I would not worry about the box office number yet. That's just an estimate. My guess is they had no clue how much the movie made Friday and just put any good old nice round number there. And as Kneum posted, it still has a higher per screen average than Moneyball. I think once the weekend numbers come out it'll be different. Plus Friday night is date night and MGP is not a date night kind of movies. I think the numbers will be way better Saturday and Sunday. I hope you are right GA but I think it would have been better to post NA than to just throw out that $10,000 amount if they had no clue. And sorry to say Kneum's comparison is true but doesn't apply in a limited release., Opening limited in 4 theaters is about seeing if an audience is clamoring to see a film and touting that -you need to see lines down the street and tickets sold out for every showing. We don't know what kind of theaters MGP is showing... maybe our LA/ NYC members could clue us in. Is it showing at the biggest house in a multi-plex (then I would be worried about the numbers) or some small art house theater. Even if it sells out every showing, if it is a smaller theater the numbers are not going to be big. I hope a good word of mouth will help the numbers along no matter what. The weekend estimates should be out around noon... so that will be interesting to see... I think we have a better idea then than just going by Friday's numbers. RockNRolla had a strong opening in limited release www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=rocknrolla.htmBut then didn't do well. Hopefully MGP will do the opposite.

Thank you for the insight, Holly, and for suggestions on how we can take some action on behalf of Gerry and the film. We want to do something but feel so helpless. I am definitely going to take you up on your suggestion that we post our views of Gerry's performance and the film and our reaction to blatantly unfair personal attacks.
I feel that some of the critics have taken their criticism to a personal level and I will be responding to them. The response to the film and Gerry's performance from the hosts of The View, Howard Stern and Richard Roeper, to name a few was extremely positive and they didn't hesitate to share their enthusiasm publicly. They have broad audiences, hopefully broader than the critics that attacked the film unfaily.
I am a lurker and don't think I have ever posted before but I was becoming concerned and your post was most reassuring. I will do all I can to help by posting my views especially after I have a chance to see the film. Unfortunately I have to wait for the Chicago opening. I will be there and for more than one showing.
I really appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts and please keep us posted.

Hm, I just checked the release dates for MGP and it looks like it's not going to get a wide release at all... sigh. I think Swannie touched on this earlier.... the people in the middle of the country who may actually understand a person like Sam best will never get to see this movie. In my area it will only be shown at a small art house theater a few weeks from now. Nobody other than movie connoisseurs even go to that theater. We have so many born-again Christian churches in this area as well as bikers and "rednecks" but they won't have a chance to see the movie....

The weekend estimates are in.... a bit better but not great www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/Let's hope word of mouth will do it's job. But the numbers have gotten better Sat and Sun in comparison to Fri so that is a good sign. Plus this is still an estimate, I hope it'll be corrected UP. I think the big story is that Lionsking 3D is beating Moneyball, Abduction and Killer Elite. This is a bad weekend for Pitt, Statham and Lautner.... probably more so than Gerry. Dolphin Tale is the big winner, wow, that did really well.

latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2011/09/box-office-machine-gun-preacher.html'Machine Gun Preacher' has decent first round in limited release A gun-wielding Christian missionary packed some heat at the box office this weekend as "Machine Gun Preacher" got off to a respectable start in limited release. The film -- based on the real-life story of thug-turned-preacher Sam Childers, who traveled to Sudan to help children affected by the war there -- opened in four theaters and collected $44,000, according to an estimate from distributor Relativity Media. The gives the movie, which played in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, a good per-theater average of $11,000. The picture's U.S. distribution rights were sold by Lionsgate to Relativity in July. At that time a Lionsgate executive told the Times that the company's film slate was too packed for "Machine Gun Preacher" to get the "attention it needed." The film, which had a budget of about $30 million, is still being released internationally by Lionsgate. The movie, directed by Marc Forster and starring Gerard Butler, appealed to a slightly more female audience this weekend. A largely older crowd appears to be most interested in seeing the movie, as 82% of the audience this weekend was age 25 or older. Because of the picture's strong religious themes, Relativity is marketing it to a faith-based audience. Some pastors are referring to the movie in their sermons, and the film has been screened for various church groups. It remains to be seen whether that segment of the audience will turn up to see the film in large numbers next weekend, when the R-rated movie will expand to 15 markets including Boston, Chicago and Houston.

