Someone asked what is the difference between Galas and Special Presentation on twitter and this was the reply
"Good question. All Galas screen first at Roy Thompson Hall and most Gala screenings will be premium screenings."
Yes Roy Thompson Hall is the Gala venue.
Most films will be screened more than once so if you just want to see the film and not Gerry, you can try and get tickets for a regular screening. And what they do at TIFF is this, if you don't show up for a regular screening by a certain time, you lose your seat and then they allow people who line up in stand by to get in.
this is because the crazy way they do the ticketing, it is always likely that there will be empty seats
you buy a package for 10 movies and you don't always get a choice in which ones so you may not go to all the them or some crazy person buys the 50 movie package and they burn out

Okay I thought this was the case and this was posted on Twitter: "Special Presentation are red carpet events and held at Elgin or possibly Princess of Wales. Galas at Roy Thompson. All sold" www.twitter.com/MoiraFraser70I figured the Special Presentations might be held at Princess of Wales this year which is smaller than Roy Thompson but very beautiful, Elgin is OK, and not sure if tweeter mean all Galas are sold out or all Galas and Special Presentations packages are sold out? Like I said I still not sure how it works except you can only get specific tickets to specific films after the programme is out, after August 23rd. Package holders take the tickets first. So it's every man and woman for him or herself. Might have to make a trip to TO very very very early Aug. 26. Just moving some chat over here [×] [o] Canadia: I live in Brantford but if I don't get tickets I'll just hang out for the red carpet, I just want one real life glimpse of the Scottish hottie, if I lived in TO I would volunteer for TIFF every year 26 Jul 11, 13:39 [×] [o] patthekat: I'm working at Scotiabank for the festival, which is actually part of the festival corridor this year. 26 Jul 11, 13:38 [×] [o] patthekat: Where do you live, Canadia? You could stay with me! And patthekat is working the Festival this year so we got someone on the inside LOL

I figure that if I go I'll do the red carpet thing for both movies and potential press conferences. I figure since I won't know until fairly last minute if I will be able to go at all that I won't get any tickets for the premieres/ galas... but maybe to other screenings not attended by the stars. Of course I have to make a hotel reservation no matter if I can go or not.... but I can always cancel that...
So who all is going? (Or thinking about it?)
I hope both of Gerry's movies will be shown within a day or two.... I can't stay more than a few days....

I went to TIFF a few years back. Fantastic and totally exhausting experience.
If I am remembering correctly, the easiest and best way to get tickets, if you live out of town, is to purchase a package. My friend and I bought a ten-pack of tix, good for 10 showings. You do not choose films at the time you purchase the tickets. A few weeks before festival, they send you a list of days and times of films. At that time, you choose which films you would like to see. It is a HURRY HURRY HURRY situation, because the quicker you return your list of choices, the more likely you are to get that which you asked for. We asked for a pair of tix for each of 5 films. We had our request list back in the mail-express same-day delivery- within 30 minutes, and did get ALL of our first picks.
Gala tickets are sold separately, kind of like buying concert tix online. I was online IMMEDIATELY when the ticket sale opened, and spent quite a lot of time trying and re-trying to purchase. We were lucky to snag a pair of tix to the gala we were interested in as well.
When you get to Toronto, you can also get lucky with the ticket office which handles tix to films people decided they couldn't attend. Lines are long, and it is hit-or-miss.
And sometimes, if you go and wait on line outside a film that will be screening within the next few hours, people may have extra tix or they may have a few open seats that will sell at the last minute.
Just for info... the Galas are HUGE GIGANTIC, way bigger than a normal film premiere. THOUSANDS of people outside hoping for a glimpse of the stars. But the stars will usually come to the ropes and sign a few autographs for the crowd.
As for stars attending the other films being screened, it is again, a hit-or-miss proposition. Of the 5 films we saw separate from the Gala, 3 of them had stars, directors or someone there briefly to talk to the audience. However, they usually only do that for the FIRST screening. I only heard of one actor that attended all the showings of his film.
Which reminds me, most films will screen at least twice at various theaters throughout the area. So, your chances are pretty good, especially if you want to see some of the smaller films.
But, a word of caution, lines are LONG, even when you have tickets. Plan to get there at least 90 minutes early for every film you are attending. You may lose your seat if you are there less than an hour ahead of scheduled screening time.
It is a wonderful experience, with stars walking all around the city, and loads of fun bars, clubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. All the big hotels are also easily accessible, and star-gazers are a constant outside the 4 Seasons and several other big hotels.
To those of you attending, I wish you good luck getting your tix. Bring a camera, some comfortable shoes for walking between venues, and a couple of nice outfits for evening fun. Have a great time!!

