trap.it/DndHu9Gerard Butler masters dangerous surf It's been a toner, tanner and leaner Gerard Butler doing promotion rounds for his new film, "Machine Gun Preacher," that opens Friday. The 6-foot-2 Scotsman's new physique as well as his sun-kissed long locks can be attributed to his preparation for his next movie, a surfing biopic tentatively titled Mavericks - named for the infamous break in Northern California that has challenged many a daredevil -- directed by Curtis Hanson ("8 Mile," "L.A. Confidential"). "It's about a kid, Jay Moriarty (played by newcomer Jonny Weston), who became a great big wave surfer," Butler said during his recent visit to the Toronto film festival. "I play Frosty Hesson, who's now teaching me how to surf. He was Jay's hero and his mentor. He didn't want him to surf Mavericks, because it was such a dangerous surf break and he was only 15. But he took this kid under his wing and almost became like a father to Jay, basically pushing him to be this incredible big wave surfer." Butler has been getting into shape for a while, not only doing cardio and yoga but hitting the beach almost daily in Malibu. Those who stroll by, including paparazzi, have been lucky enough to see the actor catch a wave or two. "Or they can see me try," he says. Butler is being a mite humble. The week before he took advantage of the fierce swells in the area -- "the biggest waves they've had in years" -- to go up against some 12-footers. "On the third day, my surfing had improved so much that I surfed out on this wave and I felt I was 50 feet in the air. I was only 7 or 8 feet. But it felt so high. Then I dropped into this wave and surfed down the line for a long time. My instructor said, 'That's surfing!'" He also impressed another spectator: John Stockwell, the director of the 2002 surfer-girl ode "Blue Crush." " He knows I am doing Mavericks. He was there, in the water, and he was yelling, 'Dude, that's Mavericks! You just did Mavericks.'" Actor Gerard Butler arrives at the premiere of Relativity's "Machine Gun Preacher" benefiting the Angles of East Africa at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on September 21, 2011 in Beverly Hills, California.

Since Gerry is the mentor here he should not be doing that much surfing, they will definitely have to have a skilled stunt double....... And more news Wanted: Surfers for paddle-out scene for Jay Moriarity movie in Santa Cruz By Wallace Baine wbaine@santacruzsentinel.com Posted: 10/03/2011 04:51:00 PM PDT SANTA CRUZ -- Surfers in Santa Cruz County generally don't need much in the way of persuasion to get into the water. But next week, the producers of an upcoming film are counting on surfers to come out to Pleasure Point in big numbers. Walden Media, which is producing a film based on the life of the late Santa Cruz surfing icon Jay Moriarity, is planning to shoot a key scene in the film Oct. 13 and 14 at Pleasure Point. It is a re-enactment of the paddle-out that took place as a memorial to Moriarity shortly after he died during a free-diving accident in the summer of 2001. The film's producers need about 1,000 extras to come out with wetsuits and surfboards to re-create the paddle-out. The scene will be shot from both the air and the ground. The producers are asking each participant to commit to eight hours on the set both days, in the interests of continuity, with a check-in time of around 6:30 a.m. No stand-up paddle boards will be allowed to be part of the shoot. Extras will not be paid, but lunch will be served and there will be several raffle prizes given away to those who participate. The yet-to-be-titled film will star Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston and will be directed by Curtis Hanson for a late 2012 release. It will tell the story of the relationship between Moriarity and his mentor Frosty Hesson, as well as Moriarity's efforts at becoming the youngest surfer to ever tackle Mavericks. Anyone interested in taking part in the paddle-out should contact the extras producer at 831management@gmail.com. Thanks Scottishdreamer: www.hitfix.com/articles/studio-boards-gerard-butler-surf-film-elisabeth-shue-abigail-spencer-join-cast?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitterFox 2000 boards Gerard Butler surfing film 'Of Men and Mavericks'; Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer sign on to co-star Fox 2000 has come aboard to co-finance and distribute "Of Men and Mavericks", a Gerard Butler drama based on a chapter in the life of accomplished surfer Jay Moriarity, who died in a tragic diving accident at the age of 22. In addition, Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer have signed on to co-star. Moriarity earned a reputation as a fearless big-wave surfer at the age of 16, when his wipeout at Mavericks, a surf spot in Half Moon Bay, California, made the cover of "Surfer" magazine. He drowned in June 2001, one day before his 23rd birthday, while diving off the Lohifushi Island resort in the Maldives, where he was visiting for a photo shoot with O'Neill, a prominent surfing brand. Butler is attached to star in the film as Frosty Hesson, a local surfer who mentored Moriarity (played here by relative newcomer Jonny Weston) as a teenager, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story. Shue will star as Moriarity's mother, while Spencer will play Hesson's wife. Curtis Hanson ("L.A. Confidential") is directing from a script by Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper. The film is scheduled to begin production in Northern California later this month.