Okay, this is so fun to see an ad for MGP in my Sunday paper. Makes me believe it's really happening next weekend. So excited. Parade Mag inside Sunday paper had "Parade Picks" for movies and says: MGP Gerard Butler is a revelatioin as a real-life Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing convict who found God and devoted himself to helping refugee children in East Africa. As the title indicates, Childers doesn't hold back from using force when necessary. Marc Foster (MB) directed this powerful, inspirational drama.

Hi everyone! I've been by this site often, first because I'm in the industry and it's my job, but then I realized you guys are really supportive of Gerard's work. It seems that you are becoming alarmed at the numbers for MGP's release and have compared it to Jane Eyre's opening, but it is comparing apples and oranges. Although it made a fair amount of money to start, JE only made less than $12 million worldwide. Those who were going to see it saw it when it first came out, then that was it. It found its' built-in audience and that was satisfactory for them. You may have discussed this already, but you need to understand that these "critics" are part of an over-arching attempt to get rid of Gerard. He has lost the current powers-that-be A LOT of money over the last 2 1/2 years because he has refused to be the muscle head they wanted him to be and his masculinity is an unbelievable threat to them. But, most importantly, he refused to make them billions by dating Jennifer Aniston. That refusal has cost them more than just money, believe me. MGP and Coriolanus are not about making tons of money; they are about restoring Gerard's reputation as a fine actor. The people behind MGP are not idiots and knew going in that this would happen. If they didn't have a path to the Oscars, they would not have stuck their necks out and announced that they were going for it. What your members could do to help is go to sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb and post your comments as you see the film. Also, go to some of the reviewer's comment areas and respond. You are not powerless, but complaining here doesn't really help Gerard. More than nine people have seen the movie, so there should be more reviews at RT. Stop pouting and go do something! Looking at how viewers rate Gerry's movies versus the critics I really do start believing that there is a conspiracy against Gerry. Just look at LAC viewers Vs critics movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810029276/infoIt starts happening for MGP already: movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810165645/infoTo a lesser degree TUT: movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810021980/infoI mean if critics pan one of his.... well... not so great movies.... like The Bounty Hunter... that's fine... but he definitely didn't deserve the same treatment for LAC or MGP...

Thanks, GA, for the Yahoo website for movies!! That is really interesting to read and I will check it often, as I do RT and Box Office Mojo! I don't know why I do, however, because I just get angry when I read their reviews!! At least with that website, we can read the audience reviews and feel better, though! I definitely agree that there is some sort of conspiracy against GB......The critics must get bonus checks for writing negative reviews on him!! Don't forget POTO and how they dogged it, too! That was such a beautiful movie!!! Kneum

I am proud of Gerard in that he does stand up for his rights and beliefs! We, his devoted fans, will always stand by him and support him 100%!! After all, when it's all said and done, WE are the ones who bring in the money! Thanks, also, for your suggestions!! IF the movie ever comes to our area, we will certainly express our opinions to the different sites and, also, respond to the critics!! Hope you will visit our site often!! Kneum

www.suntimes.com/entertainment/movies/7870257-421/gerard-butlers-brogue-bugged-actual-preacher-sam-childers.htmlGerard Butler’s brogue bugged actual ‘Preacher’ Sam Childers When Sam Childers met the actor who would play him in “Machine Gun Preacher,” he was thrown by Gerard Butler’s strong Scottish accent. “I thought, ‘How is this guy going to sound like me, like a guy from Western Pennsylvania?’ ” Childers recalled. “But he did it. Not once in the movie did I ever hear that accent of his.” And there was something else Childers liked about how Butler played him. “It was his passion. He really captured what was going on in my heart at the time.” In one scene, Butler is attempting to get money for the orphanage at a bank, and “he nailed it,” Childers said. “Watching that scene in the movie — and that was true for most of the scenes — was like completely reliving my life a second time. … “Kind of eerie, but very satisfying, because that’s why the film was made. Hopefully, it will inspire a lot of people and make them aware not only of what happened in the Sudan, but what continues to happen, not only there, but all over the world.”
