipglm.com
Let me know if you make contact. ( I wouldn't want to overwhelm the man....but then again maybe we ALL should write to ask!! Let them know there's a lot of interest! lol)

Hey Canadia. I sent an email this evening. I asked when the contract deal was made, if there is any studio connected, and if there is any possibility the film could get made in the next year or two. Only thing to do now is wait to see if he writes back. Keep your fingers crossed. If this gets made and is even half as well done as House of Sand and Fog, Mr B's prod company is going to be looking really good. I like the idea of our Mr Butler being known as a quality filmmaker.
Cannes-Bound With Directing Project, James Franco Commits To Helm ‘Garden Of Last Days’ By MIKE FLEMING JR | Saturday April 27, 2013 @ 12:47pm PDTTags: Andre Dubus, Garden Of Last Days, James Franco, Millennium Films

EXCLUSIVE: James Franco, whose film As I Lay Dying screens in competition at Cannes next month, has locked in his next directorial outing. He’ll helm and play a starring role in Garden of Last Days, an adaptation of the bestselling book by House Of Sand And Fog author Andre Dubus III. Shooting will begin July 8 in New York. Millennium Films is financing.
The film is being produced by Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, Danielle Robinson and Hanna Weg. Weg, who scripted the Renny Harlin-directed Hercules 3D, wrote the script. Longtime Franco collaborators Vince Jolivette and Miles Levy will also produce. Pic is a contemporary thriller set in the seamy underside of American life about three interwoven and ultimately explosive stories: A stripper out of options who brings her 3-year-old daughter to work; an angry, lonely man who gets thrown out of the club; and a foreigner with an endless supply of cash on the brink of committing a terrifying act. Dubus set the novel around 9/11, but gave his blessing to set the film in present day New York. This movie fills up the spring & summer calendar for Franco. After Cannes, he will star in Good People opposite Kate Hudson and Omar Sy. And then he will direct Garden of Last Days. Franco is repped by CAA and James/Levy Management.
I wonder if Gerry is still involved in this project as an actor in the film or just producing

He is producing, but I would think he would be in it also, it is several stories so he could easily be in one of them if he is in the movie. I hope he is in it. But glad to hear the news it is going to be done; one if he played to foreigner with an endless supply of money or angry, lonely man; I could see Franco in the latter.

Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny." - Lao-Tze
Maybe we will hear additional news from Cannes on TGOLD but this isn't a good sign that Franco has signed onto a project for August. As a director he would have a lot of work pre and post production so it doesn't seem likely at he will be shooting a film in July and starring in another film in August.

We already know that casting for other roles in The Garden of Last Days is underway and the August start date for this second movie may yet change. More information will be forthcoming in due course. For all we know another director may be taken on for TGOLD if Franco wants to do the Wim Wenders project and that particular start date isn't amended. It's another case of watch this space.