fitperez.com/2011-10-05-gerard-butlers-surfing-flick-gets-its-ladies?from=PHheadline#.To14df4_fUAGerard Butler's Surfing Flick Gets Its Ladies Have you been wondering why Gerard Butler has had a sudden interest in surfing? The dude is out there like, all the time, bro. It turns out it's for his new surfing movie called Of Men and Mavericks, and they also just casted their leading ladies! Here's who they got, and a bit of plot: Walden Media’s Gerard Butler surfing drama Of Men and Mavericks has landed a studio — Fox 2000 — while Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer are joining the cast. Of Men and Mavericks follows a chapter in the real-life story of young Northern Californian Jay Moriarty, a world champion surfer and adventurer who made his reputation surfing Marvericks north of Half Moon Bay before dying in a diving accident at age 22. Gerard plays local surfing legend Frosty Hesson, who mentored and trained the young Moriarty, played by Jonny Weston. We'll be honest: that sounds a lot better than most surfing movies. For some reason, they don't usually do it for us! But we'll suspend that because let's be honest — Gerard is a handsome, handsome man. Ha!

"Shooting begins in Jay Moriarity film; paddle-out moved to Friday By Wallace Baine wbaine@santacruzsentinel.com Posted: 10/11/2011 04:53:42 PM PDT Updated: 10/11/2011 04:59:19 PM PDT SANTA CRUZ -- The new film about the late Santa Cruz surfer Jay Moriarity has a new name, a few new co-stars and a new plan for shooting the famous paddle-out scene. The scene to re-enact the paddle-out that took place shortly after Moriarity's 2001 death will now take place Friday. Originally, the film's producers had hoped to shoot the scene Thursday and Friday, but surf conditions and other schedule changes have revised the original plan. Extras are being asked to show up at 6:30 a.m. Friday in Pleasure Point. Walden Media's coordinator for extras Joel Domhoff stressed that though the paddle-out is scheduled for Friday, the plan is still fluid and subject to change. "I wish I could say that it's 100 percent," he said, "but it may change again." The film, directed by Curtis Hansen and starring Gerard Butler, also has a new name. After being called "Mavericks" and, briefly, "Iron Cross," the film's working title is "Of Men and Mavericks." Jonny Weston, an accomplished surfer, has been cast to play Jay Moriarity. Weston is shooting "Cherry," starring with James Franco and Dev Patel. Walden Media also announced that, among the new cast members of the film, are Elisabeth Shue -- nominated for an Oscar for her starring role in "Leaving Las Vegas" -- Abigail Spencer ("Mad Men") and Taylor Handley ("The O.C."). The primary scenes in which the public will interact with the film crew include Friday's paddle-out shoot, Advertisement and a planned scene at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, scheduled for Oct. 24 or 25. The crew spent its first day in Santa Cruz on Monday shooting surfing scenes at Steamer Lane and West Cliff Drive. Tuesday, the shoot was moved to Pleasure Point, where Moriarity grew up and lived with his young wife Kimberly before his death in June 2001 in a diving accident a day before his 23rd birthday. The film's producer and screenwriter Brandon Hooper said that he has met several locals who have come down to the film's set to talk about Moriarity. "It's amazing how present Jay is in everyone's mind," said Hooper. "I mean, I don't think I've had a conversation with someone about him without them getting emotional about what kind of guy he was." "Of Men and Mavericks" tells the story of Moriarity and his longtime friend and mentor Frosty Hesson who will be played by Butler, the popular star of "300." Hooper said that Hesson and Kim Moriarity have been on the set every day. After shooting in Santa Cruz, the production crew will move on to Half Moon Bay to shoot the footage at Mavericks." www.mercurynews.com/entertainment/ci_19090993