From what I've been told, the Princess of Wales doesn't have a theatre screen but will have one constructed just for the festival Haven't heard whether they're going to have any red carpet events there yet. It's less than a block from the TIFF Bell Lightbox. .

Something else that might help with getting tickets. Besides the main box office at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, there will be another location downstairs in the Metro Centre, kitty-corner from there. Understandably, there will be RUSH lines for films, which means if you don't have a ticket, and you want to get in, you'll have to get in line for awhile to see if you make it. Bring something to read and drink. Yes, the Roy Thompson Theatre is GALA CENTRAL. People CAMP OUT for hours on end just to get a glimpse of the stars. As we all know, Gerry loves to connect with his loving fans and he's been to TO many times, so he's not a stranger to this town. He's overdue for a visit.

thanks kissthegirl and pattheGerrykat, I think I almost understand how this works finally.
So in fact it may not be so crazy on red carpet as MGP and Coriolanus are not Galas but Special Presentations.
The sidewalk in front of Princess of Wales would make a great red carpet area. Just saying.
So the Special Presentation films are just considered the same as any other film or are they different from regular screenings ie more expensive right. They'd have to be right for the premiere showing at one of the nicer theatres?

Special Presentations can either be special/separate purchase or as part of a ticket package. It varies by film. The info will be released on August 23 on their website.

Forgot to say that the waiting, guessing games, hoping, and rushing about like a mad person are part of the charm/frustrations of the festival.

I'll take your word for it KTG, but control freak kind of people like myself hate that kind of uncertainty. I live close enough that I am not too worried about hotels or even getting tickets. I'd be just as happy celeb watching, Toronto is going to be very populated with famous faces and trying to just catch a glimpse on the red carpet. Very hard for anyone coming from any distance though but I guess this is the way TIFF makes their festival more fair overall and it is supposed to be for movie lovers as in lovers of all kinds of movies not just Gerard Butler movies LOL.
Now I do think there will be some contests, what the heck may as well enter them too. You never know.

LOL Canadia. It is truly a madhouse. Saw 6 great films tho, including Wind that Shakes The Barley, Volver, Rescue Dawn, A Good Year, Candy, and I think we saw A Home at the End of the World.
I too am a control freak, and the ticketing situation drove me nuts. Airline tix had to be bought, room reserved, and NO IDEA when the damned films were going to screen. What a disaster trying to work it all out with o9nly 2 weeks to do it all. We had great trouble getting a room that late, especially since the films we wanted to see were all in the first weekend. Our hotel was over a mile from the theaters, and it was a looooong walk every day.
Having to be at the theaters so early also made it hard to be on time, especially when you have at least 2 films scheduled for each day. We had 2 almost back-to-back, about 10 blocks apart, and were running like 2 lunatics...not to mention that the first one started almost half an hour late. Luckily, they let us in with only about 15 minutes left before the curtain went up.
Totally crazy, but really a lot of fun too.
Rooms are already completely sold out at 4 Seasons and Hilton plus a couple of other 5 star hotels in the city. It is a star-studded incredible 10 days. I am hoping to go again, but it is doubtful that I will be able to make it. Been trying to go back for 3 years now, but something always seems to get in the way.
I hope you find some contests, and win great tickets to some great films. I think the festival is fantastic, and really organized if you just don't think about how last-minute the ticketing is. For film folks, I am sure they just plan to be there for a length of time, and will see whichever films are available for that time frame. I would like to do that myself. Maybe someday........

Okay I am trying to figure out this for future festivals.
Say I bought the gala packages so all my bets were hedged, I just realized the first screening of a Special Presentation is considered a Premium Screening and considered a gala for package purposes and I am assuming all premieres are in the evening, either 6 pm or 9 pm.
And I put in my selections and I am able to get the tickets I want within all those packages and I may or may not get other films I would like to see. Can you cancel the ticket packages you don't want or scalp the tickets or can you return the tickets you don't want and need and get reimbursed because then I could see the value if you can carry that kind of balance on your VISA of getting the packages to hedge your bets if you could return all the tickets you don't want later which is why it would be crazy in August sorting all this out. Or better yet scalping them for a good price. Psst wanna see Brad Pitt's premiere....
KTG I have always thought it would be fun to do the 50 movie pak crazy but fun. I love foreign movies and we have so few outlets to see them.
Well I have realized this too late. Perhaps Mr. Butler will make it to a Gala Premiere in the next few years.
