My New Celeb Biker Crush (And Other Monday Musings)
First thing's first. How hot is Gerard Butler in general and then how much hotter is he with a cute helmet strapped on his scruffy little Scottish head while biking with some pals? I'll tell you how hot. This hot:
Don't judge me because I read Just Jared.
In other, less attractive news, after 16 straight days of commuting, I had a near bike-free weekend. It was tough. I pulled a muscle in my leg during some crazy capoeira class early in the week and my gams just haven't bounced back totally yet.
Since I've got a 70-mile ride to Long Island planned for Saturday (more on that fun-ness to come), I figured it might be prudent not to wear myself out beforehand. I biked from my friend's apartment in the UES to Astoria in very annoying misty rain on Saturday afternoon and didn't touch Blue till this morning's commute to work.
Lady and the tramp bike.
I missed her. She completes me. I don't usually use a s/he pronoun when addressing Blue, mostly since I think it's a pretty androgynous and too-cool-for-labels kinda bike and shouldn't be pigeonholed into silly things like gender associations. But for today and probably the rest of the week she gets to be a lady because I've been making a conscious effort not to treat her like a friggin' racehorse for once. No denying it. She's a vintage an old gal and has been through quite a lot in the past year. We're both appreciating the break.
That being said, today's commute was such a 180 from last week, right? Chilly, overcast and I arrived to work not drenched in a shower of my own perspiration. There seemed to be a lot of crap blocking the bike lanes today, though, which made me think of this guy and want to stop to take a picture but I was late for work and too busy trying to weave around said obstructions without getting hit by oncoming traffic. Mission accomplished.
I was so (so, so, so) excited to be greeted by a nearly-completed double lane bike path at the foot of the Queensboro Bridge this morning. I wonder if TransAlt might have something to do with this? I first realized they were building this path about a month ago and I squeal inside every time I roll by. As it stands, it's so annoying to exit the bridge on the Queens side. You either have to go the wrong way down a one-way to get to the closest bike path or backtrack a few streets along with traffic and cut back over. Too much trouble for a biker in a hurry and confusing if you're unfamiliar with the area.
Mostly, I just go the wrong way (for shame, yes) because the street isn't that busy and it's only for a block. But there were two cop cars lined up today after work and I figured they were just waiting for some cycling fool to make a mistake so they could actually write a ticket for a ticket-able offense (for once).
Don't get it twisted. I was not about to be that fool.
I'm looking forward to a much, much cooler biking week ahead. Also, there's a group ride on Thursday dedicated to biker chick Jasmijn Rijcken who was rudely told to change her skirt by some bonehead cop in Brooklyn since it could distract drivers (UPDATE: Turns out this story might not be 100 percent accurate. Hope someone gets to the bottom of it soon!).
I'm going to do my best to make this after work on Thursday and hope lots of you will, too. I might even break my no-skirt rule and rock a dress or something. This frightens me. I don't know if I'm lady enough to handle it. It's not mandatory but I'm not one to turn down a challenge so...we'll see?
I'm sick of all these stories about cyclists getting ticketed or harassed for things that aren't actually illegal. I see cyclists do stupid shit every day (I'm talking to you delivery boy on your cell phone while running a red light on 1st Ave—at rush hour!) and get away with it and I can't believe cops are wasting their time measuring hemlines and slapping people with $50 fines for avoiding bike lane blocks. This list by the Gothamist sums up all ticket-worthy violations pretty nicely. Check it out if you haven't. It's important we know our rights.