Just posting this article on Frosty's second wife www.scsextra.com/story.php?sid=65890Santa Cruz County Stories, Robin Janiszeufski-Hesson: 'Zeuf -- the girl in the curl"™ Ann Parker - Sentinel Correspondent Article Launched: 02/18/2008 3:00:00 AM PST Robin 'Zeuf' Janiszeufski-Hesson Born: March 12, 1959, in Anchorage, Alaska. Siblings: 'Two wonderful sisters, Sarah and Casey.' Husband: Richard 'Frosty' Hesson, her former surfing teacher. 'We're mutually supportive.' Children: 'Frosty has three great kids: Roqué, Lake and Josh.' Board surfing: Self-taught in 1990, then helped by Richard and Marissa Schmidt. Women surf mentors: 'The Sunn family, Alayna Nathe, Jane McKenzie, Rosemary Rice -- too many to name.' Prized award: 'Second place in a longboarding contest, when I was bald and nauseated from chemo -- I was just proud to get up and out!' Related sites: www.rideawave.org, www.swellcinema.com. To thousands of listeners -- both surf-dedicated and landlocked -- she's KPIG radio's 8:30 a.m. "Girl in the Curl," delivering the surf report with personal warmth every Monday through Friday. "I love everybody at KPIG," she declares. "It's one of the last bastions of real radio." She shakes her signature blond ringlets, grinning. "Boots McGee gave me the nickname. And I've been 'Zeuf' since I was 23, volunteering at the Berkeley Free Clinic." Lithe and younger-looking than 49, she relaxes in the comfortable Pleasure Point cottage "my surf shack" she shares with husband and surf-mentor, Frosty. Ocean-related art decorates the house inside and out; Sophie, an elderly black Labrador, dozes in the sun. It's an idyllic setting and Zeuf seems serenely positive. But there's much more to this sunny surfing champion than her generous smile and tousled hair. She and Frosty helped create Ride A Wave, a program aiding disabled people to experience the ocean; they also helped develop big-tired beach wheelchairs. A critical-care RN and patient advocate for 20 years, Zeuf was named 2004 Nurse of the Year by Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula: "It's awarded by your peers -- that means so much." She's also a two-time breast cancer survivor. First diagnosed in 1993, the disease took both of her breasts but not her spirit: only months after her first mastectomy she paddled 32 miles across Monterey Bay with 18 other surfers. In 1994, her friend Charlotte Lagarde created "Zeuf," an award-winning black-and-white documentary short. It features gorgeous surfing footage of Janiszeufski-Hesson, as well as the unforgettable image of Zeuf gracefully turning to reveal her radical mastectomy scar. Zeuf also introduced Lagarde to her mentor and fellow breast cancer survivor, the legendary Hawaiian surfer Rell Sunn, who became the subject of the filmmaker's much-acclaimed feature "Heart of the Sea" before succumbing to the disease. Last February, Zeuf discovered that her cancer had returned, now metastasized to her bones. Doctors give her a prognosis of two to five years. "But I haven't really bought into that," she comments. "I've made it my business not to believe in grave prognoses." "On good days I can get into the water, although there's usually pain in my hip and chest," she says. "Luckily I was really healthy before, now I'm frustrated at how exhausted I get." Neighbors carrying surfboards call to Zeuf. A friend brings a bouquet. "I've had so much support through the surfing community," she smiles. "And I've met the most amazing women through surfing." "Life is a terminal condition for us all. It shouldn't take a life-threatening illness to wake us up, to remind us of the preciousness we have." Photos

