Now they suggest Russell Crowe as Valjean which I can see more age and type wise and Hugh Jackman as Javert well, he's the second to last person I can see playing that role.... Huh??? (Gerry being the last...LOL) Why do they pick hot guys as Javert? He is not supposed to be Gerry or Hugh - ish hot! Eeeek.... I stopped reading after they started to bash the singing in POTO again. That is WHY Gerry will never do another movie musical again. I think he really got hurt when he got all this hate for that movie. I just hope that some of the love from his fans for him in that role got through to him too... But he hinted in a few interviews when ask about rumored roles "Well, they probably don't want me in it, they want Michael Crawford..." Just listen to the Nim's Island fan club interview, it's in there and he said something like that in other interviews as well. He never ever was disrespectful toward MC but he was hurt by all the negative comparisons. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed his singing in POTO, I loved the rockin' edge to his voice and that was what ALW had wanted for the movie role. Gerry's acting was amazing and when I wrote my fan letter to him, I told him how much I loved this movie, his singing and that his performance moved me to tears. I can't decide which pairing I would like more: Gerry and Johnny Depp or Gerry and Hugh Jackman. I LOVED Gerry's singing. His voice was a huge part of my becoming a fan. Unfortunately a lot of people hated him in that role.... I doubt he'll do a musical again...

I heard one interview on youtube and he said he knew the way ppl talk about his singing and he seemed as he doesn't bother himself at all about negative opinions..
Every actor, ever movie is criticized..for example the Godfather.. and Marlon Brando, Al Pacino.. Ppl love to blame others...

As Gerry also said in an interview, Andrew Lloyd Webber apparently thinks Gerry can sing...and given the career that man has had, and the many people he has heard sing, I'll take HIS word for it. I also know that Gerry gives me tingles down the spine when he sings Music of the Night, and that's pretty good, imo.

Chiming in to say how much I love love love Gerry's singing voice! He makes me swoon and lose all senses. The first time I saw POTO I didn't know who he was. I rented POTO (never saw it on the big-screen until after I became a fan), was (thankfully) alone when I watched it. After watching Music of the Night, I hit pause and literally just sat on my couch staring at the TV, feeling like someone just made love to me and walked away leaving me in my euphoria. It hurts my heart so much knowing how hurt he was after reading and hearing the criticism he received. If Joel Schumacher and ALW didn't think he was good enough, he wouldn't have gotten the part!! I'm glad he's singing more and more now because that deep, growly sexy singing voice needs to be shared with the world

100% Hearing Gerry sing is a sensual experience, it left me breathless and wanting more. I think I had a Gerrygasm the first time I heard him sing Music of the Night.

He never really admitted that openly but you get the hint in several interviews. I remember an interview from the German POTO premiere. They asked everybody on the red carpet to sing something. Gerry refused saying that he always thought he can sing but now that he knows how it's really done he doesn't believe in his singing abilities anymore. It broke my heart hearing him say that. He is slowly getting over it but I believe he was deeply hurt. PS... no need to say that I LOVE his singing voice. I always stood up to his singing on the internet and was ridiculed many times for doing so.

I believe that's due to the fandom, if I'm completely honest. I think we have told him over and over how much we love his singing, then he sang in PSILY and heard nothing but GOOD things about it. Even Bonnie (our favorite interviewer) keeps telling him how much she loves to hear him sing.

What it comes down to is when ever you do a remake of something that is hugely popular and well loved, it is very very difficult to match or go beyond the original, sometimes it happens but enough to even make lovers of the original go yeah it is as good or better......so you will always find the people who love the original will never accept any other versions even if Andrew Lloyd Webber was involved in the movie.
Something like the POTO as well is still playing in theatres all over the world so if you loved the first production of POTO you saw you may never find another version is up to snuff, I saw it twice at the theatre but both times with the same cast which is also the cast on the soundtrack I bought which I played over and over and over again.
One thing to try and redo a classic that hasn't been seen for a while, even then some people will never be happy. And when it comes to music, people have very specific tastes. I am not a real opera buff but I can appreciate it on a limited basis and I will take Kathleen Battle over any other soprano out there, I find Jessye Norman does not have the clarity of tone that Kathleen Battle does, she seems to sing with an affected manner, to my amateur ears whereas to me Kathleen Battle has a purity of voice that gives me the chills and also makes me jealous. I am sure there are operatic fans and experts who would pooh pooh me and think me stupid. We all likes what we like.
For me the Rocky Horror Picture Show is the movie with Tim Curry et al and nothing else will do. My soundtrack tape got munched and someone gave me the British cast version of Rocky Horror Picture Show, sorry, it's the original or nothing. Which is why Gerry should not feel bad. If he were Michael Crawford or Sarah Brightman or Colm Wilkinson and people hated the singing then you'd feel bad. And a lot of people hate Andrew Lloyd Webber too. One of my fav bands Crowded House has a whole verse if a song about Andrew Lloyd Webber that is a bit mean but hey they are Aussie/Kiwis, otherwise a funny song
Not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber May his trousers fall down as he bows to the queen and the crown I don't know what tune the orchestra played But it went by me sickly sentimental
[Chocolate Cake song title]
The reality is that was a highly successful movie and soundtrack and that is because a whole lot of people did love the singing and that is all Gerry needs to remember. Because POTO fans are fickle and even if you may not have won them all over you won over a lot and you brought in a lot of new fans to POTO. One of my best friends, who has exquisite taste, has to watch POTO with Gerry at least once a month or she has withdrawal and she is not otherwise a fan of Gerry or not especially, okay she loved Attila and had to buy the DVD, but anyway, she is more a fan of POTO and that film.

I always stood up to his singing on the internet and was ridiculed many times for doing so. My daughter is a huge Phanny...Phantom of the Opera stage play fan so I get where all the animosity comes from. I think most people thought a classically trained voice should get the part and for years Michael Crawford had been offered the part and he was really excited about it and talked about it on many interviews. He even said if they waited any longer he would be playing the phantoms grandfather... The movie was held up because of Andrew Lloyd Webber's divorce to Sarah Brightman so by the time it was made I think it was decided that Micheal Crawford was too old. So agreeing with what Canadia said no one would have been able to fill the shoes of Crawford as far as the die hard phans were concerned and anyone other than lets say someone like Micheal Ball would have been lambasted. Gerry shouldn't feel bad. This is about the only man that the stage play phannies would have not had a problem with.... If anyone is wondering who Michael Ball is.

Oh I agree, Gerry has gotten over the hurt over the years and it's true that it mostly is due to fans like us.

I was a Phanny like Dianne's daughter too and was upset when Michael Crawford didn't get the role but some young dude I had never heard off....LOL I didn't read any reviews before I saw the movie because I wanted to go in with an open mind... and I absolutely fell in love with Gerry including his voice.