According to this article, she and Frosty were married in 2000, but they were probably together prior to that time. He was apparently one of her surfing teachers. Whether the biopic will just fuzzy that all up who knows. Interestingly enough she is no stranger to films either. Last article mentioned a documentary on her called Zeuf and this mentions yet another documentary she was in. www.goodtimessantacruz.com/good-times-cover-stories/694-the-film-issue-08.htmlSanta Cruzan Robin Janiszeufski Hesson of the documentary Surfin’ Thru, leads the way in our annual film issue, in which we salute the season’s most memorable celluloid players. Editor's note: GT's annual film issue is loaded with plenty of cinematic fodder to keep you busy for quite some time. Here, we spotlight some of the locals that have been making a difference in the film world at home, beginning with ... Robin Janiszeufski Hesson, The Rising Star. (Read more film stories here.) We don’t come into the world with a movie script that tells us what we’re supposed to do or how we’re supposed to act. But, the more conscious we become, the deeper we look within ourselves for answers, we do realize we have the extreme pleasure of casting anybody we want to be the main star in the moving picture known as our life. We can take on the lead role, but sometimes, try as we might, our “co-stars” still want to steal the show. Robin Janiszeufski Hesson knows this all too well. For 15 years, the Santa Cruzan has had to keep a curious neighbor known as cancer from robbing her of the spotlight—not once, not twice, but three times. But at 49, even though her cancer has moved into stage 4, Janiszeufski Hesson, more fondly known as Zeuf, is nowhere close to the final credits. For starters, she’s currently one part of a winning trifecta found in the heartwarming 24-minute documentary Surfin’ Thru, which premieres in the Santa Cruz Film Festival this week. Directed by actress-filmmaker Chloe Webb (Sid and Nancy, Tales of the City), the film chronicles the unique bond three female surfers with stage 4 cancer share with each other and the ocean. Webb, who was inspired to make the film when her friend, xxxx, was diagnosed with cancer, decided to include Zeuf in the doc after meeting the local at a 2002 Ride-A-Wave event. The end result on screen is a life-affirming, often humorous tale about three unconventional women whose seemingly insurmountable health problems only fuel them to further master the art of living. Lean and athletic, Zeuf has been an avid surfer in the area for 18 years. She says surfing has been one her strongest tools in keeping the cancer at bay. “What I love the most about surfing is the unadulterated joy I get from just being in the ocean,” she says. “It has made a rough day smooth, a good day fantastic, and sometimes just one wave, well-surfed, takes my mind to the Zen place needed with a great smile to accompany. “Having cancer, I know well how difficult it is to have the desire to stay strong. Surfing is that for me. It feeds my desire when I feel like I have nothing left.” The first wave of cancer hit Zeuf in 1993. After she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she had a mastectomy but didn’t have to undergo chemotherapy. Time passed. She had a good position as a nurse at Community Hospital in Monterey and found great support within the Santa Cruz community. Then, in 2000, the cancer had moved into the lymph nodes of her other breast. Another mastectomy followed and this time, chemotherapy entered the picture. Then came another surgery, this time to remove her ovaries because the tumor that was discovered was estrogen-receptive. The less estrogen she had, the less tumor growth would occur. cover_RisingStarBut that second bout with cancer came at pivotal interval in 2000—she had been married to her husband just three months. “We were just starting a new life together, and our new life began with me being bald, sick and a surgical mess,” Zeuf recalls. “But he is an amazing individual. We talked about it before we got married and I was like, ‘If you want to back out, I have no issue with this because this may get way worse before it gets better.’” Curiously, Zeuf’s husband, Richard “Frosty” Hesson, is one-time surfer of Mavericks. The couple resides in Pleasure Point with several of Hesson’s children. Then, last year, the cancer returned. Zeuf had been doing a great deal of surfing at the time. She thought she had pulled a muscle in her chest but when she had it checked out it, she discovered she had “a big fat tumor” on her sternum. That’s not the only place the doctors found something. There was also a tumor in the ball and socket joint of her hip. She underwent six months of radiation—not to shrink the tumor, she says, but to kill the cancer, because the tumor was in the bone. “I was shocked. I felt like I had escaped a Stage 4 tumor—twice,” she says. “But I never had this ‘How can this be happening to me?’ moment. It was more like, “OK, the cancer is visiting again what do I need to do? And it was actually through Bikram yoga and surfing that I discovered it. It would have been a lot longer had I not been a physically active person.” The prognosis from the doctors: three to five years. At Currently, everything is in a holding pattern. There is no new tumor growth. She receives monthly infusions that are hard-core bone strengthening medications, which keep the cancer spreading to the bones. In between, Zeuf’s attention, much like the documentary Surfin Thru illuminates, is all about living even more consciously. To that end, a recent trip to South America proved enlightening. There, she met with a shaman whose age-old medicinal treatments made her realize there are, indeed, “other avenues” to living with an illness. “I leave no stone unturned, she says. “And I hope this doesn’t sound totally cliché, but now I take absolutely nothing for granted. Having a chronic, and in this case, terminal, illness, heightens your awareness of your ‘living.’ Dying is something we all know that we are going to do, so it is in our living that we make that day, a happy one. “And I don’t mean that morbidly,” she adds. “This has made me tremendously grateful and you get a real clarity about what you want to do and what you want be about, but you also have to go into some sort of denial and then acceptance … I am planning to move through. And who knows how long I can keep this at bay, but I am planning on doing this for a long time. That is my hope and that is my will. You do some breathing … and then you keep on going

Pleasure Point is blocked off because of a movie shoot on Wednesday. (Oct. 12, 2011) Surfers Not Stoked On Movie Shoot At Pleasure Point By Amy Larson, KSBW.com POSTED: 12:20 pm PDT October 12, 2011 UPDATED: 2:26 pm PDT October 12, 2011 CAPITOLA, Calif. -- Surfers who were ready to shred some of Santa Cruz's gnarliest waves ran into a major bummer this morning: Hollywood had come to town. Every day, hundreds of surfers hit up Pleasure Point in Capitola and battle each other for the biggest walls of water. Pleasure Point rivals Steamers Lane, which is farther north in Santa Cruz, for hosting the hottest break. Stretching along East Cliff Drive, surf spots - O'Neill's (where Jack O'Neill's house is), Sewer, First Peak, Second Peak, 38th Avenue, Drain Pipe, The Hook, Shark's, Privates and Trees - all have perfect breaks on most days. On Wednesday, the surf was pumping as a strong swell generated eight-foot waves. But yellow tape and security guards blocked surfers off. A film crew had taken over Pleasure Point starting on Tuesday and turned it into a movie set. Ironically, the movie is about them. The film crew is shooting a movie on the life of infamous surfer Jay Moriarity, who grew up in Santa Cruz, trained at Pleasure Point and began surfing Mavericks in Half Moon Bay at age 16. After going through a few name changes, the movie is currently titled "Of Men and Mavericks." The movie is being directed by Curtis Hanson and stars Gerard Butler. Surfer Jonny Weston was cast to play Moriarity. Movie producers said they will remain at Pleasure Point for the rest of this week. On Friday, the crew will need the same surfers they irked today. Hundreds of extras are needed to re-enact a paddle-out that happened in 2001, when Santa Cruz's surfers honored Moriarity soon after he died. Moriarity died when he was just 23 during a free-diving accident in the Indian Ocean near the Maldives. www.ksbw.com/news/29465096/detail.html
